SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid the national conversation on systemic racism, there is growing momentum for a campaign to change the name of a local high school and its mascot.Recently, sisters Emma and Charlotte Taila described the time to act as "a now-or-never moment."Emily is a recent graduate of Serra High School. Charlotte is an incoming junior. They started a Change.org petition drive, reviving an effort to change the school's mascot, a conquistador."[The mascot] represents Spanish colonialism and the brutal impact that it had on Native Americans," said Emma.The numbers of signatures climbed quickly, and then, they got some surprise backing from school leadership."She liked the mascot change and wanted to go a step further and go for a rebranding," said Charlotte."She" is Serra High principal Erica Renfree. In an email to the school community, she proposed not just a mascot change, but a name change to Tierrasanta High School.Serra High School is named after Father Junipero Serra, a canonized saint who founded Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769."With the establishment of missions, he participated in a lot of cultural erasure and violence again Native Americans," said Emma.In the past week, protesters have toppled statues of Father Serra in San Francisco and Los Angeles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community.With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High.The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An elderly woman died while she was with her family waiting to cross the border into San Diego Sunday afternoon, according to our reporting partner Televisa.Televisa reported it is unknown why the woman, who was in her late 80s, passed away.This comes as people on both sides of the border expressed frustration at incredibly long wait times."It's unfortunate because I think the policies that CBP puts in place, protocols, punish border crossers," Pedro Rios said. He said it took four hours to cross in Otay Mesa on Saturday.New protocols went into effect on Friday due to the pandemic. Customs and Border Protection planned on slowing down traffic, closing lanes and adding secondary inspections, aimed at delaying those traveling for non-essential reasons.In addition to San Diego, Tucson, Arizona, El Paso, and Laredo Texas have similar protocols in place.One woman waiting to cross into San Ysidro told Televisa, "Yes it is difficult, but no one wants to be here in Tijuana."Another woman said they were heading to the U.S. to visit friends and go to the beach. When Televisa asked if they thought that was essential travel, they replied in Spanish, "Yes, because we're tired and angry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A two-year-old girl found strapped to the chest of an immigrant teenager is in the custody of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials, the U.S. Border Patrol said Monday.The girl was part of a group of six undocumented immigrants found traveling near Campo Nov. 27, officials said.The 17-year-old boy who was carrying the girl said she had been with her mother the previous night, but the mother became tired and asked the teen to hold her daughter. When the group separated, he could not locate the mother, he told Border Patrol officials.Authorities are trying to reunite the girl with her mother.The U.S. Border Patrol said it maintains a high level of vigilance in border zones to prevent the smuggling of humans, drugs, and other contraband. 780

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Unified School Board Trustee is moving forward with a possible settlement over accusations of date-rape and other sexual advances.Kevin Beiser is facing accusations of date-rape, groping, and other sexual advances, brought forth by four men, including his former political consultant and former campaign manager. Beiser has denied all allegations since they surfaced in March.The settlement could indicate a preference to not allow a jury to decide whether Beiser is innocent of the accusations, according to political analyst John Dadian."The oldest rule in the book is if you go to trial, even if you are innocent, you never know what jury is going to do. That's exactly why people do settle," Dadian said.The victims' attorney told 10News he could not comment on the case to the media as part of the agreement. In March, Beiser was placed on leave from his teaching position in Chula Vista. The San Diego County Democratic Party has asked for Beiser to resign from the school board.Despite the scandal, Beiser has announced that he will be running for San Diego City Council next year as well. 1135
