BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Some 600,000 people visited graveyards in the suburbs of Chinese capital Beijing on Friday, about triple last year's figure of 189,000, according to official statistics.     On Dec. 16, the State Council (cabinet) revised the nation's official holiday schedule to add three traditional festivals -- Qingming, Duanwu and Zhongqiu -- in response to public calls. The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre received numerous domestic visitors -- and many from Japan.     "We, from the aggressor side of the war, want to show regret to the victims on this special day," said one of the Japanese visitors.     In December 1937, invading Japanese troops slaughtered 300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians in the city, which was then the national capital. Many of the bodies were never properly interred, and many of the Chinese visiting the memorial on Friday have no graves to visit.     Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province in east China, unveiled a monument ln honor of the thousands of firefighters died on duty since 1949. It is the first such monument in the country.

XIANYANG, Shaanxi, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao has written to the Tibet Nationalities Institute (TNI) to celebrate its 50th founding anniversary, which was the first institution of higher learning for ethnic Tibetans set up by the Central Government outside Tibet Autonomous Region.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, hailed the institute's "important contribution to the economic development and social progress" of Tibet, which has turned a great number of ethnic Tibetans into high-quality cadres and specialists.     Hu expressed the hope that the TNI would continuously improve its managerial level in teaching, play a better role as the training base for Tibetan cadres, and make greater contributions to improving the life of people of different ethnic groups in Tibet and promoting stability and unity in the region.     A ceremony was held on Sunday at the TNI in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, northwest China. Raidi, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, who is an ethnic Tibetan and a former leader of Tibet Autonomous Region, attended the celebration.

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday that China and the United States are not rivals but partners in cooperation and they should work together to further strengthen bilateral relations.     In a speech delivered at a luncheon co-hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and other friendly American organizations, Wen said China-U.S. relations have made significant progress since his first official visit to the United States in 2003.     High-level contacts between the two sides are more frequent than ever before, said Wen, who arrived here Tuesday to attend meetings at the headquarters of the United Nations.     "There are now over 60 dialogue and consultative mechanisms between our two countries. The Strategic Economic Dialogue and the Strategic Dialogue have in particular played an important part in increasing strategic mutual trust between the two sides."     On economic cooperation, Wen noted that China and the United States are now each other's second largest trading partners.     Dialogue and cooperation have also extended to a number of new areas, such as energy resources and climate change, he added.     In addition, China and the United States have maintained communication and coordination on global security issues such as counter-terrorism and non-proliferation and on regional and international hot-spot issues, the Chinese premier said.     The ever-deepening friendship between the two peoples is an integral part of growing relations between the two countries, Wen said.     He also expressed sincere appreciation to the American people from all walks of life for their abiding commitment to China-U.S. friendship and extended heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. government and people for their strong support for China's earthquake relief and efforts in hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.     As to the China-U.S. relations after the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Wen said China hopes to maintain and develop the constructive and cooperative relations with the United States whoever becomes the next U.S. president. China's hotel and catering industry saw its retail sales rose 24.3 percent in the first seven months over the same period last year, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said on Friday.The growth rate was 6.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year, said the MOC on its website.Retail sales of the country's hotel and catering industry amounted to 837.49 billion yuan (1.99 billion) between January and July, accounting for 14 percent of the nation's total domestic retail sales during the same period.China's retail sales of consumer goods in the first seven months of this year was 5.9672 trillion yuan, up 21.7 percent, compared with 15.5 percent growth rate recorded over the same period of last year.Foreign hotel and catering enterprises established 399 new branches in China during the January and July period, down 18.2 percent over the same period last year, while contract value rose 4.3 percent to .71 billion.The country's hotel and catering industry reaped 116.8 billion yuan in July alone, representing an increase of 26.5 percent over the same month last year, according to the MOC.
