BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China on Tuesday urged courts across the country to accept scrutiny by the press and general public.The courts must constantly listen to the public so they can carry out their work in a better way, Shen Deyong, executive vice president of the SPC, told a national conference on the publicity work of courts.After hailing achievements of the courts in providing information to the public, Shen said some courts did not pay enough attention to public opinion."The public are paying more attention to court work, their expectations are growing. They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority.The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.

QINGDAO, Aug.19 (Xinhua) - China's largest marine patrol departed Thursday from Qingdao to Vladivostok, a coastal city in east Russia, participating in a multilateral joint drill.The joint drill is to be held from Aug.22 to 27, with the theme of "enforcing emergency responses to illegal actions threatening joint marine security".The North Pacific Coast Guard Agencies Forum (NPCGF) promoted the multilateral joint drill in 2009.Current members of NPCGF, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States, participate in the drill."The joint drill mainly focuses on arms trafficking and illegal migration, including searching, boarding and examining suspicious ships," said Wu Shaojun, captain of Marine Patrol 11.Chinese Marine Patrol 11, Marine Surveillance 83 and helicopters and ships from other countries will participate in the joint drill, said Wu.Chinese Marine Surveillance 83 left for Russia on Aug.13 from Guangzhou, capital city of south China's Guangdong Province.NPCGF, initiated by the Japan Coast Guard in 2000, is an organization devoted to fostering multilateral cooperation on illegal drug trafficking, maritime security, fisheries enforcement, illegal migration and heightened maritime awareness.Member states take turns hosting the annual forum. China joined the forum in 2004.The 3000-tonne Marine Patrol 11, China's largest patrol ship, is 114 meters long and equipped with high-speed rescue boats and a helicopter hangar. TAIPEI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The economic authority of Taiwan has approved investment totaling 77.13 million U.S. dollars from the Chinese mainland, according to a statistics report released Monday.From the end of June last year when Taiwan opened to mainland investment, the authority had approved 52 investment projects on the island by the end of May, said the report from the authority.The top three industries for mainland investment -- accounting for 44.84 percent of the total mainland investment -- were computers, electronics and optical products manufacturing.At the same time, the mainland saw a sharp increase in investment from Taiwan. In the first five months of this year, the Taiwan authority approved investments in 187 projects on the mainland.New investment from Taiwan on the mainland from January to May totalled 4.59 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 239.9 percent.About 75 percent of the Taiwan investment in the first five months went to Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian and Shandong provinces, said the report.
