Scrap metal thieves are becoming so brazen, they're now now taking parts off of gas grills at Walmart in the middle of the shopping day, according to Cleveland's Environmental Crimes Task Force.Sgt. Andrew Ezzo said the crooks took nearly 100 pounds in valves and other parts from display gas grills at the Walmart located on Brookpark Road in Cleveland."The only way they found out is because they sold a couple of display models, and people had to bring them back and said, 'Where's our parts?'" said Ezzo. "They think they can take whatever they want. They think they're entitled to it."Ezzo said his task force has reported a series of thefts at major companies in all parts of the city. Two thieves were caught on surveillance video at Menyhart Plumbing on Lorain Road stealing thousands of pounds in antique home heating radiators. Owner Peter Menyhart said the task force used his surveillance video and its relationship with area scrap yards to make an arrest in less than a day."Basically anything those two guys could physically carry, they carried out of here," Menyhart said. "They didn't have any money, so they're like, 'Hey, lets go steal some scrap, and we could go drop it off at 7 a.m. at the scrap yard and get some cash.'"The scrap yard involved reported the stolen items, and police found suspects in just a few hours.Ezzo said his task force is in a battle, but the efforts of his team have reduced the number of thefts so far in 2018."In 2014, 2015 and 2016, the State of Ohio led the nation in scrap theft," Ezzo said. "The deal that we make with the scrap yards is if I find the victim, the victim is going to pay you whatever you paid for it, that way the scrap yard is not out the money."Menyhart said his company will add additional security cameras. He had nothing but praise for Ezzo and his team."He said, 'I'm going to put out a bulletin. I'm going to catch these guys before the day is out.' (KGTV) -- San Marcos Unified School District teachers and parents flooded the school board meeting Tuesday night asking for the board to come to a contract agreement with their union. The meeting was standing room only. Union officials say they've been without a contract since last June and that they've tried to negotiate with the district. They're fighting for higher pay and smaller class sizes and getting all of these things in writing. There was no item on the agenda at Tuesday's meeting but the superintendent did address the teachers and parents directly during a presentation. Dr. Garcia told the crowd she hears them and appreciates them being present at the meeting but told them the issue with the union's request is a lack of adequate funding at the state level. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California confirmed Thursday it is investigating a graduate student’s allegations that a UC regent touched her upper thigh during a dinner five years ago.Doctoral student Rebecca Ora made the claim during a public UC regents meeting Wednesday, saying Regent George Kieffer inappropriately touched her during a 2014 dinner.“This persisted throughout the evening,” Rebecca Ora said into the microphone. She said she felt “powerless to stop this figure of authority from putting his hands on my body. SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fast-moving fire broke out in the mountains near Santa Barbara late Monday afternoon. According to KEYT, the blaze, named the Cave Fire, sparked around 4:15 p.m. along Highway 154 and East Camino Cielo. By 5 p.m., the fire had burned 15 acres. That number quickly grew to 2,500 acres by 7:54 p.m., The Tribune reports. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A local portable toilet rental company is charged with tampering with equipment on its trucks to skirt emissions regulations. Employees also allegedly faked some of the smog test results.Team 10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner went to San Marcos’ Diamond Environmental Services on Friday afternoon, but was asked to leave. 10News was looking for answers to the alarming accusations that the company and some of its employees were committing crimes against the environment. Part of a video on the company’s website states, “Diamond's dedication to doing the right thing goes above and beyond.” Yet prosecutors say Diamond was preparing false smog test results to get passing results. Additionally, executives were allegedly tampering with emission control devices on its diesel truck fleet, re-programming the emission monitoring devices to avoid extra costs that come with burning off dirty, soot-filled diesel filters. Ed Rodriguez is the owner of Auto Park Smog in Escondido. He says, “If you’ve ever seen a vehicle going down the road, like a truck, and it has black smoke coming out of it, that’s all soot and that's not good.” Rodriguez says he's worked on Diamond's smaller trucks but not the ones that are part of this new six count federal indictment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims that Diamond took the devices out of trucks and shipped them out of California to be re-programmed.
