SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant destroyed by a fatal fire last October reopened just in time for the holiday crowds. Kojack's Greek American fusion restaurant has been a Mission Beach staple for more than three decades. But last October, a fire started near the roof of the building and destroyed the ice cream shop and Kojack's on the bottom floor, as well as the apartment rooms on the second floor. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said 36-year-old apartment tenant, Aaron Porter died in the fire. Since the tragedy, the building and restaurant owner, Mike Soltan says he has worked tirelessly to get back onto his feet to reopen on his favorite holiday. "I never miss the Fourth of July on this beach for 33 years. So we tried so hard to make it, and finally, we did it." Soltan said. Longtime customer, Steve Grebing said he could not miss the grand reopening. "He [Soltan] kept saying in two weeks, two weeks. He was getting there, but now he is back here, so it's great," Grebing said. While the building itself is rebuilt, the renovations for the second floor are on hold. So no apartment tenants are able to live upstairs. Soltan also owns the ice cream shop next to Kojack's. Both shops reopened on July 4. 1226

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing number of young San Diegans are still having symptoms several weeks or months after getting COVID-19. At UC San Diego, doctors are tracking and treating these so called long-haulers. Some health experts are now saying that the long-haul patient population may become a public health crisis of its own.When Jennica Harris in San Marcos got the coronavirus in March, she expected to bounce right back. Yet, weeks turned into months. “I'm 33 and healthy and young. [I work] out. [I] worked out while I was pregnant [with] lifting weights. High intensity workouts and here I am [with] this slew of doctors that I have to go see and try to figure out why my [heart rate] is so high. I can’t move from the couch and I can’t breathe two months after, three months, and four months after [getting COVID-19],” she told ABC10 News on Tuesday.Nine months after testing positive, the mother of two still battles severe shortness of breath. She's considered a long-hauler, one of the growing number of post-COVID-19 patients who suffer long after testing positive. “I was so angry for so long because I would see people outside partying when I could barely walk two feet to my window,” she added.“We already have several dozen patients and we're starting to get in outside referrals,” said UC San Diego’s Dr. Lucy Horton on Tuesday. She’s working with a team of specialists to treat local long-haulers. Many are in their 20s, 30s and 40s with no underlying conditions and many were never sick enough to be hospitalized when they first got the virus.Dr. Horton told ABC10 News that the cause of ongoing symptoms remains unclear. She said that it could be an auto-immune or overactive inflammatory response but there’s no one treatment available. She added that many of her patients have been ill for months. “What's really challenging as a physician in this situation is that we honestly don't know so when patients ask me, ‘Am I going to be sick for the rest of my life?’ I don't know if they’re going to be sick for the rest of their life,” she told ABC10 News.Dr. Horton and Harris encourage young people to continue taking virus safety measures seriously. “I just say that the decisions you make, make sure that you can live with those decisions,” added Harris. 2288

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A jury returned several guilty verdicts Friday against a La Jolla restaurant owner accused of raping eight women who he either drugged or knew were too intoxicated to consent to sex.Jurors found 61-year-old Daniel Dorado guilty of 20 counts in connection with alleged rapes that happened in 2009, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Some of the counts Doroado was found guilty of include two counts of rape of an unconscious person; two counts of rape of an intoxicated person; two counts of assault with intent to commit rape, sodomy oral copulation or sexual penetration of an unconscious or intoxicated person; two counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person with an unknown object; and two counts of sexual penetration of an intoxicated person with an unknown object.Dorado had faced 35 felony counts. The jury acquitted him on three counts, deadlocked on six counts, and have not yet reached verdicts on six remaining counts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new program promises to help San Diegans get high-paying tech jobs without the crippling student loan debt.It's through a partnership between the San Diego Workforce Partnership and UC San Diego Extension, offering students what's called an income share agreement (ISA). With the ISA, tuition is covered and students agree to pay a small proportion of their income for a set period of time after graduating.“If the program doesn’t work for you and you don’t get a high paying job, you pay nothing. If it works, you pay a small percentage of your income back into the fund. And that fund, you pay it forward to the next cohort of people coming behind you," said Andy Hall, Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership.RELATED: Realtors expect busy spring for buyers and sellersThe programs include front-end web development, Java programming, business intelligence, or digital marketing; each costs ,500.“The ranges are you pay nothing if you’re making under ,000, if you're making over that, you'll pay between 5 and 8 percent of your income, and then you'll never pay more than about 1.6 to 1.8 of what was initially financed for you," said Hall.The program is possible thanks to million in grant funding, with Strada Education Network providing an initial .2 million. Strada granted the money to the Workforce to increase access and diversity in tech through ISAs.Dr. Josh Shapiro, UC San Diego Extension Assistant Dean of Research Affairs, says the university wants to extend its reach into the community.“Assuring everyone has access to a world-class education, regardless of where they live, their means, their socioeconomic status," said Shapiro. He says the ISA model is one which could be used for undergraduate programs in the UC System down the line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A neighbor says San Diego Police were called to the home of YouTube personality McSkillet, whose real name was Trevor Heitmann, the morning of the deadly freeway crash.According to the CHP, the 18-year-old was in his McLaren sports car when he drove south in the northbound lanes of the 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday just before 5 p.m. He collided head on with an SUV. Both cars burst into flames.Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana were killed instantly. Heitmann also died following the crash.A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, says she's known the family roughly 15 years,"He was a normal kid, we went to elementary school with him and everything was totally normal," the neighbor said. "He went off to La Jolla Country Day from then on I mainly saw him playing basketball with a couple of guys in the street, " she said.She said once Heitmann started getting into online video games, he stopped playing basketball outside.The neighbor said she saw police at the family's Carmel Valley home Thursday morning just hours before the fatal crash."There were probably three police cars, I would guess five officers and they were talking to his mother out in the driveway," she said.She also noticed an SUV blocking the family's driveway. Heitmann's McLaren sportscar was in the garage and the door was open."Now it makes sense. It was actually blocking the McLaren that was sitting inside the garage," she said.Later that afternoon, she said her husband heard a crash."He saw the McLaren zoom away and then it was a little while later that we had the news on and saw that there was a horrific accident," she said.Shortly after, she said she saw a CHP officer talking to Heitmann's dad.She says that's when she learned from the boy's father that the family had been worried about the 18-year-old's behavior."He told me five days earlier, that Trevor had just snapped, that was the word he used. He started making threats, or started saying he was driving at high speed, down the wrong side of the street and through red lights and he said that's what prompted him to come to San Diego," said the neighbor, who added that the boy's parents were divorced and his dad lived in Colorado.She said the teenager's dad also shared with her that his son hit the SUV that was blocking the driveway and nearly hit him."He said he almost hit me. This was him going back to the context of saying he had just snapped. And I said, 'you mean hit you as a person,' and he said, 'yeah I was standing out here because we were supposed to go to a psychiatrist,'" she said.San Diego Police have not confirmed that officers were called to the family's home that morning. These people were obviously very concerned to the degree that they called the police, especially in the face, they are very private people," she said.Clinical Psychologist Michelle Marie Carcel said forcing a kid who is over 18 to get psychiatric help can be complicated. She said parents need to be clear when calling 911 that they think their child is a danger to themselves or others."The most important thing is to really stress that in the call. I am concerned that my child is going to hurt themselves or hurt someone else, that kind of urgency really triggers that response from the officers," said Carcel.We don't know the circumstances of the call that day or if officers had contact with the 18-year-old. 3930
