SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two women were arrested and nine people were detained Friday morning following a break-in at a nearby liquor store, police said.Dispatchers received a call shortly before 3:30 a.m. from a person who reported seeing video of people breaking into the Valley Liquor store in the 1200 block of Hotel Circle, San Diego police Officer Scott Lockwood said.Officers responded to the scene and learned the suspects were possibly in a room at a nearby hotel, Lockwood said.They went to contact the suspects at the hotel room and ended up detaining 11 people for questioning.One male detained became unruly with officers and was placed into the back of an SDPD vehicle, where he continued to act out.Two women were eventually arrested on suspicion of burglary, but their names and ages were not available, Lockwood said. 835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 63-year-old man was shot several times during an argument in San Diego’s Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood Friday afternoon.Police say the shooting happened on the 7900 block of Gribble Street just before 4 p.m.According to police, the victim and suspect got into an argument when the 63-year-old was shot three times. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 7.7% in October, a drop of 1.2% from September, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 21,500 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,386,600 to 1,408,100 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,600 to 9,500.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 3%. The region lost 106,500 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 10.8% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 6.6% from 7.7%.Professional and business services led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 5,200. The majority of job gains were centered in professional, scientific and technical services -- up 3,400 -- while 1,000 jobs were posted in scientific, research and developmental services.Government jobs grew by 4,300, with 2,700 in local and 2,500 in state government gains. The federal government lost 900 jobs locally.Six other industries posted month-over-month job gains: Construction gained 4,100; educational and health services 3,700; leisure and hospitality 3,200; trade, transportation and utilities 900; financial activities 600; and information 100.Mining and logging employment levels remained unchanged.The two industries to lose jobs in October were other services -- down 400 -- and manufacturing -- down 200.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 47,900 jobs lost since last October -- 35,200 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 17,100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 13,800; other services 10,500; educational and health services 10,000; and manufacturing 6,500; financial activities 3,800; and information 3,400.Professional and business services gained 4,300 new jobs and construction grew payrolls by 2,200 year-over-year. 2294

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A day after California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. The state's previous high for deaths was set Saturday with 225.On Tuesday, Newsom ordered 5,000 body bags during a surge in deaths over the past week, averaging over 160 per day."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said Tuesday. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom also said that 60 refrigerated storage units are ready to be mobilized across California should hospitals become overwhelmed with virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. "That should be sobering. I don't want ... to scare folks, but this is a deadly disease. And we need to be mindful of where we are in this current journey together to the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) -- A San Diego County deputy facing charges that he groped 13 women was arrested again Thursday on five new charges, including forcible oral copulation.Richard Fischer, 32, is being held on million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning in a Vista courtroom.Fischer faces more than 10 years if convicted on the new charges, according to the District Attorney. Fischer is already facing 14 years and eight months behind bars if convicted on previously filed charges.RELATED: San Diego deputy accused by multiple women of sexual assault speaks publiclyIn July, Fischer, accompanied by his attorney, spoke out for the first time about the accusations."These charges are simply untrue. I vigorously deny them," he said, with his wife and his new attorney, Manny Medrano, by his side.
