She said social media will tailor what you see to who and what you interact with, so a good tool can be getting off apps and going straight to the source. She said to try googling stories to see diverse coverage of the subject and other related stories. She said a tool to tell if an informational post is true is to see if there is a link to more information. If someone just posts a picture or screenshot with facts or information, ask for more. “Hey do you have a link that adds or provides more information? Because the county is not going to post this jpeg image online. There’s going to be a link on a website, it’s going to link back where there’s more information,” she said. She also reminds that social media companies can filter content. She said they each have different policies on how and what they filter. “People say ‘oh it’s my First Amendment right to publish anything I want on these platforms.’ Remember the First Amendment applies to the government censorship of your opinion. It does not apply to businesses, if a business wants to decide to take something down, they can, that is their private platform,” she said. While news outlets and social media platforms are responsible for being accurate, she also pointed out that in an era of sharing posts, people also need to hold themselves accountable.“The third group that has responsibility in misinformation and things spreading, it’s the public. San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Sewage contaminated water is keeping swimmers out of the ocean in Imperial Beach. Late Tuesday afternoon, The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health extended an existing water contact closure to include all of Imperial Beach. The original closure was issued on June 27th for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline. According to the county, sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary. Eric Syverson is a life long resident of Imperial Beach. He keeps a close eye on what's happening in the Tijuana River Valley. "It was dry on Saturday, not dry on Sunday. Monday, we wondered what was going on and now, Tuesday, there was quite a bit of flow this morning and it just smelled horrible and it’s green,” said Syverson. The water was pooling under the bridge on the north side of Dairy Mart Road. "At six a.m. this morning, probably double the volume that’s flowing right now and the air was twice as bad, you couldn’t breath under this bridge this morning," said Syverson. According to a San Diego inspector with the International Boundary and Water Commission, there was transboundary flow Monday night into Tuesday morning from a ruptured potable water line. The IBWC estimates 300,000 gallons of treated and untreated wastewater flowed into the U.S. Initially, the IBWC said the figure was much higher; roughly two million gallons. The number was revised after the inspector determined their gauging station was not accurately recording the flows. Members of Citizens Against Sewage are skeptical. "I’m looking at the gauge data from the river gauge from IBWC's information. We put values on those numbers that they provide, and it’s over seven milllion gallons,” said Lance Rodgers, Co-Founder of Citizens Against Sewage. This is just the latest in a series of sewage spills that have closed South County beaches."There were flows on the second, there were flows on the 30th, the 28th, 24, 23, 20, 19 it’s been a bad month,” said Syverson. Syverson said it's the same problem with no solutions from either side of the border. "I mean, why should we even have to think about it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- While indoor dining at restaurants across San Diego County will be banned for at least three weeks starting Tuesday, outdoor dining can continue.Outdoor dining will be permitted until 10 p.m. and take out, delivery and drive-thru are still allowed.San Diego landed on California’s watchlist as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, prompting the latest restrictions.Museums, movie theaters, cardrooms, and family entertainment centers must also restrict indoor activities.Poway Mayor Steve Vaus hopes to make the situation a little easier to manage for Poway restaurant owners.RELATED: San Diego to close some businesses as COVID-19 cases spike“With the state and the county restricting indoor dining for three weeks, I wanted to make sure to provide a lifeline,” he said. “We could buy some picnic tables, put them in parking lots and adjacent areas as long as they need them, and then we can repurpose them in the parks.”His proposal will head to Poway city council for approval on Tuesday night.“I suspect that the council is going to approve this unanimously,” he said.Vaus said the tables would be paid for through the CARES Act, and business owners would not have to pay a fee to use them.“Absolutely free,” he said. “We’re trying to make life easier. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Federal wildlife officials were urged Wednesday to withdraw a proposal to drop 1.5 tons of rat poison on remote islands off the coast of California to kill a mice infestation until it addresses questions on the impact to wildlife.The California Coastal Commission heard public comment on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan, which has drawn criticism from local conservation groups. The commission is seeking to determine whether the plan complies with state coastal management rules.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a report presented to the commission in March that a massive house mice population is threatening the whole ecosystem on the rugged Farallon Islands, 27 miles (44 kilometers) off the coast of San Francisco.The archipelago is home to the largest seabird breeding colony in the contiguous United States, with approximately 300,000 to 350,000 birds of 13 species, including the rare ashy storm petrels. The islands are also used by marine mammal species for resting and breeding and by migratory birds.Federal wildlife officials proposed using helicopters to dump 2,900 pounds (1,315 kilograms) of cereal grain pellets laced with brodifacoum, an anticoagulant that causes rodents to bleed to death, which is banned in California.Officials acknowledged the plan will kill some seagulls and other species but argue that the benefits of eliminating the invasive species will heal the whole ecosystem."The only way to protect these species and allow the ecosystem to recover is 100% eradication of the mice," said Pete Warzibok, a biologist who has worked on the Farallon Islands for more than 20 years. "Anything else is simply a stopgap measure that will not adequately address the problem."Critics argued the poison will not only kill the mice, first introduced by ships that stopped in the islands 200 years ago, but also wildlife on the island and scavengers that would feed on the carcasses of the poisoned animals."These poisons are deadly, they persist in the environment for hundreds of days and they do kill animals," said Alison Hermance, the spokeswoman for the conservation group WildCare."The situation on the Farallon Islands has existed for decades. It does not need to be solved overnight with a massive poison drop," she said.The commission has no power to veto the plan but before federal officials can proceed, their plan needs approval from the various state and federal agencies.After a nearly two-hour hearing, commissioners said they still have questions on the impact to seabirds and other species. "We haven't been convinced that this is the best and only way to go," Commission Chair Dayna Bochco said.The commissioners asked federal officials to withdraw the proposal and resubmit it after their questions have been answered.The project would be implemented in the November-December time period when the mouse population is declining and food stressed, and would occur no sooner than late 2020. 2975
