SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Gulls will conduct Military Weekend at their games Friday and Saturday at Valley View Casino Center, including providing free tickets to more than 4,000 military members and their families.Military families will unfurl an American flag on the ice before the playing of the national anthem preceding Friday's American Hockey League game against the Stockton Heat.Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer Colin M. Cooper and Marine Corps Master Sgt. Eric W. Franklin will be honored as the Military Heroes of the Game.All fans in attendance will receive a free Gulls camouflage hat.Fans can take free military-themed photos in the interactive photo booth on the north concourse, near Section 6, and post them online for a chance to be featured on the arena's video screen during Friday and Saturday's games.Military vehicles will be on display during Saturday's pregame tailgate party, which will be held from 5-7 p.m.Service members and their families can skate with Gulls players following Saturday's game against the Ontario Reign. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police arrested a domestic violence suspect Friday morning after a standoff in La Mesa that temporarily blocked access to parts of Grossmont Center. The La Mesa and San Diego police departments responded to the situation at Grossmont Center Drive and Center Drive just before 8 a.m. Both streets were closed as officers worked to detain the suspect, La Mesa Police reported in a tweet.The situation started Thursday night when police received a call from the victim, saying she was choked by her ex-boyfriend at a residence on the 6800 block of Hyde Park Drive, San Diego police said.Police responded about 7:20 p.m. but the suspect already had fled in the girlfriend's car. Officers took a crime report and the victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa as a precautionary measure.The suspect returned to the residence this morning and the victim called the police again, according to SDPD. The suspect then drove to Grossmont Center, where police found him around 7:30 a.m. The suspect was arrested at 8:19 a.m. and taken into custody.The streets in the area were reopened around 8:30 a.m., SDPD said. 1145

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego's Metropolitan Transit System announced today 40 local high school students who took part in an annual essay contest were awarded new laptop computers and backpacks.Students from more than 70 high schools around the county entered the MTS and Coca-Cola Laptop Scholarship Contest, which required the applicants to submit an essay on ways to get more students to use public transit such as lowering student transit passes.The winning students, from 27 schools, received a 15.6-inch HP Touch-Screen laptop and a Northface backpack that doubles as a laptop case. MTS officials honored the winning students on Friday at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center."It was great that winners came from so many campuses,'' said MTS CEO Paul Jablonski. "Their essays presented convincing ideas. Students were required to think critically about the way public transit shapes our communities.''The contest comes from a partnership between MTS, Coca-Cola Refreshments of San Diego and the San Diego County Office of Education.
