TAIPEI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Counties and cities in Taiwan are bracing for the approaching typhoon Fanapi, as the local meteorological department forecasts it will make landfall over the eastern part of Taiwan early Sunday morning.Taitung, Yilan and Hualien counties announced schools were suspended as of Saturday night. Nantou county has evacuated some local residents living in danger areas in advance.The Maokong cable car, the longest one in Taiwan has halted operations.Tsengwen Reservoir, Taiwan's largest reservoir, has begun discharging water since Saturday noon, in preparation for heavy rains brought by Fanapi.TransAsia Airways, Mandarin Airlines and Uni Air have announced the cancellation of some Sunday flights.Some local farmers in Taitung County were racing against time to harvest crops, and fishing boats have returned to harbor.The eye of Fanapi was 420 kilometers east from Hualien County, as of Saturday noon, according to the local meteorological department.Taiwan will be prominently affected by Fanapi on Sunday and Monday, according to the forecast.

THATTA, Pakistan, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Sunday visited a mobile hospital set up by a Chinese search and rescue team in south Pakistan's Thatta, commending China's relief efforts for flood victims.The 55-member Chinese rescue team have set up tents and a mobile hospital at Thatta police headquarters late Saturday to provide medical services to the flood victims after they arrived at the district, about 100 km northeast of Karachi, Sindh Province.Thatta is now the worst flood-hit district where hundreds of thousands of people have been affected. BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China shut down 1,355 small coal mines with a total production capacity of 125.19 million tonnes by the end of September as part of efforts to restructure its mining industry, the National Energy Administration (NEA) said Thursday.The latest figures indicate that the NEA had surpassed its annual target of eliminating 121.67 million tonnes of outdated production capacity this year.According to the NEA, 1,539 small and dangerous coal mines with 121.67 million tonnes of outdated capacity had to be closed in China this year to meet the country's requirement for preventing deadly accidents and reducing carbon dioxide emissions and pollution.The energy watchdog also said it would strengthen inspection on small coal mines for the rest of the year and ensure that the mining restructuring plan be completed as scheduled this year.China has long relied on coal to fuel its rapid economic growth. About three-fourths of its electricity is generated from coal-fired power stations, according to the NEA.

BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's three-day U.N. visit this week has been fruitful as a major diplomatic effort at a time when new changes are emerging in the world economy and politics, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Friday.Wen was in New York from Tuesday to Thursday for the U.N. Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the general debate of the 65th session of the U.N. General Assembly, a summit of the U.N. Security Council member states, and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and MDGs. He also met with U.S. President Barack Obama on bilateral ties and regional and world issues, calling for more cooperation.Yang said Wen made the New York trip as the world economy stabilized and started to show improvement but the recovery remained unbalanced and was still not solid.The international community has, in general, made significant progress on meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the minister said. he said, however, more imminent is the imbalance in international development and there are new challenges in international cooperation and development.The developing countries want more attention from the international community on the development issue, the minister said, and countries are ever more willing to promote peace, development and cooperation.
