The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a bright light on healthcare professionals and the need for more across the country.Xavier University, in Cincinnati, is working to fill the shortage by launching new programs across the state of Ohio. The college just added a third accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree based in Cleveland. It's a fast-paced program where students can earn a ABSN degree in just 16 months.“It’s been interesting with the pandemic and COVID to start a new program but we were very prepared," said Dr. Sandra Harris.Dr. Harris is the associate director of Cleveland's ABSN program. She said the first class, which began in May, consisted of just nine students, but that grew to 41 with the second class which began in August. Dr. Harris said the hope is that each cohort is comprised of 70 students to reach full capacity."It's been very positive," she said. "The students are excited to be here." The 16 months consists of 63 credit hours of online and onsite learning. The students complete the coursework online, take simulation labs at the Learning Center, based in Independence, and work alongside trained, professional nurses for clinicals partnering with the Cleveland Clinic.Though the pandemic is causing some roadblocks for students, the program came at an opportune time. Ohio, and much of the nation, is currently facing a shortage of nurses and healthcare professionals.“In acute care, in rehab and the emergency departments," Dr. Harris said.But the field has growing interest. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 7% from 2019 to 2029 - faster than the average for all occupations.Breanna Harper is one of the 41 students currently enrolled in the program. She earned a four-year degree earlier this year from Drexel University, located in Philadelphia, but she's hitting the books once again hoping to fulfill her dreams of becoming a nurse."It's what I'm passionate about," she said. "I've been taking care of people my whole life. I just want to help people feel their best self."The young professional moved to Cleveland from Vallejo, California specifically for the Xavier program and its affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic.“It's the perfect environment to learn what you need to learn to be a nurse. It’s a dream come true almost. You can’t ask for a better clinical experience," she said.Harper is currently working inside the Cleveland Clinic to earn her clinical hours. She said seeing the healthcare professionals in action has given her a new appreciation for their work."It takes a lot of love and a lot of dedication for what you're doing to come into work 12 hours, sometimes more, every single day with a smile on your face and you're not showing any strain or stress meanwhile they have other stuff going on like kids or a family," she said. "It's a lot of respect I have for them and it just shows how passionate you have to be to be in this type of field."Collin Ninke is also enrolled in the program. He said the program is certainly tough but he's enjoying the hands-on experience inside the hospitals.“It’s been tough. It’s been a handful but they give it to you in a really scheduled out way," he said.Ninke said he hopes to work inside an intensive care unit or emergency room after graduating next December.For Harper, her dream is to work inside a labor and delivery unit. A conservative legal group has filed a lawsuit against Maricopa County claiming that votes were disqualified because some people were given a Sharpie to fill out their ballots.The legal group, Public Interest Legal Foundation, says that the ink from the Sharpies bled through the ballots causing them not to be counted.The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office and the Secretary of State, however, both say concerns that surfaced Wednesday over the use of Sharpies are unfounded. Officials spoke out Wednesday morning, saying the use of a Sharpie to fill out a ballot is perfectly fine and no votes would be discarded for that reason. She claims she was told to submit the ballot anyway, and that it was denied. Neither the Secretary of State's Office nor County Recorder's Office have given any information on whether or not there was a separate issue that caused Aguilera's ballot to not be accepted.The questions over Sharpie use on ballots came as ABC News reported Wednesday that Gov. Doug Ducey told the White House he “sees something” that could get Arizona and its 11 electoral votes in the win column for the President. The Maricopa County Elections Department says even if marks made by Sharpies or any felt tip marker on a ballot bleed through the paper, it won't impact their tabulator's ability to read contests. Maricopa County's tabulators are designed only to read the ovals for each contest, according to county election officials. Even if ink bleeds through to the other side of the ballot, the ink won't mark another contest, since ballots are printed in an "off-set" pattern, meaning contests on the back side of the ballot don't align with those on the front.Republicans and the Trump campaign were shocked when Fox News declared Democrat Joe Biden the Arizona winner at about 9:30 p.m. on Election Day. INDIANAPOLIS — A homeless man was rescued from the back of a garbage truck near Indianapolis early Thursday.According to a report from the Decatur Township Fire Department, rescue crews were called shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday for an injured person.When they arrived, firefighters found an injured person inside the back of a garbage truck.Firefighters said the driver of the trash truck told them he had made two previous stops along Kentucky Avenue, reached his third stop and started the compactor without knowing someone was in the back. The driver told firefighters he heard a man yelling and immediately stopped the compactor and called 911.Firefighters said the man was extricated from the back of the garbage truck within 30 minutes and was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.According to firefighters, the man in the back of the garbage truck told rescue crews he was in the dumpster to stay warm because he was homeless. My heart breaks this morning at the loss of NBC audio technician Larry Edgeworth (pictured right) due to COVID19. I adored Larry. We traveled together for two straight months on a campaign in 2008 and he was always the most warm, most professional, most loving. All hours of the day and night, no matter how hungry or tired or stressed we were - he was always a joy. He loved his work and excelled at it. He loved his colleagues and boy did we love him. It is with great sadness that I post about the passing of Nikita Waligwa, the sweet, warm, talented girl whom I worked with on the film, Queen Of Katwe. She played Gloria with such vibrancy. In her real life she had the enormous challenge of battling brain cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and community as they come to terms with having to say goodbye so soon.
