The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the second vaccine to receive the FDA’s emergency use authorization, is on its way to states, according to officials with Operation Warp Speed, the task force overseeing the nationwide vaccine distribution.During a press conference Saturday morning, U.S. General Gustave Perna, COO of Operation Warp Speed, said “distribution of (the) Moderna vaccine has already begun.”Moderna’s vaccine was approved for emergency use on Friday evening. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was approved for emergency use a week earlier.“Boxes are being packed and loaded today. Trucks will begin rolling out tomorrow, from FedEx and UPS, delivering vaccines and kits to the American people across the United States," Perna said. "This week, in total, between Pfizer and Moderna, we have allocated 7.9 million doses of vaccine."He also took responsibility for discrepancies state leaders reported last week citing reductions in the amount of Pfizer vaccine doses they would be receiving. More than a dozen states said they were told by the federal government that next week's shipment of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine would be 20-to-40% less than originally projected. Perna said they are keeping an eye on manufacturing numbers and adjusting distribution in the short-term. USA Today is reporting the discrepancy is because of how many vaccines are able to be approved by quality control measures and released for distribution, not just how many doses are manufactured. “I want to take personal responsibility for the miscommunication,” he said. “I know that’s not done much these days. But I am responsible. This is a herculean effort and we are not perfect.”Perna did say “we remain on track to allocate around 20 million doses of vaccine to all jurisdictions by the end of December, with distribution of those doses pushing into the first week of January.”Perna joined other health experts in reminding Americans that just because the vaccine is being distributed, that doesn’t mean mask-wearing, social distancing and other precautions can be relaxed."Each shipment of vaccine is another few yards gained, but any good player or coach knows that you still need defense, along with offense, to win the game. I join our health professionals in urging Americans to stay diligent in their defense,” Perna said. 2322

The little girl who went viral for being awestruck with Michelle Obama's portrait dressed as the former first lady this Halloween.Earlier this year, then-2-year-old Parker Curry was photographed staring at Amy Sherald's portrait of Obama at the National Portrait Gallery, completely enthralled with the image towering over her. When Halloween rolled around, Parker, now 3, stepped out for trick-or-treating dressed as Obama, complete with a gown that replicates the Milly dress that the first lady is wearing in her portrait, according to posts on her Twitter and Instagram accounts.Obama responded on Twitter Thursday morning, saying "You nailed the look, Parker! I love it!"It was Parker's idea to be Obama and "her first immediate response" when asked what she wanted to dress as for Halloween, her mother Jessica Curry told CNN."We asked her a few times, 'Are you sure?'" Curry told CNN. "'Yes, I do. I want to be Michelle Obama.'"Parker's dress was a gift from Alisha Welsh, who runs a small, family based company in New York, Magnolia Lake Children's Clothing, according to Curry. Welsh had offered to make Parker her own Obama dress back in March when she was inspired by the photo of Parker. When Parker first saw the dress that arrived on Halloween morning, Curry recalled, "her jaw dropped.""She was just like, 'Wow.' She was really excited. She was giggly," Curry said.Curry told CNN that when she asked Parker if she liked the dress, Parker replied, "'It's perfect.'"When trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, "some people did recognize the dress and were tickled although none of them probably made the connection that (it) was Parker," Curry told CNN. "She got way too much candy."Curry told CNN that Parker asked to wear it again Thursday morning to school. Curry said that she would not be surprised if Parker picked to be Obama again next Halloween.BuzzFeed News was the first to report on Parker's costume choice.Back in March, Curry told CNN that Parker "believes Michelle Obama is a queen, and she wants to be a queen as well.""As a female and as a girl of color, it's really important that I show her people who look like her that are doing amazing things and are making history so that she knows she can do it," she told CNN then. That viral image of Parker entranced by Obama's portrait led to her coming face to face (and having a dance party) with her idol in real life and later an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." 2459

The investigation regarding the photo taken by firefighters at 611 South Green Street is complete. The investigation reveals that firefighters did enter the location to initiate fire suppression operations. However, due to concerns about structural integrity, the firefighters were ordered out to assume a defensive posture. During this transition from offensive operations to defensive operations, a suggestion was made to take a photo, with the retiring battalion chief, in front of the building.Detroit Firefighters risk their lives everyday entering burning buildings and performing dangerous technical rescues. Saving lives and saving property is our mission, and the men and women of DFD execute this mission without hesitation. I hold them in high esteem; we should all hold them in high esteem for their sacrifices. This momentary lapse in judgment brought great embarrassment to our department and our great city. For this poor judgment, all involved will be held accountable. Because this is a personnel matter, I cannot discuss details of the discipline. However, supervisors and above will receive a greater degree of disciplinary accountability. I am satisfied that everyone involved has shown the appropriate level of regret for this inappropriate behavior. The Detroit Fire Department will continue to provide excellent, rapid service to the citizens of Detroit. 1384

The Justice Department has dropped its case against a woman who laughed out loud during the confirmation hearing for Attorney General Jeff Sessions, ending months of legal wrangling. The woman, Desiree Fairooz, was protesting with Code Pink, a progressive group whose activists are regularly seen around Washington. She was arrested by a Capitol Police officer after audibly laughing during Sessions' confirmation hearing in January. But prosecutors filed a "nolle prosequi," or notice that it would no longer pursue charges, with the DC Superior Court on Monday. She had been prosecuted by the DC US Attorney's Office and had been convicted of a misdemeanor before a judge threw out the conviction in July and ordered a new trial. The government had decided to retry the case after Fairooz rejected a plea deal, and a trial date had been set for next week.Fairooz tweeted the notice was a "relief" Monday night."Just received this, "Governments Notice of Nolle Prosequi" What a relief! Guess they've got enough "laughing" matters to deal with!" she tweeted. The US Attorney's Office declined to explain what had changed."The US Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia yesterday filed a notice dismissing the case involving Desiree Ali-Fairooz," said spokesman Bill Miller. "The US Attorney's Office typically does not discuss charging decisions, and has no comment on the decision to dismiss this particular case."The original arrest happened after Fairooz laughed after Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby told senators at Sessions' confirmation hearing that his former colleague had a record of "treating all Americans equally under the law."Her laughter lasted a few seconds and Shelby continued with his speech without acknowledging the disturbance.Fairooz's attorney said in a statement his client is "relieved and happy" about the result."Yesterday the government dismissed the case for reasons I can only speculate about. And which I may never fully know (though I have various theories)," Samuel Bogash said in an email. "Though as her lawyer I would have preferred a 'not guilty' at the first trial, I'm happy for Ms. Fairooz." 2156

The largest nutrition study in the world could change the way people eat as researchers indicate that your genes aren't the reason for your weight loss or gain.Susan Kim, 49, an Illinois mom, wife and teacher who was flat out fed up, and tired of struggling with her weight, a problem she's battled her whole life.“I was scrolling through my phone one day and I saw this study that I started reading- and I was intrigued,” Kim said. She admits she also wanted to prove a point to her husband of 20 years."He has maintained if I would only eat what he eats then my problems would be solved and there’s sugar in his food too and that’s a lie. That’s not the key,” Kim said. She signed up to be a part of The Predict Study commissioned by King’s College in London. A research team sent her everything she needed, including a box with a way to submit her blood, saliva and glucose.Researchers say the Predict study has allowed them to predict an individual's response to food.“The study showed us there’s no such thing as an average person-when it comes to food, we’re all different and unique and this is not something that food manufacturers or anyone else wants to tell you they want everyone to be the same,” Dr. Tim Spector, who is a senior researcher.Spector and his team of scientists gathered huge amounts of data, using Zoe, a data science company, and artificial intelligence to personalize nutrition.“The idea was to come up with enough information from research from very large studies around the world- and put it together in a format used in advertising and internet based procedures that would come up with algorithms that would tell an individual what the best way to eat is,” Spector said. The team worked off of probabilities, but they also have lots of new technology to use.“We can look at your gut microbes in a very detailed way,” Spector said. “We have glucose monitors that will tell you what your glucose level is. We’ve got finger prick tests people can do at home that will tell you what your blood fat is doing. We’ve got exercise monitors, sleep monitors and apps that record everything you’re doing and how you’re feeling every minute of the day.”There were identical twins in the study who had different responses to food. Hollywood actress Dame Emma Thompson also participated in the study."She has a big interest in health in general and as an actress, is always conscious of her health and her weight and wanted to find out more about nutrition,” Spector said about Thompson. “She claimed to have been on every diet under the sun and wanted to learn what the latest cutting-edge science was.”Spector says Thompson is doing well and is thoroughly enjoying what she's learning about her body. The personalized plans developed from the Predict study help you eat food that reduces inflammation. It's based off your biology, not deprivation popular fad diets. It's also not a diet or calorie restrictive plan, according to Spector.“We’re talking about every time you have French fries or too much carbohydrates or a big fatty load that stresses your blood and metabolism and if you keep getting these stresses, it builds up long term inflammation in your body,” he said. “Your body is always stressed and reacting like its infected or fighting something.”Kim has lost about 12 pounds in 5 weeks, and says that's purely by logging food, using the soon to be launched Zoe App and paying attention to how her body responds to certain foods. The at home test kit is based on tests but allows people to pay attention to their own biology. For Kim, that meant paying attention to what things caused her blood sugar to spike, and which meals are the best for her to function.“It’s personalized just for me,” Kim said. “It cuts through all of the confusion of what to eat. It’s incredibly simple, I’m never hungry or deprived (with) no emphasis on counting calories no buying packaged meals.”Researchers say they've got an explosion of data that will move dieters from the stone age to the modern world of nutrition, one that reduces a short term problem, for long term results. Zoe is accepting people for its waitlist and will be available this July.“I can stay on this for life I really feel like that,” Kim said, attesting to the smartphone app’s effectiveness. 4286
