Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey requested the help of Minnesota's National Guard Wednesday after false rumors of an officer-involved shooting in the city prompted rioting and looting.On Wednesday evening, Frey imposed a city-wide curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and asked for members of the National Guard in help patrolling his city's streets. Tim Waltz declared a state of emergency and activated 150 State Patrol troopers, according to the Star-Tribune.The chain of events that led to looting and rioting began when police spotted a homicide suspect near Nicollet Mall. As police closed in on the suspect, he pulled out a gun and shot himself.The man who died has not yet been identified.The Minneapolis Police released surveillance video from the incident within 90 minutes of the shooting. Video does not show officers firing weapons but shows them appearing on the scene seconds after the self-inflicted gunshot wound.However, the incident sparked rumors online that officers had shot and killed the man. Hours later, a group of protesters gathered at Nicollet Mall to call for justice.Though some in the crowd attempted to inform the others that police were not involved in the shooting, the protests nonetheless devolved into looting. A Nordstrom Rack and a Target in the area were among the stores hit."This is a tragic incident for all involved," said Frey. "What the city needs now is healing, not more property destruction."Minneapolis saw several nights of violent protests in late May and early June, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the city's police officers. More than one thousand businesses in Minneapolis were damaged during the protests over the death of George Floyd. It’s been two months since the damage was done and for many of the businesses, little has changed.“It’s terrible, you know to sit and look at this,” said Flora Westbrooks as she looked at what is left of her business in north Minneapolis.After 35 years of owning Flora’s Hair Design, the business is no more. It was set on fire during the protests at the end of May and into June, specifically, just a day before she was set to reopen after coronavirus state-mandated closures.“I’m already losing money and don’t have any money, then to see my salon go up in flames like that,” said Westbrooks, “it was devastating, the most devastating thing I had to witness.”Since the fire burned the hair salon and another building that she owned next to it, she has been struggling to raise the 0,000 needed to rebuild. Unfortunately, many business owners in Minneapolis are dealing with a similar struggle.“Everything up here, it is just gone. It’s just forgotten. We are forgotten and if I go down farther, there is nothing open,” said Westbrooks.Taking a walk through north Minneapolis, especially along West Broadway Avenue, it is easy to see that if a business is not in rubble, it is still boarded up and closed.For the businesses that have been able to reopen, many attribute their ability to do so to limited damage from the protest or help from their community and beyond.“There’s been an enormous amount of help,” said Tito Wilson. “We saw a lot of people coming in from outside the community and maybe some people from within the community, they came in sweeping up glass and sweeping up other debris.”Wilson is the owner of a barbershop in north Minneapolis. His business and other businesses on his street were able to reopen quickly after volunteers started a clean-up effort.“There are some nonprofits and for profits and volunteers who are individually helping, providing technical support to help businesses rethink themselves, to help them fill out loan applications, to figure out if they qualify for things,” said Kenya McKnight-Ahad.McKnight-Ahad is the founder of Minneapolis’ Black Woman’s Health Alliance and has helped more than 40 businesses with about ,000 in grant money to rebuild and reopen. Her organization is one of many in the area trying to help. The West Broadway Business and Area Coalition is another. It has raised more than million for businesses damaged and is set to soon allocate that money to the businesses still in need.Beyond the city though, individual businesses around the country have donated millions to the GoFundMe pages of individual businesses. Some businesses have received a few hundred dollars, while others have received several hundred thousand dollars in donations. Even Flora’s Hair Design, has gotten more than 0,000 in donations on her GoFundMe page.The one entity that has not showed up for the businesses damaged during the protests has been the federal government. Businesses in need are calling for a disaster recovery-like consideration from the government.“You help Wall Street, you bail them out, but people like us, we just need a little fraction of the money that you give,” said Westbrooks. “I would beg and ask our government, do something.”To the business owners here, letting their businesses struggle and die will only further systemic issues in their communities of color. More than 30 states are reporting increases in opioid related overdoses and those from other drugs during the pandemic, particularly involving fentanyl, according to the American Medical Association.The government has taken steps to curb deaths during the pandemic by allowing for more flexibility in prescribing medications for opioid use disorder and lifting other restrictions on pain medications.Meanwhile, the National Safety Council is calling on businesses to get ready for an increase in substance misuse in the workplace.“Employers not only have a responsibility, they have a call to arms here to make sure as they bring employees back to work, that they are directly addressing their mental health and providing them the resources that they need to be able to navigate,” said Lorraine Martin, President of the National Safety Council. “It’s just as important as the PPE and sanitization for hygiene that we will all need to have when we come back to work.”Martin recognizes mental health and substance misuse are often interconnected.Now, with the additional stress and unrest related to George Floyd’s death on top of COVID-19, people may be self-medicating even more.The National Safety Council put out resources and tools to help businesses help struggling employees, but they believe the most important thing leaders can do is talk about it.“The most mature companies are addressing this head on,” said Martin. “We know that substance misuse is a disease, not a decision, and if you can come at it with that attitude and make sure you create that safe space for your employees, that can make all the difference.”Not addressing substance misuse is a serious threat to worker safety and costs a lot of money in terms of productivity, absenteeism and workers compensation claims.On the other hand, employees that work through these issues with their employer often come out on the other side more loyal and productive. 1937

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Individuals convicted of a felony can't vote while incarcerated, on parole, or on probation in the State of Tennessee, and Terrancé Akins was one of those people — until this week.Akins will get to vote for the first time after serving 17 years in prison.When he was 17-years-old, Akins went to prison for especially aggravated robbery."I lost my family, I lost my freedom, and then I lost my right to vote," Akins said.He has started a non-profit called 'Blessed Incorporated' where he helps inner city kids stay out of trouble. It took four years, but now that he is on a steady path, he's excited to be able to vote for the first time. "It feels great. It feels wonderful," he said.In Tennessee, voting rights are restored when ex-felons complete their supervised release. Akins hopes his example will help encourage others to re-register to vote. "They give up on themselves, they give up on their lives, they figure that they can never really amount to anything, but that's not true. You have to believe in yourself and you have to believe that you matter and that your vote matter, and that's one thing that I did, I took the initiative to not just do this for me, but to do it for those that are coming behind me," said Akins.The voter registration deadline is on Tuesday, you can fill out a form online or sign up in person.Akins is now renting an apartment in Montgomery County. Early voting there starts Oct. 17 and runs through Nov. 1. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6. 1575

Multiple reports of illnesses have prompted a Chipotle location near Columbus, Ohio to close on Monday, both Reuters and the Columbus Dispatch reported. The Columbus Dispatch reported that a dozen customers claimed to have gotten sick after eating at the location over the weekend. The Dispatch reported that the location was last inspected on Thursday by the health department, and had two critical violations - one was for beans that were not held at a high enough temperature, and the other was for cut lettuce that was not properly cooled after preparation. The Dispatch said that these violations were corrected on the same day. “We acted quickly and closed this single restaurant out of an abundance of caution and we are working with the local health officials to reopen this restaurant as soon as possible,” a Chipotle spokeswoman said in a statement to Reuters.The Dispatch reported this location should reopen on Tuesday. In 2015, hundreds of customers were sickened across the country after eating at Chipotle.
