DENVER, Colorado — Katherin Silvas has spent a lifetime wondering where she came from. When she was a baby, she was adopted.“You feel kind of alone,” Silvas said.She only knows a few things about her biological mother; she was 15 years old when she had Katherin, and she is from Kentucky."I even went to the extent of giving my biological mother a name. Whether you receive matches to your parents or siblings, it depends who's taking the test. Even if you don't as an adoptee get a match with the parent or the sibling you're looking for, we've seen so many cases where people have had a match with an uncle or even a second or third fourth cousin and it's through that match that they're able to close the loop," Mendelsohn said.One of the biggest concerns is privacy, people who've given up a baby for adoption who did so with an understanding that it would be completely private, not knowing that DNA technology years later could ignore that."For someone who may have over a long period of time built up expectations for whatever reunion would look like they would be very disappointed if it didn't go the way that they had hoped," said Ryan Hanlon with the National Council for Adoption. He thinks it can be problematic; some people don't want to be found and when people go looking it can end in heartache."For those instances where an individual doesn't want to be found or doesn't want to be connected to it can be disconcerting for them," Hanlon said.But others point to the examples of good outcomes times when people are able to reunite.That's why Silvas is looking forward to the possibility of finding her biological family even if there's a risk she will be disappointed."It's a need to feel connected with anyone else on this globe besides my daughter," she said. 3034

(KGTV) - The Del Mar City Council voted to add more enforcement to their community, specifically targeting people who are not following county health orders regarding masks.The city currently contracts with the sheriff’s department for one single deputy to be on the clock 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but with this new addition, two more part-time deputies will be added. The two will work four hours a week, likely on the weekends, patrolling the streets as usual, with an extra eye on people violating county health orders. The focus will be on education first, but violations could result in a misdemeanor costing up to ,000. That money does not go back to the city of Del Mar, but rather to the county.City Councilman Dave Druker has lived in Del Mar for 34 years. He said recently, crowds visiting the beach community have discouraged locals from leaving their homes, so the goal is not only keep visitors safe but also support locals.“There’s a whole lot of people in town that are, at this point, terrified to go out,” said Druker.He said with their small community and large crowds of visitors, the one deputy was not enough to keep up with the rules.“Because our budget is based on 4,000 people and we have close to 20,000 people on a daily basis here, we thought we should add a little bit of enforcement to this,” said Druker.The total cost of the additional positions for the next four months is ,000, which will come from the 0,000 that Druker said the City Council set aside for COVID-19 relief efforts. Del Mar, Calif. (KGTV)- California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of gun bills into law Friday, including a bill that will prohibit gun and ammunition shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The bill was authored by State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-78)."People have the right to continue to buy guns at private establishments. The state just shouldn't have a role in facilitating the flow of guns into neighborhoods where children are killed," Gloria told 10News in an interview shortly after returning from the bill signing in Sacramento.Gloria was inspired to act by anti-gun violence advocates who began protesting the Crossroads of the West Gun Show, held five times each year at the Fairgounds. Groups such as "Never Again CA" began the protests shortly after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.Crossroads President Tracy Olcott told 10News the company plans to sue the stop the law from taking effect. "Gun shows are not the place where gun violence is created. We're the ones who are educating about gun safety and I think when you have an environment where you can talk about it and educate people, I think that's an important part of curbing gun violence."The next gun show will be held in December.
