SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On a clear, sunny day in February, the sound of a bell announces the arrival of Naval Commander John C. Witte as he boards the USS Annapolis. He's in charge of the roughly 160 sailors who serve aboard the submarine, one of several boats stationed at Naval Base Point Loma."Submarining takes a lot of mental toughness and these guys will work long hours but they'll do what it takes to get the mission done," Witte told 10News. As you can imagine space is limited on board, nearly every inch is utilized, especially in the command area. RELATED: Self-driving ship travels from San Diego to Hawaii with no one aboardOnce underwater it's the instruments that are crucial to navigation, especially sonar. But that's not to say the crew doesn't ever use their eyes. The periscope is still something the submarine crew utilizes regularly. "We may want to look at what other ships are doing we may want to try to observe other navy's activity stuff like that," Witte said. Everyone on board has a specialized skill, but because of the isolation that comes with being underwater for long periods of time, everyone has to take on multiple roles. When it's time to eat, the culinary specialists use the limited supply of ingredients to make every meal and also bake things like fresh bread and cookies pretty often. "We don't carry a lot of pre-made bread because it takes up too much room so a lot of our bread is made fresh a lot of our cookies are made fresh so its a pretty good," Witte explained. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing. The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together. The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. All 30 homes in that development will have a "Multi-Generational" suite.RELATED: Developer wants to build Multi-Generational housing in La MesaDias says they held a couple of community meetings during the planning stages. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. "Now people in America are starting to embrace it."The homes are pricey. Models in Lennar's Sterling Heights development run between .7 and million. But Ostrem says it can help families save money by not having multiple mortgages or rent payments across the city.RELATED: California ranked last for family housing affordability He adds that City laws and HOA rules will help keep the extra suites from turning into rental properties or vacation rental units.Model homes are already open at La Mesa Summit Estates. The Phair Company hopes to begin construction this summer and have homes ready by 2020. 2309

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Diego has a new challenge that promotes bike riding, exploring the community and supporting local businesses. The Better by Bike blog is website that features everything from bike routes, to bike repair tips, to features on local bike riders.Part of the new program is a scavenger hunt that takes riders through the mid-city area. It ends Aug. 30 and is a competition to see who can get the most points after visiting local businesses and answering questions. The challenges range from taking pictures of specific spots to describing murals painted by local artists. It uses the Scavify application. Winners will then be awarded prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants.Anisha Gianchandani is the Climate Advisor for the City of San Diego and said this is part of a bigger-picture project to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and make San Diego more livable.“So it’s really just a fun way to get outside safely, enjoy your neighborhood and support small local businesses,” she said, later adding that “when you slow down, you get to see so many parts of your neighborhood that you normally wouldn’t see in a car.”It also helps local businesses. Stores and restaurants had the chance to submit their locations to be part of the scavenger hunt, which brings foot traffic to the area.Juan Pablo Sanchez’s family owns Super Cocina, one of the stops on the scavenger hunt. They had a local artist paint a mural on their wall outside, and their question pertains to that art.“We want to encourage you to use these streets, to go through us, to see our culture, to see the people that live here,” said Sanchez.Rudy Vargas, a native to the City Heights area, has embraced the challenge, heading up the leaderboard. He said even though he is familiar with his home, he’s still learned new facts about his neighborhood.“It was a good way to revisit some of my favorite places in City Heights but also visit some places I didn’t even know existed,” said Vargas.Vargas said he first picked up a passion for riding bikes when commuting to SDSU as a student, and has since kept up the passion.“My hope is that we continue this culture change and we step away from our vehicles because like I said there’s no other feeling like it,” he said. 2286
