LEXINGTON, Kent. - Wednesday is National Working Parents Day – a time to recognize and appreciate guardians who balance their work and home life.It’s a task that has been especially challenging during the coronavirus pandemic. Since the school year has started back up, many now have to juggle work while overseeing at-home learning.Michelle Martel, a professor and the director of clinical training for the University of Kentucky’s psychology department, says it’s OK for parents to feel overwhelmed and admit they need help at times.“If you have family or close friends in the area that could provide support, that’s a great place to start,” said Martel.Beyond that, if you haven’t already, Martel suggests reaching out to your employer to see how your job can be adjusted to fit into a new work-life balance.“Maybe it involves little different hours. Maybe it involves a little bit more flexibility,” she said. “I think presenting your boss with that idea, you know just, ‘Hey, I was thinking this might make things a little bit easier. Then I can get done what I need to get done, but also manage my kids and it might take the stress off everyone.’ I think most bosses really right now would welcome that.”Martel also says self-care is not selfish and that it’s important for parents to take moments for themselves during this challenging time.“Doing those things and not feeling bad about it, like ‘Oh, there’s a million things you could be doing right now,’ but maybe you just need to go take a hot bath or you need to just go out and take a walk or do something for you. LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Ohio nonprofit LakewoodAlive has apologized after a man dressed in a blackface Tiger Woods costume marched in the organization’s Spooky Pooch Parade. People on social media have called the costume racist, disgusting and offensive.In a video posted to Facebook by LakewoodAlive that has since been removed, the unidentified man was seen wearing blackface makeup while dressed in Woods’ trademark red polo shirt and Nike hat. He was seen holding a frame with the words “Breaking News – Tiger’s Back,” and pushing a pet stroller outfitted with a mock putting green.By Monday morning, several users responded on the nonprofit's Facebook page condemning the man’s costume as well as the organization for allowing him to march in the parade.“You need to respond to the fact that a man in blackface marched in your parade,” Clara Masters said in a Facebook comment. “This is not okay and incredibly offensive.”“This racist costume should never have been allowed in the event,” wrote Alison Meredith. “The participant should have been stopped at registration, and when that failed should have been pulled from the parade at whatever point an organizer saw it, even at the risk of 'causing a scene'. The tepid response and shrugging off of responsibility are making a terrible situation much worse. You allowed a blatant and disgusting display of racism in your event that was advertised as being for the community. LAKE ALFRED, Fla. -- A Polk County, Florida family is outraged after they say their 7-year-old was forced to scrub school floors with a toothbrush as punishment.The elementary student reportedly misbehaved last week at Lake Alfred Elementary, when her teacher sent the student next door for "corrective action."According to the family, the 7-year-old was told to scrub the floors with a toothbrush.They also claim teachers told her to clean the entire floor, and when she was done she was told to then clean the counters.Family members say she was forced to do this throughout the day and was not able to participate in regular classroom activities. The family says they were not made aware of the misbehavior or the punishment their daughter received. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) – Two people were found dead and two others were taken to the hospital after a fire tore through a La Jolla home early Monday morning.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said the fire was reported at around 3:45 a.m. at a home in the 2500 block of Caminito La Paz, near La Jolla Parkway.Responding firefighters worked to douse the two-alarm blaze but the flames completely destroyed the home’s second floor.A fire official at the scene told ABC 10News the roof was “gone” after the home essentially “closed in.” By 6 a.m., crews were able to enter the home’s first floor through a side entrance.As flames engulfed the house, a man and his daughter were able to escape. The man suffered unspecified burn-related injuries and was taken to the hospital. The injured man's daughter accompanied him to the hospital, but there is no word on if she sustained any injuries.Two people were unaccounted for after the fire erupted. A family member told ABC 10News the two missing people were an 80-year-old grandfather and the injured man's other daughter, who had autism and was non-verbal.At around 9 a.m., firefighters inside the home recovered two bodies presumed to be the two missing people.Neighbor Pat Nissan, who lives on the same street, was concerned after learning two people were missing.“There was screaming and yelling. I started hearing glass breaking,” Nissan told ABC 10News.Family members said the home was occupied by the man, grandfather, and the man’s two daughters.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 1561
