Shooters in three different mass killings this year have posted manifestos on a little-known website where extremists gather to cheer on and recruit others. The 8Chan website has been down and then back online repeatedly since the mass killings in El Paso Saturday. A growing number of people studying mass shootings say homegrown extremists are organizing and recruiting like the way well-known terror groups such as ISIS or Al Qaeda have done, and they are using the 8Chan website to do it. Robert Evans doesn’t give off the look of someone who has studied extremists academically. The day he met us, he was dressed like a world traveler, wearing a TV, vest, jeans and boots. “I study how terrorist groups use the Internet to radicalize and recruit," Evans told investigative reporter Jace Larson during an interview Monday in Mexico City. Ten days ago, Evans was in Syria. He traveled to study extremist groups in Mosel, Iraq in 2016 and 2017. Since a shooter went on a rampage in March, killing 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, Evans has devoted much of his time to studying how three mass-shootings were connected to the 8Chan website. “8Chan went from a bunch of disaffected, misogynist videogame fans to outright neo-Nazis,” Evans said. The site started after users were booted from a similar, but slightly more regulated website called 4Chan, an image-based online bulletin board where users post and discuss images. 8Chan was developed as a place where any speech is allowed. Evans showed how users freely post violence, anti-Semitic themes and race-related extreme views. Pro-white nationalism images are easily found. Robert was among the first to find a connection between 8Chan and three 2019 mass killings: the Christchurch massacre in March, the Poway synagogue shooting outside San Diego in April that injured three and killed one, and the shooting in El Paso that killed 22 Saturday. The killers appeared to have left manifestos in each case on the 8Chan website before the killings. Killing on 8Chan is sometimes likened to a video game. The phrase “beating his high score” is used to refer to anyone who can kill more than a previous killer. As evidence of this phenomenon, Evans points out that the Christchurch killer livestreamed his bloodbath with a first-person point of view from a helmet cam. “There's a reason that the Christchurch shooter livestreamed his massacre for the people at 8Chan, and there's a reason that he put together a music list that was full of songs that were like related to in jokes within that community,” Evan said. On the site, readers also talk about something called “replacement theory,” which is also referred to as “white replacement theory.” Some express a concern that the white race could be eliminated as more people immigrate from Mexico, other central American counties and elsewhere. “It's this idea that white people are going extinct because of immigration,” Evans said. He pointed out that he believes the theory is false. USERS LOOK TO TWEETS FOR VALIDATION The views of many on the site would have been considered in the past, even by users, as extreme and not shared by the public. Evans now says he’s seen evidence website users feel legitimized by recent tweets from politicians. A family in Chicago made medical decisions and then funeral arrangements for a man they thought was their brother — only to find the man was a stranger.Rosie Brooks told CNN affiliate WBBM she got a call on May 13 that her brother, Alfonso Bennett, was in the ICU at a local hospital. Brooks rushed to the hospital with her sister, Brenda Bennett-Johnson, to see her brother.“They had him on a ventilator and they had a tube in his mouth,” Brooks said.Brooks said her brother was rarely in touch with the rest of the family, so when he turned up in the hospital it was shocking, but it wasn’t a complete surprise.According to WBBM, the sisters told the nurses at the hospital that they couldn’t identify the man because he had been badly beaten, especially in the face."They kept saying, 'CPD identified this person as our brother," Brooks said.Bennett-Johnson said a nurse told her police identified their brother through mugshots and not fingerprints because of budget cuts."You don't identify a person through a mugshot, versus fingerprints. Fingerprints carry everything," she said.The sisters say the man responded to commands by raising his hand, but never opened his eyes.Eventually, the sisters signed papers to take the man off a ventilator and gave doctors permission to perform a tracheotomy. The man went into hospice and later died.The sisters purchased a casket, a suit and made funeral arrangements for the unknown man, thinking it was their brother.Then, they got a phone call from one of their other sisters."She called my sister Yolanda to say, 'It's a miracle! It's a miracle!,” Bennet-Johnson said. "She said ‘Brenda! Brenda! It's Alfonso! It's Alfonso! It's Alfonso.’ I said, 'You're kidding!' I almost had a heart attack."Their brother was alive and well."It's sad it happened like that,” Bennett-Johnson said. “If it was our brother and we had to go through that, that would have been a different thing. But we made all kinds of decisions on someone that wasn't our family."The sisters told WBBM that the man they had been caring for was later identified at the morgue by his fingerprints and police are now looking for his relatives.A spokesperson for the hospital says the family did positively identify the man.Police say they do not usually take fingerprints unless someone commits a crime or when they go to the morgue for identification. 2379

A 4-year-old girl and four family members are recovering after a bobcat attack on Mt. Graham. Two campgrounds are closed with Arizona Game and Fish trying to catch and kill the cat they suspect has rabies. Has more on what officials are calling an extreme and bizarre animal attack. Game and Fish says they won't know for sure until they catch and test the animal, but this is simply not the behavior of a healthy bobcat. They say it needs to be destroyed. “The behavior is extreme by any reasonable standard. This is not someone coming across a bobcat and quickly being bit and the bobcat running off, this is sustained attacks on human beings,” said Arizona Game and Fish Spokesperson Mark Hart. The Family camping on Mt. Graham survived a traumatic experience Sunday. “A year-old girl ran behind the tent, her mother heard screaming, and they came around the tent to see she was being attacked by a bobcat, on the ground bitten at least once in the head.”The girl's father, two uncles, and a teenage girl came to her aid and the bobcat attacked them too. Hart says mountain lions can target children, but a healthy bobcat never would. “A bobcat is going to be more interested in an antelope squirrel or a rodent, not a human being it’s too big, the child was bigger than the bobcat.”The girl was treated for rabies exposure at a nearby hospital. Her family needed to go to two other hospitals to get the vaccine. All have been released. “Once symptoms onset rabies is almost always fatal. If you are exhibiting symptoms the vaccine won't work but if you get it before symptoms onset your life will be saved.”Shannon and Snow Flat campgrounds have been closed to the public. “We are on scene today setting traps and using predator calls in an attempt to lure the bobcat in, it has to be destroyed.”Hart says rabies are more common in foxes, bats, and skunks but the disease can be spread to other animals. He says to stay away from dead animal remains because it can be passed that way also. 2006
