The historic day will be marked with a parade, kids activities, park tours, butterfly and ladybug releases, and much more.Live performances are also planned at the park's Botanical Garden and Spreckels Organ Pavilion.In 1868, the City of San Diego moved to set aside 1,400 acres of land for the area then known as "City Park." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is launching two task forces after a 19-year-old died earlier this month after attending a fraternity event.Dylan Hernandez died Nov. 8 after falling out of the top bunk in his dorm.In the wake of the tragedy, SDSU suspended all 14 of its fraternities. On Wednesday, it announced the creation of two task forces to address student life and attack issues that may have led to Hernandez's death. About half of the 28 members are university employees and administrators, while about five are current students. Erik Johannesen, a chapter advisor for the Delta Sigma Phi, will participate in the task force on activities and safety. "Fraternities, when they're operating well, they're the great finishing school for every young man that joins one," said Johannesen, who graduated SDSU in 1981. "They're the ones that will tell you how they drink, and where the risk is, and they're the ones that have to buy in," said education attorney Bob Ottilie. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University will begin testing all students who live on campus for COVID-19, the school said Tuesday.According to the university, the testing will start on September 16. After the initial phase of testing, the school will begin testing students at random. “Following the initial phase of benchmark testing for all students in residence this week, we will then launch random testing for the on-campus housing population. During each round of testing, a set of individuals from each residential community group will be randomly sampled to be re-tested,” the school said.The news comes as 648 students tested positive or presumptive positive for the virus.According to SDSU, 644 students have so far tested positive for the virus. Four students are presumptive positive.So far, no faculty or staff have tested positive for coronavirus. 875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Since the deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida last month, the San Diego County District Attorney's office has seen 19 cases of local school threats.Nine juveniles so far have been charged criminally, according to District Attorney Summer Stephan."We can't assume that the threat is a joke," Stephan said.Stephan said that even though there is not an intent to carry out a school shooting, the person behind a social media threat could face a felony charge if they determine there is an intent to cause fear.Students could receive consequences ranging from custody time, community service, additional mental health services, restorative justice, or access to social media taken away ordered by a judge.San Diego County school threat timeline:"When they hear the judge mention taking their social media away, you can see their faces change over that," Stephan said. "It's important that parents and [the] community really talk to their kids."Stephan said investigators look at a number of factors when determining which cases rise to the level of charges."We have to look at do they have access to weapons? Have they acquired weapons recently? Have they visited websites that indicate a fascination with school shootings and violence?" Stephan said.Of the 19 cases, Stephan said eight cases "did not rise to the level" of criminal charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony.The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641
