SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some long-time roller derby kids are upset after Skateworld management announced their Youth Roller Derby program was cut. Many of these kids were instrumental in the "Save Skateworld" campaign in April. When Skateworld was on the verge of being turned into a big box store, they were there. "We got out of school the day of the City Council meeting," mother, Meadow Beidler said. Armed with their skates and signs, dozens of roller derby kids convinced San Diego City Council to vote to save Skateworld on April 8, 2019. "We really thank the kids for coming out and making their signs," Skateworld general manager, Brett Stang said. His father Gary Stang started the rink in 1975. It has been a Linda Vista institution ever since. Earlier this year, when a developer shared plans to turn Skateworld into a big box store, the derby kids rallied and protested for days.Little did the kids know, that the home they just helped save, would essentially kick them out. Beidler is a proud "Derby Mom" of three fierce girls: "Cheshire Splat," "Hot Sauce," and "Zoom Zoom Kaboom." But now, she doesn't know if she will keep that title. "We don't know if we are going to be able to continue with derby," Beidler said. Days after the city council vote to save their rink, Beidler says her girls were suddenly told that their Youth Derby program would be cut. Management explained it was due to administrative reasons. "The way it went down it was just heartbreaking," Beidler said. The kids were told to join another club instead."We haven't been able to give that derby team the attention it kind of deserves," Brett Stang said. "They've been bumped for private events and other slots, so there is another team out there, 'Derby United,' who offered to take our program under their wing."But Beidler says the problem is that Derby United's new facility in La Mesa has not started construction. She also says Skateworld's prices cannot be beaten. "If we were to continue that and do derby at this new location that hasn't been built yet, then it would cost my family an additional 0 a month," Beidler said. Her girls are now so distraught, they cannot even speak. After all they did for Skateworld, they feel unappreciated. "Having our kids getting excited and politically motivated and going on camera and speaking from the heart how it is family," Beidler said. "They feel very betrayed."Skateworld's management told 10News, although they are closed on Mondays, the kids could have Monday practices if parents and coaches work on an agreement. But hosting home games on the weekends would be tough, considering their free skate schedule. 2663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several US Navy Sailors put on their uniforms on their days off to help deliver meals to San Diego-area military veterans. Meals on Wheels President Debbie Case said they deliver 500,000 meals every year and about 42 percent of those meals go to veterans.“To see the active duty and the respect that they have for these veterans is incredible,” said Case.Meals on Wheels makes 1,400 deliveries every day. That means more than 500 are for veterans.Case added they also started delivering to disabled veterans no matter how old they are or when they ended their service. 610

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is defending its coronavirus-related disciplinary protocols after angry parents criticized them. The family of a student tells ABC 10News that she may be suspended for an entire semester for not reporting her COVID-19 test result fast enough.Marc Peterson says that his daughter is a sophomore. He asked that ABC 10News not show her face or use her name out of fear of retribution. He says that she lives in a single room in the dorms. When she fell ill, he says that she visited the County’s testing site on-campus, which is where she reportedly tested positive. Peterson says that she waited four days to notify the housing authority, instead of doing it immediately.“She thought [that] she didn't have to because the test was done on-campus. She thought it was being reported to the school,” he told ABC 10News on Monday and added, “The documentation that she had signed for housing said that she should report results or contact with other students ‘immediately' and ‘immediately' is not defined in any of the paperwork.”He says that she self-quarantined but still got in trouble. Peterson shared a letter that he says the school sent her which outlined options of taking an academic suspension for the spring semester or taking an academic suspension for this current semester. “It means that all the work that you've done all this semester will be wiped out. You're giving up this entire semester,” he explained.He says that he’s part of a Facebook group where dozens of other SDSU parents are posting about similar disciplinary actions for, what he calls, minor offenses during a rapidly changing pandemic. “It seems like the school is very overhandedly punishing students in this environment,” he added.Peterson says that his daughter plans to fight the possibility of suspension with the school.SDSU sent the following information to ABC 10News."We cannot provide specific information relating to specific cases or students’ academic records due to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scientists at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute are working to replenish the California Halibut population.In October, they released 2,300 juvenile halibut into Mission Bay. Those fish were bred, born and raised at the institute. They hope it's just the start of a robust replenishment program."The species is pretty heavily depleted and for that reason, they're a good candidate to help boost the species," says Mark Drawbridge, the Institute's Director of the Sustainable Seafood Program.Recent surveys show the California Halibut is down to 14 percent of what its population should be. The most severe drop has come in Southern California.Hubbs hopes it can replicate the success it had with the White Seabass. It has released nearly 2.5 million seabass into the wild in the last 35 years."A lot of the process is transferable from one species to another," says Drawbridge.The Dick Laub Fisheries Replenishment Program oversees every step of the process, from breeding to release. Drawbridge says they've seen success in every phase so far."Our survival rates from egg to juvenile stage are typically 20 percent or higher," he says. "Compare that to the wild, where it would be a fraction of a percent. That's more than adequate to produce tens of thousands of fish."The next step is seeing how the halibut survive in the wild. The Institute put stainless steel trackers in each fish and will monitor them over the next few years.The program is funded through private donations, many of which come from fisherman who need a healthy halibut population to make a living. 1602
