There are growing safety concerns about Boeing's best-selling plane, following a second crash involving the plane in less than five months. On Sunday, 157 people died, including 8 Americans, after a Boeing 737 MAX 8 crashed in Ethiopia. In October, 189 died when the same kind of plane crashed into the sea off Indonesia. Investigators are now looking into the similarities. Both jets were Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and both flights crashed shortly after take-off. Pilots on both flights and tried returning to the airport prior to crashing. “Absolutely there are concerns, and the alarms should be and are going off all throughout the aviation industry,” says Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The crashes remain under investigation, and it's not known if any of the same factors contributed to either crash. But out of caution, China and Indonesia have grounded the planes. Some foreign airlines have also suspended the use of the planes. In the U.S., American and Southwest airlines both use the 737 Max 8 planes but are still flying them. “For as long as the airlines continue flying the planes, it's because they feel it's safe,” says aviation expert Seth Kaplan. “There's so much risk here. Not just for safety, but for their businesses.” Today, Boeing issued a statement saying, in part, "… based on the information available, we do not have any basis to issue new guidance to operators." Still, nervous fliers in the U.S. are sharing their concerns on social media about their fears of flying on the plane. “You cannot blame people for being concerned,” Kaplan says. “On the other hand, you do have a U.S. airline industry that's as safe as it's ever been.”Investigators recovered the black box and data recorders in the latest crash and hope to get early clues into what may have happened. 1854

A man walked into a California police department Monday and told officers he had killed four people, police say.One of the bodies was in the car the suspect drove to the Mt. Shasta Police Department. His three other victims were in his apartment more than 200 miles away, Roseville Police Department Captain Josh Simon said in a Monday news conference.Roseville officers learned of the man's confession around noon, when they received a call from Mt. Shasta police, who detained the suspect after he came in.Roseville is about 20 miles from Sacramento and about 212 miles from Mt. Shasta.This is an ongoing investigation in coordination with the Mt. Shasta police department, Simon said, adding police don't believe the quadruple homicide was a random act. The suspects and the victim likely knew each other, police said.Police did not identify the suspect or the victims."The sole suspect involved in this incident is in custody and we do not believe there is any ongoing threat to our community," he said.The killings, he said, will likely take a toll on the Roseville community."This can really have an effect on all our first responders and people who may or may not know these victims. The Phoenix Police Department released video Wednesday of a frightening moment involving a red-light runner and a family crossing the street with a stroller.Police say the incident happened near 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road on October 14, around 10 p.m. Watch video of the incident in the player above.The family says Ulysses Betancourt, his wife Gabrielle and 1-year-old son Damian were on the way to the grocery store after riding the bus. Police say the driver who ran the red-light, 28-year-old Ernesto Otanez Oveso, was driving under the influence at the time. The driver with the right-of-way in the crash was injured, but the injuries were not life-threatening.After the crash, police say Oveso fled the scene along with a female passenger. Oveso allegedly told a witness that was following him to get away, and stabbed the car door of the witness. "He could've taken people's family members away, innocent people. Why would you do such a thing?" said Ulysses's sister, Abby Betancourt. "I'm so glad I'm going to see my brother. I love him and my sister-in-law." Oveso has been arrested and faces charges for DUI, aggravated assault and prohibited possession after a gun was found in his Jeep. The female passenger has not been located. 1263

A Fordham University student was critically injured Sunday after falling from a clock tower, according to a statement from the New York university.The student was climbing the tower about 3 a.m. Sunday when the fall occurred. The student, a senior, was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, and the student's family was notified.According to the university, the student climbed the clock tower with some friends. The tower is off limits to students and university officials are investigating how the students gained access to the tower.The tower is the central part of Keating Hall on the university's Rose Hill campus in the Bronx. Built in the 1930s, the building's Gothic architecture has featured in several movies, including scenes in "The Exorcist" and "A Beautiful Mind."
