IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif., (KGTV) — One week after San Diego County lifted the beach closure at the Imperial Beach Pier, many people are enjoying the waves. But parts of the coastline remain closed due to the Tijuana River runoff contamination. Nicolas Pasculli of Hillcrest, drove down specifically to Imperial Beach to avoid the weekend crowds.“We’ve had rain for such a long time. It’s nice to enjoy the sunshine and the fresh air," Pasculli said. We met him sunbathing on the sand, just south of Seacoast Drive. Compared to some of the other areas in the county, this beach was empty.“Maybe because the sign is up and it says to be careful, the water might be contaminated,” Pasculli said. Bright yellow signs are clearly posted at the entrance of the beach. Last week, San Diego County Environmental Health gave the green light for people to enjoy beaches north of the last house on Southeast Drive in Imperial Beach. But Pasculli was right in the middle of the 'Red zone,' where the county deemed unsafe due to Tijuana sewage contamination since last November. That did not seem to bother him. “The way I look at it, we’re pretty close to that last house, so I think we’re in a gray zone, so I’m not worried about it,” Pasculli said. Surfer Dane Crosby was not phased by the warnings either.“It’s a north swell today, so I know that the water is moving south," he said.The Imperial Beach resident already surfed the waters in the morning. He was at the beach again, walking his dog Dixie.“When it is dirty, you’ll get an essence of detergent, kind of like a peppery detergent smell,” Crosby said. But today, he did not smell anything. Neither did Pasculli. They are both confident that the winds and waves will filter away the contaminants.“I think sometimes people get over anxious about things because we’ve become such a germaphobe society,” Pasculli said. “The ocean is pretty active today, so I think it's going to clean itself out.” 1950

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance cameras captured a bizarre and dangerous accident in the South Bay. Darell Salondaguit has twelve surveillance cameras posted around his home at the corner of 15th Street and Imperial Beach Boulevard. He was taking a shower around eleven p.m. Monday when he heard a noise. "We heard a really big thud and thought it was cats in the backyard," said Salondaguit.When he woke up Tuesday morning, he discovered his wooden fence, potted plants, and palm tree were severely damaged. When he played back his cameras, he was shocked at what he saw. "Just a tire flying across from over there, crashing through here," described Salondaguit.The tire flew off of a car on Imperial Beach Boulevard, rolled across 15th Street and crashed through his fence. The cameras also show a man and a woman, casually step over the damaged fence, pick up the tire and leave."They had to come through the yard and get their tire, they didn't bother knocking or anything," said Salondaguit.He filed a report with the Sheriff's Department and hopes the people responsible will come forward."It was like really scary, cause I tend to check the plants at nighttime to see if they're properly watered because we have an automatic watering system. Well, if I was out here, I'd probably be seriously injured, or even dead, cause that thing was going really fast." 1388

HOUSTON - A social media influencer was found dead along the side of a road in Houston, a day after going missing, leaving many questions for friends and family. Alexis Sharkey’s friends are now telling media outlets she feared for her safety.Sharkey was found dead Saturday morning by Houston public works crews and was not wearing any clothes, according to local media. In 2135, NASA says an asteroid the size of the Empire State Building could slam into Earth.According to the Washington Post, scientists say, though the chance is small, the asteroid could slam into Earth on September 22, 2135, destroying lots of living things on the planet.The odds of the asteroid, named Bennu, actually hitting Earth are one in 2,700. If the asteroid does get too close for comfort, the geniuses at NASA have hatched a plan.NASA says they could send a nine-ton “bulk impactor” to push the asteroid out of Earth’s orbit. The plan is called HAMMER, which stands for (deep breath) Hypervelocity Asteroid Mitigation Mission for Emergency Response.Though the odds are slim that the massive asteroid will hit Earth, in 1908, what is believed to be an asteroid crashed in Siberia with force 185 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.The impact flattened 80 million trees and killed hundreds of reindeer. Scientists say Bennu isn’t all bad.The asteroid is giving scientists a chance to test theories.
