EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of El Cajon is days away from unveiling their new million dollar animal shelter to the public and gave 10News a sneak peek on Tuesday.The new shelter is double the size of the current facility, which was built in the 1950's, and features state-of-the-art amenities.The city believes it will dramatically improve the adoption experience for East County residents."With more room comes more ability to provide the standard of care expected for these types of animals," said Dirk Epperson, Director of Public Works for the City of El Cajon.The facility has a medical center and operating room as well as a full-service grooming station.There will also be several 'get to know you rooms' where potential adopters can get one-on-one time with the animals.Epperson says efficiency is a theme in the new facility, making it easier and more environmentally-friendly for shelter employees to do their jobs. The grand opening is Saturday, June 2 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m and adoption fees will be offered for all animals.The shelters will be closed from Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1. EL CAJON (CNS) - One person has died in a traffic collision today just south of El Cajon, along northbound State Route 125 at Kumeyaay (8) Highway, authorities said.It occurred at 12:40 a.m. and was reported as being between a tow truck and another vehicle, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said.The scene was cleared by authorities just before 3:40 a.m., the CHP dispatcher said.A La Mesa Police Department dispatcher said they assisted with some traffic control during the incident response.No other information was available. 542

(KGTV) -- A former Uber driver who pleaded guilty to raping a female passenger and sexually assaulting as many as 14 others was sentenced in court Wednesday.A judge sentenced John David Sanchez, 53, to 80 years in prison. Sanchez pleaded guilty in August to 34 charges including rape and sodomy of an unconscious person.Sanchez was initially arrested about a month after a woman told police she was raped by Sanchez in February of 2016.RELATED: Uber driver accused of rape to be arraignedSanchez was fired by Uber. EL CAJON (KGTV) - After 50 years of service, the well-known San Diego Highway Man is retiring. Thomas Weller has been helping thousands of people stuck on the side of the road since 1966. He tells 10News he started helping after a man helped him in a blizzard when he was a teenager living in Illinois.“I was on my way home about one or two in the morning and the blizzard put me off the road into a snow bank," said Weller.Weller says he never forgot that moment and hoped to be that saving grace for many others. Turns out he tells us he’s lost track of how many people he’s helped.“More than ten thousand, it's just I never keep track.” Weller had a stroke back in March and since then decided it’s best given his limited capabilities to retire.“I’ve lost my strength and my agility, not my judgment yet because I’m still driving.” He tells 10News it’s for the best that he retires because of how increasingly dangerous distracted driving has made the roads."It’s just extremely dangerous out there, more so now than it used to be.”While he is giving up one of his favorite passions in life, he isn’t giving up his outlook on life, “the most beautiful compensations of this life you cannot sincerely help another without helping yourself in the bargain.” 1266
