BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's water resources imbalances between the north and south may worsen due to global climate changes and economic activities, said Vice Minister of Water Resources Hu Siyi.Typically, China's north is dry while its south has abundant water supplies.China will face unprecedented challenges in saving water in the next five-year plan from 2011 to 2015, said Hu at a national water-saving meeting in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, late September.Compared with the 1956-1979 period, rainfall in the Yellow River, Huaihe River, Haihe River and Liaohe River vallies in the 1980-2000 period had dropped six percent on average and river and lake water resources decreased 17 percent in these areas, according to figures from the Ministry of Water Resources.China's accelerated urbanization has pushed up demand for water.If the population in Beijing keeps on climbing, the water brought by the near completed South-to-North Water Diversion Project would not be enough, Hu said.China's water-saving targets during the 12th five-year plan from 2011 to 2015 include a 30-percent cut in water use for every 10,000 yuan (1,490 U.S. dollars) of gross industrial output, Hu said.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- China will stick to the strategy of expanding domestic demand, consumption in particular, and seek a new phase of economic growth boosted by consumption, investment and exports, according to an official document released Wednesday.The document, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal for Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program for China's Economic and Social Development (2011-2015), was adopted at the Fifth Plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee, which concluded nine days ago.Macro-economic controls would be boosted, according to the document.A key task in the 12th Five-Year Plan would be to consolidate and expand achievements in fighting the global economic downturn. BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Environmental Protection has urged stepping up efforts to address pollution in north China's Haihe River.Speaking at a meeting on the issue Friday, minister of environmental protection Zhou Shengxian ordered making "unremitting" efforts to relieve the "pain of the Haihe."Zhou also called upon government departments to strictly follow various industrial policies on environmental protection, with the focus on construction projects featuring high water costs and pollutant discharge and projects located along rivers or on the upriver area of drinking water sources.While stressing the protection of drinking water and the control of pollution, Zhou also encouraged adopting more "ecological methods" in sewage treatment and the rehabilitation of lakes and rivers.Zhou urged Beijing, Tianjin and other developed regions to be pioneers in upgrading sewage treatment technology and transforming sewage into resources.
