(KGTV) - A NASA astronaut with a special tie to San Diego is preparing for her trip to the International Space Station. Wednesday morning, 10News Anchor Jim Patton spoke to Dr. Jessica Meir, who earned her Doctorate in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She’ll be taking her first space flight as part of the next crew going to the ISS. "There is definitely a Scripps Institution of Oceanography flag as well as some other items from San Diego," said Astronaut Jessica Meir, speaking from Star City, Russia, where she's been training for the past year and half. She'll be applying her scientific skills to a myriad of experiments some 250 miles above the earth. "We will be on board for about six months,” said Meir. “That's the average length of a space station mission these days. And we will be conducting all kinds of scientific investigations, ranging from how our blood vessels and arteries are actually thickening and stiffening in response to the spaceflight environment. And how it affects all of our physiological systems." Meir says the research is part of the quest to send humans to Mars. Much of the work is at the leading edge of science but some is as practical as your kitchen. "Do we have a progress for trash?" Meir can be seen asking a fellow crew member as they train on a mock-up of the space station. "Where do you think we're keeping trash right now?" While very down to earth, Meir says all the training is very necessary. "When we have anything that breaks, like a toilet or need to change a light bulb, we can't call a plumber or electrician. We have to do all that stuff ourselves as well." Of course, all of this amid a little background fact: it requires the guts to blast-off from the comforts of Earth into the ultimate hostile environment of space. "How do you have the courage inside to do something like that,” asked Patton. "I think the biggest answer is the amazing training here on the ground," answered Meir. "The teams in Houston, all over NASA, and here in Russia as well. They prepare us for any situation." Jessica Meir and her crew are scheduled to take off from Russia on Sept. 25. Not the aliens, but the alien enthusiasts.Almost 2 million people clicked the "going" button on a Facebook page set up by a California man seeking to storm Area 51, the super-secret military base in Nevada, to "see them aliens." The date for this "raid" is Friday.The page's creator disavowed the whole thing and Facebook took down the page, but events are still planned, and that's led officials in Nevada to worry that thousands of people really will try to get onto the base, potentially creating a crisis situation in the middle of the desert.The creator underestimated the allureMatty Roberts was just joking. He didn't believe anyone would take him seriously when, on June 27, he created a Facebook page for an event entitled "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us."But Roberts may have underestimated the allure of Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force base in southern Nevada. It's long been a topic of fascination for conspiracy theorists and paranormal enthusiasts who believe it to be the location where the US government stores and hides alien bodies and UFOs. Just this week, the US Navy acknowledged that some videos of UFOs are indeed images of objects that can't be identified.Roberts said he came up with the idea for the meme page after podcaster Joe Rogan interviewed Area 51 whistleblower Bob Lazar and filmmaker Jeremy Corbell. Lazar claims that he worked with an alien spacecraft while he was employed in one of Area 51's underground facilities.The Air Force didn't see the joke in any of this and promised to stand "ready to protect America and its assets," so Roberts switched tactics. He started promoting a music festival, Alienstock, to be held this weekend in Rachel, Nevada, one of the closest towns to the base. But he pulled out of the festival last week, because he feared it would turn into a "humanitarian disaster.""Due to the lack of infrastructure, poor planning, risk management and blatant disregard for the safety of the expected 10,000+ AlienStock attendees, we decided to pull the plug on the festival," he wrote on a website for the festival. They're afraid that some people really will try to "storm" the desert base or put themselves in danger trying.There are not enough accommodationsRachel has a population of 54 and is surrounded by ghost towns and desert. The town boasts only four businesses in its city limits, and the Little A'Le'Inn is the only one that provides lodging and food.According to its website, the inn is "booked solid." The inn has 14 rooms, and camping space is now the last available option.To make matters worse, Rachel's only gas station closed in 2006, so visitors will have to fill their tanks 50 miles away in Alamo, Nevada.Even a thousand visitors to the area could put a strain on emergency services, Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee told CNN last month."We could probably handle it, but it could definitely cause issues. Heaven forbid the number is 5,000 people where you almost double the size of the county," he said.But the number of people isn't even Lee's main concern. He said exposure to the environment is what he is worried about."I could see people with a lot of heat-related issues, and with our limited resources up here it could definitely jeopardize their safety. The number of people could overwhelm our EMS in a hurry," he said.Two people have already tried to get on the base. Earlier this month, two Dutch men were arrested about three miles deep into the Nevada National Security Site, which is near Area 51. They pleaded guilty to trespassing and illegal parking. (KGTV) — An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy in the care of U.S. Customs and Border Protection died shortly after midnight Tuesday in New Mexico, officials say.The child was in CBP custody when an agent noticed him showing signs of illness Monday. The child and his father were transferred to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in New Mexico, where staff diagnosed the boy with a common cold and fever.The boy was released with prescriptions for Ibuprofen and amoxicillin later that day, officials said.RELATED: The final hours of Jakelin Caal Maquin, the Guatemalan girl who died in Border Patrol custodyMonday night, officials said the boy began vomiting and was taken back to the medical center, where officials say he died shortly after midnight Tuesday. (KGTV) - Families who are caught illegally entering the U.S. will likely be broken up under a new border security policy that is now in effect, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.The newspaper, citing a Department of Homeland Security official, reported a new Trump administration policy would separate parents and children in the event a family is detained for crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.In a news conference Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the separation is due to the legal process, adding that citizens in the U.S. are also separated from their families when they're arrested.According to the report, families that are detained for illegal crossings have typically been kept together in the past. (KGTV) - A bill that would create the option for a third gender marker on California driver's licenses and birth certificates is heading to the state Senate.SB 179, also known as the Gender Recognition Act and introduced by Senator Toni Atkins, passed through the State Assembly 50-13 and will now return to the Senate for approval of amendments made in the assembly.If approved in the Senate, it will head to Governor Jerry Brown's desk for signing.RELATED: San Diegan third in nation to change gender to 'nonbinary'California Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), a co-author of the bill, said the legislation aims to end the stigma and hardships Californians face when it comes to government documentation.“All too often, members of our transgender, intersex, and nonbinary community experience hardships and even stigma when their government documents don’t match their gender presentation," Gloria said in a release. "Despite the divisive rhetoric at the federal level, SB 179 demonstrates the inclusiveness of California and represents recognition from government that people can exist as more than just male or female."In addition to a third gender marker on state-issued identification documents, the bill is also designed to "streamline" the process for transgender, intersex, and nonbinary Californians to get those certificates.RELATED: Oregon becomes first state to allow gender-neutral licensesCurrently, changes to gender in California require proof of "clinically appropriate treatment." Atkins' bill does away with this requirement.Under the bill, anyone who chooses to change their gender would be allowed to "to attest, under penalty of perjury, that the request is to conform the person’s legal gender to the person’s gender identity and not for any fraudulent purpose."If approved, this portion of the bill would go into effect September 2018.In the case of driver's licenses, the bill would require an applicant to have the choices of male, female, or nonbinary, as specified, available.
