SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly one week after Election Day and with state Assemblyman Todd Gloria holding a comfortable lead, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry conceded in the race for San Diego mayor.As of Nov. 9 vote totals, Gloria was leading Bry 56% to 46%.During a virtual press conference on Monday, Bry said she called Gloria the day before and offered her congratulations. Regarding the campaign, Bry said she felt voters were misled by the media and political ads from the opposition.Bry said, "I want to congratulate Todd Gloria as the next mayor of San Diego. He and I spoke by phone yesterday, and I offered him my congratulations. But for the next few years, our city faces many challenges because of COVID-19, and Mr. Gloria will have a tough job. Thousands of San Diegans are unemployed through no fault of their own and city revenues are declining."She added, "I wish those issues could have been more central to the mayoral campaign. We certainly tried to make them the focus of our communications. Unfortunately, interest groups supporting my opponent took a different approach.Perhaps inspired by the ‘fake news’ rhetoric coming out of Washington, they spent over million on TV commercials and mailers cynically designed to fool voters into thinking they were sponsored by our campaign. In times past, dishonest advertising of that sort would have been called out by responsible journalists, and voters would have been made aware of these cynical tactics. But the media -- like many citizens -- has become so desensitized to such tactics that they no longer pique their interest. And, unfortunately, these dishonest attacks clearly impacted our campaign."When asked if she would run for mayor again, Bry said she may not seek public office again. She added she plans to take time off with her family before her next endeavor.Bry, 71, will remain on the San Diego City Council until Dec. 10. She has served as the District 1 council representative since 2016.Gloria issued the following statement in response to Bry's concession:“I want to thank Councilmember Bry for her service to our City and I wish her and her family well. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Pint-sized protesters lined the sidewalks outside of Cardiff Elementary School, holding signs reading "BUILD OUR SCHOOL!"The District began construction in June, tearing down old buildings to make room for new ones. The project is being paid for by a million voter-approved bond from 2016.Principal Julie Parker says the school is over 100 years old and that the buildings they tore down were 60-70 years old and outdated. Right now, students are in temporary accommodations. "These are our eight portables, these portables are about ten years over their lifespan now, as you can see they're rusted out."Parker says rainwater leaked into three of the portable classrooms during recent storms. She says the temporary accommodations were only supposed to last a year, but a new lawsuit is now halting the construction progress. "We're continuing to pursue legal avenues in order to make construction continue again because it is obviously detrimental to students who attend school here," said Parker.A group called Save the Park and Build the School filed the lawsuit.Cardiff resident Eleanor Musick is the group's director."We're only asking the District to follow the law, and who more than a public agency should we be able to expect to follow the law? And they gambled. They gambled with our taxpayer money, they gambled with the kids, they tore down all those buildings when they didn't have all the approvals, and they still don't have the approvals," said Musick. Save the Park believes the District had an inadequate environmental impact report, which a judge agreed with. They also allege the school district's plan goes beyond what was initially approved in the bond measure.The group also opposes the construction of a multipurpose building on District-owned land, which is open to the public after hours. The land has federal protections, and Musick says the District only received a conditional approval from the National Park Service to move forward. But the District says it is subject to two straightforward conditions that are in the process of being completed. They add that the California Department of Parks and Recreation Office of Grants and Local Services approval recommends that the National Park Service approve the grant boundary adjustment for the project. Principal Parker says putting the multipurpose room on that land, and separating it from the school, is essential because the building will sometimes need to be accessed by the public for non-school-related functions. Parents say they're frustrated by the lawsuit and don't want to see their kids stuck in temporary accommodations while the legal process plays out. "There's no covered eating area so when it rains their backpacks get wet, they have to eat in their classroom. They have very limited play area. They have no common room to gather in. But we all knew this was the small price, and the expectation was that students would be back in classrooms next year," said Annessa Baird, a Cardiff parent of two.Many parents believe Save the Park's agenda is questionable and that they actually want to protect their ocean views.Musick says that's false and that her view was worse before construction. "One of the first things I tried to argue and plead with the District was don't cut down all the trees. There were some beautiful 75-year-old Torrey pines on that property, and they blocked my ocean view. And they're all cut down now," said Musick.She also says claims that their group is made up of only a handful of people is false and that dozens have contributed to the effort. The District says it's disappointed with the judge's ruling and that it will add to mounting legal fees and project costs.The District intends to ask the Court to reconsider its decision. 3788

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New documents in a search warrant reveal evidence in the investigation of the Poway synagogue shooting during which one person was killed and three were injured. Evidence cited in the documents confirms rumors that have been spread over the last two months surrounding a possible live stream and an alternative chat room site where many alleged John T. Earnest adopted his hateful ideology.The document states, "San Diego Police Department ("SDPD") Officers responded to that location and took John Earnest into custody without further incident. Seen on the front passenger seat was an AR-I5 rifle but no handgun was visible. Additionally, in the vehicle was a helmet with a Go-Pro camera on it."The document later describes the suspect's disposition after officers made contact. "At that time, Earnest did not appear to be under the influence of a controlled substance but did appear to have a 'flat affect' as though he was detached or unaffected by his actions," the document says.The document brings up the manifesto that was the subject of a previous 10News report. "An SDSD system data miner, found a manifesto on Pastebin.com written by a person identifying himself as John Earnest," the document says. "In the manifesto, which he named 'An Open Letter.'"On page six of the document, there is a reference to how Earnest adopted his ideology. "During that interview, he informed an SDSO Detective that he had adopted his ideology of hate for members of the Jewish religion approximately 18 month earlier. Based on my training and experience, I know that there is a process in which someone undergoes adoption of radical ideologies. This process can take several months or several years before a person actually commits to those ideologies. During the interview, Earnest also stated that he was inspired by individuals such as Adolph Hitler and Brenton Tarrant."The document also looks at a Facebook post, from a page investigators linked to Earnest. "Earnest made a posting in which he thought to draw attention to his forthcoming attack on the Chabad of Poway, share his views through his open letter, and offer people the opportunity to observe the attack itself," the document says.The document also contains statements referring to the alternative message board site 8chan, where many believe Earnest adopted a hateful ideology. "Earnest stated in the subject posting, "I've only been lurking for a year and a half, yet, what I've learned here is priceless." This information suggests that Earnest was inspired and/or educated by individuals who commented on his threads."The document explains how hard it is to track users on the site and how easy it is to modify or erase information on the site. For those reasons investigators wanted to keep the search warrant sealed.In attached files, the document shows comments from 8chan users asking "anyone had a decent read of the manifesto yet?" As well as "Anybody not already at least on a vpn [virtual private network] is playing with fire here, don't get yourselves caught before actually making an effort."Earnest will be in court for the preliminary hearing for his state case on August 19. 3182
