SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Anyone touched by Alzheimer's knows how painful the disease is. "It's affected my family. It's affected most families. It's such a prevalent disease. As people get older, it becomes quite likely this will become an issue," said Paul Aisen, director of USC's Alzheimer's Therapeutic Research Clinic (ACTC).Aisen's team began their research in San Diego many years ago and teamed up with USC about four years ago. He's spent over 30 years trying to solve Alzheimer's mysteries and is leading the upcoming clinical trial.Aisen says the large-scale study is the culmination of decades of work from scientists worldwide."Our focus lately has been trying to alter the disease, prevent it, or significantly slow its progression. How should we do that? We think attacking amyloid early is the most promising approach," said Aisen. Researchers believe sticky amyloid deposits, which form on the brain later in life, start the Alzheimer's process. Aging, genetics, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to amyloid build-up.The worldwide clinical trial aims to target amyloid. A drug called BAN2401 will be delivered intravenously, designed to bind to the sticky amyloid. The binding neutralizes beta amyloid and helps "tag" it, so the immune system can recognize it and clear it from the brain. A previous phase 2 study showed that BAN2401 removes brain amyloid and possibly slows cognitive decline.They're seeking participants over 50 who are not yet showing symptoms of Alzheimer's but do have elevated amounts of amyloid on their brain. Researchers can determine that through a PET scan or spinal tap. "We think that the most promising approach of all is to take a vigorous attack on amyloid while the brain is still functioning normally. And we can see amyloid in people many years before they develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's."Investigators hope that by treating a patient with BAN2401 very early in the disease, before symptoms occur, it will significantly slow disease progression. "If we're successful, it will have a huge impact on human health," said Aisen. There will be 100 sites worldwide for the study, including major cities like San Diego and Los Angeles. Study participants will receive treatment for four years, given either the drug or a placebo. Results are expected in seven years, Aisen says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the election nears, millions of people will be glued to smartphones and computer screens, scrolling through social media for instant information.But platforms like Twitter and Facebook may not be the best sources for information."The way the algorithms work, they promote stuff that gets a lot of reaction or a lot of engagement," says University of San Diego Assistant Professor Colin Campbell. "The systems are designed to try to show you stuff that they think is going to actually make you excited or make you react in some way. And as a result, that tends to be the more polarizing stuff."But both sites have taken steps in 2020 to safeguard against misinformation.In a lengthy blog post about their election protocols, Twitter called their role in the election "critical," saying that people should "use Twitter respectfully and to recognize our collective responsibility to the electorate to guarantee a safe, fair, and legitimate democratic process."They adjusted their "Civic Integrity Policy" so that only verified and official accounts can tweet about election results. They're also imposing stricter punishments for Tweets calling for election interference or violence.Twitter also made changes to the way people interact with links posted on their platform.They've added warnings to misleading tweets and direct people to more credible information if they engage with a misleading post.They also now ask people to click on a link before Retweeting it and encourage "Quote Tweeting," where people can comment on what they're sharing instead of just reposting the original Tweet.Twitter also changed the format of its Trending section, adding context to topics and hashtags.Facebook, meanwhile, put a lot of effort into helping people vote. Their Voter Information Center helped 4.4 million people register to vote in 2020.They also banned all ads related to the election, politics, or other social issues during the entire month leading up to the election.To help keep misinformation from spreading, Facebook says they removed 120,000 posts from March through September for violating their Voter Interference Policies. They also issued 150 million warnings for content that was flagged as misleading by independent fact-checkers.Campbell says both platforms are a lot more reliable now than they were in 2016, but could still have done more. He believes it's because they didn't want to face criticism over censorship."From a pragmatic perspective, they probably don't want to get involved in the challenges of trying to go through and censor or decide what kind of stuff they want to have on the site," says Campbell.Even with all the changes, he says users still need to scroll with skepticism and filter the content they chose to engage with."I think it's very important that we're all vigilant," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As President Donald Trump threatens to shutdown the U.S.-Mexico Border, San Diego leaders are in Mexico City to strengthen economic ties and talk binational business.Five mayors and nearly 100 elected officials, business and community leaders from San Diego and Baja California left for Mexico Sunday for the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 14th annual Binational Delegation to Mexico City.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said the top two issues up for discussion are the continuing Mexican sewage runoff problems that impact our beaches and the free trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico.Monday, Mexican officials said 70 percent of trade with the U.S. is by trucks, and the Mexican Government is ready to collaborate with the U.S. to ensure border safety and that trade flows efficiently.“Free trade is incredibly important to our region here in San Diego,” said Faulconer. "We have over 100,000 jobs that are dependent upon trade with Mexico.”Faulconer said the goal is to create a safe, secure and functioning border. He is also calling for the approval of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.The Chamber also said advancing USMCA is a key priority of this week's meeting.Monday the delegation will discuss the U.S. Mexico trade relationship, including the border, immigration and economic development. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California has rejected San Diego County's request for a tier adjustment after the region was moved into the state's purple reopening tier.The county said that "San Diego’s increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier. County has interviewed cases to identify potential exposure settings and tracked community outbreaks."County health officials say businesses that will be impacted by purple tier restrictions saw the following breakdown of COVID-19 cases in October:Restaurant/bars: 7.4% of COVID-19 cases (715 of 9,646)Retail: 6.6% of COVID-19 cases (636 of 9,646)Places of worship: 1.9% of COVID-19 cases (184 of 9,646)K-12 schools: 1.7% of COVID-19 cases (165 of 9,646)Gyms: 0.4% of COVID-19 cases (39 of 9,646)In reference to October's data, the county said that, "outbreak data also show these sectors make up a small percentage of the cases overall ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Condo and townhome sales increased more than 7 percent from April to May in San Diego County, while single-family home sales held steady, the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors reported Monday. Attached property sales increased 7.3 percent from 983 in April to 1,055 in May. Month-over-month sales of single-family homes increased by just 0.7 percent from 2,023 in April to 2,037 in May. Property sales, which plunged during the winter, have had steady increases since January. The price of single-family homes rose 1.2 percent from 2,200 in April to 0,000 in May. Attached property prices grew 3.3 percent from 0,000 in April to 4,000 in May. ``Sellers still have the upper hand in this market,'' said SDAR President Kevin Burke. ``However, buyers who take the time to research neighborhoods should find more homes for sale than they would have a year ago.''
