SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Tunnel Task Force have released images showing what they say is a sophisticated drug smuggling tunnel that leads from Tijuana to a warehouse in Otay Mesa.Federal agents made the discovery Thursday, March 19, as part of an investigation into a transnational crime ring suspected of smuggling narcotics into the U.S. via a cross-border tunnel. The U.S. exit point was discovered subsequent to the execution of the warrant, the task force said.Agencies from the U.S. and Mexico located a 2,000-foot underground from a warehouse in Tijuana, Mexico to a warehouse in the Otay Mesa area of San Diego, according to the task force. The tunnel has an average depth of 31 feet and is three-feet wide through most of the passageway, according to authorities. Authorities estimate the tunnel to have been in existence for several months.The task force described it as having advanced construction including reinforced walls, ventilation, lighting, and an underground rail system. Authorities seized an estimated .6 million in mixed drugs including 1,300 pounds of cocaine, 86 pounds of methamphetamine, 17 pounds of heroin, 3,000 pounds of marijuana and more than two pounds of fentanyl.According to the task force, the seizure is the first time "in San Diego’s history where five different types of drugs were found inside a tunnel."The tunnel has an average depth of 31 feet and is three-feet wide through most of the passageway.“I’m proud of the excellent work performed by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents, as well as U.S. Border Patrol and Drug Enforcement Administration agents as integrated partners of the San Diego Tunnel Task Force. Morant, Acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI San Diego. “Several months ago, agents on the San Diego Tunnel Task Force announced the seizure of the longest cross-border tunnel and today we announce the discovery of another sophisticated tunnel with large quantities of drugs seized from within,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County Office of Education is bringing solutions to families without internet access to start the school year.The “digital divide” was already in place before the pandemic. With an increased reliance on distance learning and working from home, it’s only gotten worse.Before coronavirus, 1 in 5 students in San Diego County were under-connected or not connected at all.Chief Technology Officer, Terry Loftus, with the County Office of Education is working to help fix that.“If the parent had an Android phone, that qualifies as connectivity, but it’s not broadband and it doesn’t meet the needs of distance learning,” said Loftus.The COE is stepping up to the challenge of bridging the digital divide that plagued about 100,000 families.“Approximately 36,000 of those were South and East county,” said Loftus. “Or our districts that have people on the Free and Reduced Meal Program and haven’t had access in the past.”Many families can’t afford cable or wireless connections, or were forced to cut the cord after losing their jobs.Others live in more rural areas where that connection isn’t possible.So, they’re adding satellite solutions and distributing hotspot devices.“The 5,000 devices that are going out in the next week or two in that initial order, zero are being paid for by families,” said Loftus.There are also options for undocumented families and those who don’t want to share personal information to secure a connection.“To get that service without having to give details about their financial background, immigration status,” said Loftus.Most of the new connections are coming at no cost to parents or students thanks in-part to money from the CARES Act.The COE is also working with legislators on Senate Bill 1130 that would build new infrastructure in communities that need it.They’re in the process of surveying families to see who still needs connectivity as their programs are rolling out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says it paid out nearly million in overtime throughout the course of protests and riots in the county.According to the department, ,862,798 was paid out from May 28 through June 4, 2020.The department said more than 24,000 hours were worked throughout the protests.The figure includes overtime for sworn deputies and support staff. They added that, throughout the protests and riots, no one had time off, and that all vacation time was canceled during the unrest.The news comes after rioters set fire to several buildings and vehicles in La Mesa in late May.Several stores were also looted, including Walmart, Target, Vons, and other stores and shopping centers. 737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Padres took a dozen teens undergoing cancer treatment to Spring Training this week.After spending months in and out of Rady Children’s Hospital, the teens say they were excited to get to experience what it feels like to be a normal kid again. “I have osteosarcoma, it's a bone cancer, it was in my leg, and I recently got it is surgically removed,” says patient Nicholas Herrmann. But today, lab tests and screenings are the last things on his mind. “It sounds so fun. For three days, they will get to meet players, attend batting practice and a game versus the Cincinnati Reds. This is the first year for the program. Parents say this trip is an excellent way for the teens to gain independence and form friendships with others. “It's so hard for them. My son is not in school, a lot of other kids aren’t in school either, so they’re not having that social interaction all the time,” says Nichole Elliott- Herrmann. “For us just to see them have fun and have a smile on their face, and not having to go into the hospital is amazing.”Parents will be staying behind for this trip.
