INDIANAPOLIS -- For the more than 100 supporters who crowded a second-floor meeting room – and overflowed into a ninth-floor ballroom – the United Methodist Church’s hearing in Indianapolis Friday about Rev. David Meredith was a referendum on their own place in the church.Meredith, an openly gay man who has served as the pastor of Clifton United Methodist Church in Cincinnati since 2012, was called to Indianapolis for a hearing before the UMC’s North Central Jurisdictional Committee on Appeals. At issue is whether his 2016 marriage to his partner of three decades, Jim Schlachter, disqualifies him from remaining as an ordained minister within the UMC.READ MORE | Gay United Methodist Church pastor to stand 'trial' in IndianapolisThe challenge was raised by a group of 11 UMC denomination members, including at least two fellow clergymen, shortly after Meredith and Shlachter’s wedding. In letters sent to the UMC’s West Ohio Conference, the objectors cited the denomination’s Book of Discipline, which states that homosexuality is “incompatible” with Christian teaching:“While persons set apart by the Church for ordained ministry are subject to all the frailties of the human condition and the pressures of society, they are required to maintain the highest standards of holy living in the world. The practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. Therefore self-avowed practicing homosexuals are not to be certified as candidates, ordained as ministers, or appointed to serve in The United Methodist Church.” 1550

Instead of planes, trains, automobiles, and hotels, more and more travelers are considering renting an RV for upcoming trips. After all, there is virtually no risk of contracting COVID-19 when you are sleeping and eating in your own home on wheels. But while it appears a great way to travel, you need to know the pros and cons before you rent a camper (that you pull) or motor home (that you drive). It's the vacation rage of 2020, according to Money magazine, which calls RV's "virus friendly," since you drive across the country with your own bedroom and kitchen. But Money says many people end up surprised at the total cost, which can total a lot more than you first think.Know the real costRV rental can range from 0 to 0 per night, similar to a hotel room.Campsites are another to as much as 0 a night, depending on location and amenities.Gas can cost to 0 per day, even with today's low gas prices, as most motor homes get just 5 to 10 miles per gallon.Your auto insurance may not cover the full value of that RV, and your credit card may not cover it at all. That means you may have to pay or more per day for RV insurance.Add it up and you can end up spending 0 - 0 per night, though it is still cheaper than a 0 a night luxury resort. One other downside: many rental RV's are budget models, without all the high-end amenities you see at RV shows. Tour the model first, before you rent.Pull-behind camper or motor home?Campers that you pull tend to rent for less than models you drive. But think twice about a pull-behind camper if you have never towed a vehicle before. You will need an SUV or pickup built for towing, with a tow package that includes brake light hookups. And if you have never towed anything, you could be in for a surprise when you try to back up.A small or mid-size motor home that you drive is usually best for first-timers, experts say.And you have your own COVID-free accommodations, which can be well worth the cost.Bottom line: Campers are a great way to travel safely during the pandemic. Interested? Check a major rental firm like Cruise America. Or rent directly from owners at RV Share.Just know all the costs involved, so you don't waste your money.___________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. It's not very often that Michael Phelps gets knocked off the record board. But a 10-year-old swimming phenom with a superhero name has done just that. His name is Clark Kent Apuada. And of course, they call him "Superman."Over the weekend, Clark, who swims for the Monterey County Aquatic Team, competed at the Far West International Championship in California, where he won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:09:38.That's more than a second better than the 100-meter butterfly record that Phelps set at the championship in 1995.It had gone unbroken, while Phelps went on to win 28 Olympic medals. 598
