I’ve done everything on my own, for me and my kids, so it's just like, it was hard for me to accept someone being nice to me," DeRemer said.McDaniel helps people fighting many battles, including one he knows all too well. He says he lost his dad and brother to cancer, while his sister is fighting the disease now.Then, there are those fighting battles few will ever understand. People like Cindy Zink.“I’m a 60-year-old woman who was just diagnosed with ALS and this might be my last winter,” she said.Zink doesn’t know how much time she has left.“That’s what God has for me, so I’m going to wake up every day and live that day that he gave me," she said.For however long she will be here, she’ll be warmed by the wood in her fireplace.“It’s a beautiful thing when people come over and it draws them right into the home," Zink expressed.Warmth, especially in the most trying of times, carries a meaning beyond just temperature and flame.“Those are the ones that make you say, you know what, we’re going keep doing this," McDaniel said. 2327

The Gwinnett County Police Department says it has fired an officer for violating policy in a now-viral arrest in which he used a stun gun on a Black woman.In a press release, the department said that it had fired Officer Michael Oxford on Friday, adding that he "violated our policy and did not meet our core values."The video, which has been viewed thousands of times on TikTok, showed Oxford using the stun gun on the woman as he attempted to take her into custody.According to a police report, the incident occurred on Aug. 18, when Oxford responded to a 911 call in Loganville, Georgia. The caller claimed that a woman had thrown a bottle at their home and threatened a 9-year-old child.Oxford then went to the suspect's residence and encountered a woman he recognized from surveillance footage.The Gwinnett Police Department says that people at the home immediately began yelling at Oxford when he approached. According to a police statement, Oxford "attempted to speak with her about the incident but was unable to do so because the defendant in this case, Kyndesia Smith, began yelling at him."That's when the now-viral video begins. It shows Oxford threaten to arrest Smith, 22, if she doesn't stop interrupting. He then attempted to place Smith under arrest and tried to grab her by the shoulders.Eventually, Oxford ordered Smith on the ground. After she didn't immediately comply, he used his stun gun on her. Oxford also claimed in his police report that Smith later tried to kick him as he placed her in a police cruiser.According to NBC News, Smith was charged with "simple battery against an officer and willful obstruction of law enforcement." The NCAA has announced Wednesday a series of major changes to college basketball in the hopes of eliminating corruption in the sport.The NCAA will now allow undergraduate students to participate in the NBA draft and return to school if they are not selected. Previously, players were allowed to attend the NBA combine but needed to withdraw 10 days prior to the draft in order to retain eligibility."Elite" high school prospects will now be permitted to be represented by an agent certified by the NCAA. According to CBS, USA Basketball will be tasked with choosing which prospects are considered "elite."The NCAA also announced major changes to the recruiting calendar, which the association hopes will allow recruits to attend more showcase events put on by high schools. Currently, apparel companies put on some of the most prestigious recruiting events.Finally, the NCAA will hold university presidents and chancellors personally accountable for their own athletics programs. The number of eligible Latino voters has never been as high as it is now. According to a Pew Research study 32 million Latinos could cast a ballot in this election. However, there is a sentiment among many Latino voters that their vote won’t make a difference. Dora Ramirez, of El Paso, Texas, tells me she is sick and tired of issues facing the Latino community not being addressed by politicians. “We bring money into the economy, we work in the economy. People would not have strawberries or lettuce or avocados if people did not go out and work, and yet they are dismissing us as if we are nothing," said Ramirez.In an effort to engage voters, volunteers were out at a local food pantry. Every person driving up for food is asked if they are registered to vote and if they know where to drop off their ballot. Many have described the Latino vote as a “sleeping giant." A Pew Research study is showing the “sleeping giant” could come to life during this election showing there are 5.6 million registered Latino voters in Texas, 7.9 million in California, 3.1 million in Florida, 2 million in New York and more than a million in Arizona. Latino voters in Texas could potentially turn it into a swing state.Beto O’Rourke and his team from Powered By The People are ramping up their efforts to get people to register to vote. O’Rourke says he has heard from many Latino voters that they don’t feel included by political parties and will not vote, but a group that he is seeing become quite active is the younger Latino community. “Those young people, I believe, are not only going to vote in record numbers, but they are getting their folks and their grandparents and the people in their lives to vote as well," said O’Rourke.Miranda Escobar Gregory is one of those young Latinos. At 20 years old, this will be her first time voting. “I know that I now have more of a voice than I did 2 years ago," said Escobar Gregory. Born and raised in El Paso, as a first-generation Mexican American she faces some unique challenges in adapting her own political believes and still respecting those of her conservative upbringing. “If we have a strong presence in this country, why are we not using our voice to represent us and letting other people do it for us," said Escobar Gregory.Escobar Gregory is one of the more than 3 million registered young Latino voters, a group many believe will show up in record numbers during this election. 2437
