BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- "I can't afford an apartment, a car or a wife, but it never occurred to me until now that I can't even afford vegetables or fruit," said Gao Lei, a 30-year-old renter in Beijing."I went to a grocery store yesterday only to find that even apples, the cheapest fruit, are sold for 4 yuan half a kilogram, doubling the price from two months ago," said Gao.China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. The hike was mainly due to a 10.1-percent surge in food prices. Food prices have a one-third weighting in China's CPI calculation. An employee puts bags of sugar on to shelves at a supermarket in Beijing. The price of the commodity has doubled in China since the beginning of the year. Though Gao is slightly exaggerating his hardship during the current inflation, price rises, particularly of life necessities such as grains and vegetables, do force Chinese low-income groups into a rough time.Jiang Peng's family is hard-hit, as he and his wife both are laid-off workers and have two daughters in college. Jiang, however, has a new job, working as a janitor in Jinan-based Shandong Economic University.Jiang's family makes some 24,000 yuan (3,600 U.S. dollars) a year, half of which goes to paying tuition for their two college girls, with the majority of the rest covering their daughters' living expenses."We spend each penny carefully, because we try to save as much as possible for the kids. Now as price goes up, we find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet," said Jiang. The only vegetable Jiang and his wife have these days is cabbage, since it is the cheapest of all vegetables.Jiang said prices have dropped slightly due to government price control efforts, but it is not making a big difference yet, and prices of some daily necessities remain high, not showing signs of a decrease."We have fried dough sticks for breakfast, and even its price rose from 3.5 yuan per half a kilogram to 4 yuan, never falling again," said Jiang. For the poorest families, the government already made decisions to dole out temporary subsidies to help them cope with rising living costs.Jin Hong, mother of a fifth-grader in the city of Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province, now has to pay 15 percent more for her son's lunch at school. Jin's household monthly income stands at less than 1,000 yuan."I hope there will be no more increases, otherwise I will not be able to afford the school meals for my son," said Jin.p Jin's family is entitled to a 100 yuan subsidy given by the local government, which is due on Dec. 10. "Now, we are counting on the subsidy," she said.Students from poor families are also feeling the pinch, and they are paid great attention in the Chinese government's ongoing price control efforts. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) issued a statement on Nov. 23 detailing various measures to institute price controls, including keeping prices stable in student cafeterias. Also, an earlier statement issued by the State Council, China's Cabinet, ordered local governments to offer subsidies to student canteens and increase allowances for poor students. He Ming, a student from a low-income family at Nanjing-based Southeast University, now sneaks out of classes earlier to make it to the cafeteria before all low-priced dishes are sold out.Low priced dishes are the vegetables, since meat is usually more expensive in China, and they are priced at one yuan per dish."In order not to only swallow rice for the meal, I have to quit part of the class. Though the cafeteria still serves low-price dishes, despite price hikes of vegetables lately, they serve less."He has a monthly living allowance of 300 yuan, which is given by his parents.

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The outcome of the UN climate change conference in Cancun sent "positive" signals to the international community, the Chinese delegation said Saturday.Conference delegates finally reached a deal to fight global warming early Saturday after an all-night session, overruling an objection from Bolivia."As for the outcome of this conference, first of all, it adheres to the (UN) Convention (on climate change), the Kyoto Protocol and the Bali Roadmap, as well as the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, which ensures that next year's negotiation will continue along the two tracks decided by the Bali Roadmap," the Chinese delegation said in a statement."Second, progress has been made at different levels in the areas where developing countries have concerns, such as adaptation, technology transfer, finance and capacity building, and the negotiation process will move on, which sends positive signals to the international community," the delegation said.It said the conference failed to conclude the negotiation of the Bali Roadmap and this indicated next year's negotiation task would be "extremely difficult."The delegation expected all parties to display strong political will and conclude the negotiation on the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol at the next conference, to be held in Durban, South Africa. In particular, that conference should establish effective mechanisms for finance, technology transfer and adaptation to support developing countries' efforts in addressing climate change, successfully conclude the negotiation in accordance with the mandate of the Bali Roadmap and make a big step forward in the international cooperation in combating climate change.China would continue to make positive efforts towards this end, the delegation said. The delegation reaffirmed that the Chinese government would hold a highly responsible attitude toward the Chinese people and people in the world, and remain committed to promoting green, low-carbon and sustainable development as its contribution to combating climate change. The Chinese delegation also hailed the efforts of the Mexican government and its people during the negotiations and their hospitality. It also appreciated the positive role of the Secretariat of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. The two-week long talks in Cancun to set new targets and find new ways to combat climate change attracted 25,000 government officials, businessmen and researchers from over 190 countries.

WUHAN, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China is building museums and shooting a blockbuster movie in honor of the 1911 Revolution, whose centenary will be celebrated this year on both sides of the Strait. Also known as the Xinhai Revolution, the uprising in 1911 was remembered for creating the Republic of China, the first republic in the Asian history. Its spiritual leader, Sun Yat-sen, was also the founder of the Kuomintang (KMT).The Republic of China, however, ended its rule after the KMT was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and retreated to Taiwan in 1949.Both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have promised a grand celebration of the revolution's 100-year anniversary, which will fall on October 10 this year.On the mainland, an epic movie depicting the revolution will hit the screen in September to recall the event.Named Xinhai Revolution, the movie stars over 70 leading Chinese actors and actresses, including Jackie Chan, Li Bingbing, and Winston Chao.It is another blockbuster China has made to present landmark revolutions. The previous film was Founding of a Republic, which hailed the 60th anniversary of the birth of the People's Republic of China in 2009.Apart from encouraging people to attend the cinema, many Chinese cities are also arranging exhibitions featuring the revolution. In the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the revolution began, a new museum, the 1911 Revolution Museum, will be opened on the eve of the centenary. The city has also mounted a global search for lost materials and artifacts related to the revolution, said He Xiaoxu, the chief of Wuhan Bureau of Culture."The city government will assist in the work of gathering materials for the museum and fund the purchases," said He.So far, the museum has received 40 pieces of artifacts retrieved by purchases and 70 by donations, including three from Taiwan. The three artifacts, including one photograph and two calligraphies by revolutionary figures, were contributed by the leader of a Taiwan-based exchange promotion organization.Yang Yi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the Chinese mainland supported a joint celebration of the anniversary with Taiwan."The commemoration of the revolution will help unite people across the Strait in achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," said Yang.
