SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior Syrian official underlined on Sunday the importance of cooperation with China, especially in the fields of agriculture and food security.Talking to Xinhua on the sidelines of a joint Afro-Arab ministerial meeting, Nabi Rasheed, an aide to the Syrian minister of agriculture, said his country pays much attention to cooperation with China on agriculture and food security and looks forward to more joint projects in this regard."Syria and China cooperate with each other in the long term through the exchange of delegations and training programs. A high- level Chinese delegation led by the agriculture minister has visited us recently, when we discussed opportunities and means to boost agricultural cooperation. Syria will also take part in the 2010 Shanghai EXPO," the Syrian official said.Rasheed who headed his country's delegation to the Joint Afro- Arab Ministerial Meeting on Agricultural Development and Food Security which kicked off on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, said the current meeting has attached greater importance due to the drought which haunts many Arab and African countries and the global financial crisis.The recent food crisis caused the prices of many food stuff to ratchet up and the global financial crisis forced many countries to cut funds allocated to agricultural development, said the official."I hope the meeting will lay a concrete foundation stone for cooperation between Arab and African states at this vital stage," he said.The Syrian official added that the meetings aim to establish a common Arab-African strategy on agriculture and food security, pointing out that there is a plan to set up a follow-up, steering and coordination body along with a special fund to support the implementation of decisions to be sanctioned by the ministers.Rasheed added that his country has already taken tangible steps on food security, "Syria has successfully made food security years ago thanks to governmental policies and its support for the agricultural sector.""We have achieved this goal," he said, yet adding his country still faces challenges due to the recent drought which is the worst in 50 years.

ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries. Expo 2010 provides an opportunity to do this and we are pleased to invite companies and organizations with commercial or other interests in China to participate with us in the six month long Expo 2010 in Shanghai," he said.Salem Al Ameri, commissioner general of the UAE pavilion, said there are still many opportunities for UAE companies to take advantage of the exposition."Whilst this is not a commercial exhibition in the usual sense of the word, it does offer many excellent opportunities for companies in the UAE and China to get to know each other better and to explore partnership or other opportunities. YAOUNDE, March 23 (Xinhua) -- China and Cameroon said on Tuesday that they would make joint efforts to step up their parliamentary ties.The pledge came out of the hour-long talks between China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin and President of National Assembly of Cameroon Cavaye Djibril.Jia, the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top advisory body, is on a three-day official visit to the central African nation.This is the first visit to the African continent by a senior Chinese leader this year.Jia said that exchange and cooperation between the CPPCC and National Assembly of Cameroon would help boost people-to-people relationship and state-to-state relationship."The CPPCC would like to increase personnel exchanges with the National Assembly of Cameroon and discuss how to run the state and promote livelihood," Jia said.Djibril said the National Assembly of Cameroon stands ready to work more closely with the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and the CPPCC.On the broader China-Cameroon relationship, Jia said the two countries have withstood the test of time and vicissitudes in the international arena since they established the diplomatic ties in 1971."The two countries have reaped new harvests in recent years," Jia said, referring to bilateral cooperation in trade and economy, science and technology, education, among others.China appreciated Cameroon's adherence to the one-China policy and support to the most populous country on issues concerning China's core interests, Jia said.Jia reaffirmed that China would work with Cameroon and other African countries to implement eight new measures announced last year by Premier Wen Jiabao, including debt cancellation, agriculture production, infrastructure, education.As China and Cameroon will mark the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic ties, Jia called on the both sides to take the opportunity to boost exchanges at all levels and hold celebrations to uplift the relationship.Echoing Jia's proposal, Djibril said his country would like to cooperate with China to advance relationship and generate benefit for their peoples.Following the talks, Jia also delivered a key-note speech on China-African relationship.Jia will meet with President of Cameroon Paul Biya on Wednesday.Cameroon is the first leg of Jia's ten-day African tour which will also take him to Namibia and South Africa.
