Tyson Hellmich recently became the new owner of a "smart house" in a "smart community."“The technology, obviously, was a huge part of our decision. Every house gets one-gig internet, and that’s nothing we’ve ever experienced before,” Hellmich said. From high-speed internet to automated coffee makers, smart homes are popping up throughout the country. And just how smart the home can be depends on how much you want to spend.“The smart home features are highly dependent on your own investment,” Hellmich said. There’s also technology outside of the home that’s part of the community. Irrigation sensors can detect when grass needs to be watered, and streetlights are used to alert the community of a significant weather event or safety hazard.“They have a little LED light on top of each one of them that can change colors,” Hellmich said. The definition of a smart community depends who you ask.“A smart community is really an innovative community looking for new technologies and partnerships with folks like Arrow to solve problems in a different way,” Colorado Smart Cities Alliance Executive Director Tyler Svitak said.Using the latest technologies, Svitak says these communities can tackle problems that arise with transportation, air quality, water conservation and energy efficiency. For example, in the case of a water main break, people used to not know the main had burst until their street was flooded.“Now we can predict that before it happens by putting sensors underground, and monitoring that leakage over time to prevent that water main break from happening in the first place,” Svitak said. There aren’t a lot of metrics on the number of smart communities already in place across the nation.According to Svitak, the term was coined in 2010 and really started to explode in 2016, when the federal government gave cities million to spend on smart technology.“It’d be hard pressed to find a major city or a mid-sized city not working on smart solutions,” Svitak said. The most critical part of a smart community is connectivity.Walker Hinshaw is the COO of Lumiere, the technology provider for a smart community in Colorado called Sterling Ranch. He says "fiber" is the technology being used to connect everything in these new communities, making internet speeds faster than ever.“Fiber’s really that passive component in the system, so as the electronics get better and better, we’re going to be able to have faster and faster speeds out here,” Hinshaw said.As technology improves, smart city enthusiasts believe life can get better, too.“Developers are realizing that there’s a huge return on investment for residents to better monitor their water or their energy, or improve the safety of their community by making sure the police can respond more quickly to an incident," Svitak said. "Maybe there’s even a camera that’s able to detect a traffic accident before anyone can pick up the phone and dial 911.” Hellmich believes it’s the future of housing and he’s looking forward to witnessing how it changes day-to-day life.“As technology progresses, it’s inevitable for it to make its way more and more into our homes,” Hellmich said.  3172

When Amy Anderson and her son walked into George Washington High School years ago they felt a gut-wrenching reaction, coming face to face with a larger than life mural depicting images of slavery and dead Native Americans.Tuesday evening, after decades of debate and outcry, the San Francisco Unified School District unanimously voted to cover up this 1936-era fresco, "Life of Washington."A fight started in the 1960sThe mural was commissioned by the US Government in 1936 under a New Deal art program and painted by well-known muralist Victor Arnautoff.During the Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960's, members of school's Black Student Union called for the removal of the mural.Instead of removing the mural then, the District hired black artist Dewey Crumpler to paint a "response mural," showing Native Americans and African Americans in a more positive light.Three years ago, the call for removal was reignited when Anderson's son Kai decided to enroll at Washington High.A Native American student at Washington HighAnderson and her son are Native American. Kai told his mom he would walk into school with his head down everyday so he would not have to see the murals on the wall."They (Native students) actually see themselves and their ancestors up there on those walls and they feel pain," said Anderson. In late fall of 2018, Anderson and fellow indigenous activist Mariposa Villaluna drafted a resolution to send to Mark Sanchez, a school board commissioner. The move resulted in the creation of the district's Reflection and Action Committee to decide what to do about the "Life of Washington" mural. In February, the committee recommended to the school board that the mural should be covered in white paint before the start of the 2019 school year.At odds with school valuesThe committee argued that the mural did not live up to the district's student-centered focus and did not represent its values of social justice, diversity, and unity. It added that the mural glorified slavery, genocide, and oppression. At Tuesday evening's school board meeting, those in favor of keeping the mural argued the that artist intended to provoke thoughtful discussions about oppression and that the mural could be used as a teaching tool for future generations.Villaluna said the school can find ways to teach these issues without students having to pass by the mural each morning."The students thought this would be good as a lesson but not something we walk by every day," said Villaluna.According to the 2517

When you think of budget cars, Elon Musk's Tesla probably doesn't come to mind. However, one man who specializes in fixing up electric automobiles found a way to own expensive vehicles. Rich Benoit runs a YouTube channel called Rich Rebuilds, and he quickly built a reputation for being the do-it-yourself guru of electric vehicles. One of Benoit’s first projects was working on a damaged Tesla model S, which would set someone back ,000. “And I said to myself, “Ya know what? I think I can try to fix that car,” Benoit says. However, Tesla wouldn't sell the parts he needed. So, Benoit found a second Tesla involved in a collision to use for parts and taught himself how to fix the car. In the end, he only spent about ,000. “You don't necessarily have to have a specific set of rules to go by, you just kind of do your own thing,” he says. “When I was looking at how to fix it, there [were] no manuals online. I just kind of went with my gut and said to myself, ‘this kind of makes sense. Let’s try it and see what happens.’” This success story not only gave him his YouTube fame, but he turned his hobby into a full-time job. "I started a company that actually fixes electric vehicles now, which is really unexpected but cool at the same time,” Benoit says. Whether you’re turning a classic gas guzzler into an electric vehicle or building a car from parts, he says just keep your feet on the gas.“It’s gonna sound super cliché, but just don't give up. It’s definitely something that's doable and attainable,” he says. “And if you think you can do it, just go out and do it. Set your mind to it be patient. Might take you four or five years, but you can do it. You can do anything.” 1706
