SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric warned its customers Tuesday that a new wave of scammers is targeting them and threatening to cut off their service unless they pay their utility bills immediately with prepaid cards. The most common tactic reported is scammers impersonating SDG&E's billing department and asking for payment via Green Dot MoneyPak, a way of sending cash via prepaid or bank debit cards.According to the utility, in these scams criminals typically threaten immediate power shutoffs to scare customers into making an immediate payment. Once customers purchase prepaid debit cards or make wire transfers based on the scammer's instructions, they are asked to call another phone number to provide the card information, which allows the thieves to steal the money. It can be especially confusing for victims, according to an SDG&E statement, as the phone number scammers use might play a recorded message and menu options that mimic SDG&E's official customer service line, which is 1-800- 411-7343. When victims call the number provided by scammers, they might hear a recorded message that tells them they are calling SDG&E's business line. They are given different menu options, including one to pay their bill or to report a gas leak or power outage.Utility officials say SDG&E will never:-- call a customer to proactively ask for payment information during the call. Customers may receive communications directing them to pay their bill via their MyAccount at sdge.com, use the Billmatrix system, or to call and use the automated pay-by-phone option at 1-800-411-7343-- request that a customer use pre-paid debit cards for payments or cryptocurrencies to pay their bill-- send emails with an online payment method with a QR codeIf a customer is asked for payment over the phone, it is a scam and they should hang up immediately.Utility officials say people should only provide financial information by telephone if the customer initiated the call. If asked to do so by a suspected scammer, they should hang up and call SDG&E directly to verify information about the account. Customers can also view their account status, including bills and payments, through SDG&E's mobile app or via sdge.com/myaccount."Criminals work year-round to come up with new ways to defraud people," according to a company statement. "SDG&E works hard to make sure customers know what to do if they are targeted. Unfortunately, scams are on the rise, especially during times of uncertainty and crises like with the pandemic."Victims of fraud are urged to call SDG&E immediately at 1-800-411-7343 to report it. 2656

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ride hailing company Lyft announced a partnership with San Diego's Fashion Valley today to establish dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones at the mall. The partnership creates six official Lyft Zones that will make it easier for drivers to find riders in areas of the shopping center that are less congested, company officials said. Using the zones will also give riders access to special discounts, according to Lyft.``Transportation can be a challenge when it comes to shopping at busy malls,'' Lyft San Diego Market Manager Hao Meng said. ``The introduction of Lyft Zones at Fashion Valley Mall will offer shoppers a seamless door-to-door solution that enhances their overall ridesharing experience.''The six Lyft Zones around the mall are adjacent to Verizon Wireless, the Nordstrom eBar, So Sushi, JC Penney, the AMC Fashion Valley 18 theater and Forever 21. The company is encouraging the use of the new Lyft Zones by offering 20% off two rides to or from the shopping center through June 8 when riders use the code ``LyftFVLaunch.''``Ridesharing is in great demand, and we're excited to offer this convenience to locals and tourists who want to visit our popular shopping center,'' said Fashion Valley Marketing Director Arianne Cousin. 1267

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of San Diego has reached an agreement with two local nonprofit organizations to improve its stormwater infrastructure and local water quality, it was announced today.Under the agreement, the city pledged to improve its stormwater management sites at the Miramar Landfill, Metro Biosolids Center, North City Reclamation Plant, Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant and South Bay Water Reclamation Plant. San Diego Coastkeeper and the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation will concurrently contribute ,000 to the San Diego Audubon Society to be used for water quality improvement and habitat conservation in Mission Bay.The city's Transportation and Storm Water Department, which oversees the Storm Water Division, declined to comment on the agreement, which was approved by a federal judge last Tuesday. City officials expect to finish the upgrades by the end of 2023, according to the two nonprofits involved in the agreement."We have a longstanding working relationship with the city's stormwater and public utilities departments, so we were confident they would take our concerns seriously and allow us to achieve environmental benefits without having to engage in expensive litigation," said CERF Executive Director Marco Gonzalez. The nonprofits began working with the city on upgrading stormwater treatment infrastructure in early 2017, when Coastkeeper and CERF noted that city-owned water treatment sites were disposing stormwater with toxic pollutants, bacteria from human waste, dissolved metals and other hazardous materials into local bodies of water. The two organizations specified that Rose Creek, San Clemente Creek, Mission Bay, Tijuana River and the Pacific Ocean were likely affected.A report released by the city auditor's office in June found that the city's Storm Water Division had a large backlog of planned infrastructure projects and failed to properly keep up with the backlog due to, among other things, a lack of funding. 1988

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to extend an agreement with Southern California Edison to receive emergency planning funds from the utility as it removes spent nuclear fuel from the decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station. The county's Office of Emergency Services entered a similar memorandum of understanding with SCE in 2015, through which the company provided radiological emergency planning funds to five jurisdictions around the plant, including San Diego County, through the end of Fiscal Year 2019-20.A county staff report estimates SCE will pay the county 6,500 in the remainder of the agreement. The remainder of the spent fuel is planned to be moved from spent fuel pools to dry cask storage by the end of this summer, but the memorandum approved by the board runs through the end of Fiscal Year 2049 or whenever all spent fuel is removed from the site -- whichever comes first. The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of California do not require decommissioned nuclear power plants to reimburse local jurisdictions for emergency planning, but SCE has agreed to continue paying jurisdictions surrounding the plant, for planning and preparation for radiological emergencies.San Onofre hasn't produced power since a steam leak in 2012, and SCE closed the plant the following year and began decommissioning activities. When the California Coastal Commission voted 9-0 last October to allow SCE to begin dismantling the plant, the canisters were being moved from a "wet storage" facility to a newly constructed "dry storage" facility on the site. San Onofre is located on 85 acres of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base and is home to 3.55 million pounds of spent nuclear fuel, the San Diego Union Tribune reported last year. The nuclear waste is being stored in self-cooling canisters which take in cool air and expel hot air. 1925

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped to 3.5 percent in February, with both farm and nonfarm employment showing gains, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday. The county's adjusted unemployment rate sat at 3.8 percent in January, its highest point since the third quarter of 2017. February's unadjusted rate is the same as its revised 2018 unemployment rate, according to the EDD.Nonfarm industries added 9,700 jobs between January and February, with total nonfarm employment increasing from 1,480,100 to 1,489,800.
