Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, primarily as an artform. But what if they had a purpose, beyond just aesthetics? “I think that we can upgrade tattoo inks to give people new abilities,” says Carson Bruns, a mechanical engineer professor at the University of Colorado. Bruns is also a tattoo aficionado. "I got my first tattoo when I was 19 years old, and I’ve been addicted to tattoos ever since," Bruns says.He spends his days in a lab, working to bring an ancient artform into the 21st Century. "My idea is that, by adding new function, new properties to the tattoo inks, that tattoos could potentially be used for more than just art," he says. Bruns is focused on a specific type of tattoo ink, one that would embed tiny microcapsules filled with certain material underneath the skin. One of his most promising developments would fill those capsules with UV dye. It’d essentially be a tattoo that tells you when you need to apply sunscreen. "So our tattoo, anytime you can see it, anytime it's visible to you, that's a sign your skin is dangerously exposed to UV light and its increasing your risk to skin cancer,” Bruns explains. Other types of inks would be heat-sensitive, like the squares he's tested on his own skin. Those would only appear when your body reached a certain temperature. "A tattooable thermometer, made of these heat sensitive tattoo inks could be a way to make it more accessible for people to read their body temp and check up on their own health," he says. Bruns says the possibilities are endless. "I like to joke tattoos can give you superpowers,” he says. “They can give our skin new properties we don't currently have."Bruns hopes that one day, we might even be able to come up with tattoo inks that could conduct electricity or even tell us our blood sugar or blood alcohol levels. 1843

A House panel passed a bill Wednesday to authorize additional funding for the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund until 2090, one day after comedian Jon Stewart sharply criticized members of Congress for not attending a subcommittee hearing on the issue and gave an emotional plea to extend the funding.The bill passed on a voice vote without opposition and now heads to the House floor for the full chamber to vote. The vote comes after the fund's administrator announced awards for pending and future claims would have to be cut unless Congress acted."Every sick responder and survivor should be treated with the same dignity and compassion," said House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from New York. "All responders and survivors, whether they got sick in 2015 or will get sick in 2025 or 2035, should be properly compensated. A 20-year-old Bangladeshi woman gave birth to twins -- 26 days after giving birth to her first child.Arifa Sultana gave birth to a boy in late February, according to Dr. Sheila Poddar, a gynecologist at Ad-Din hospital in Dhaka. After a normal delivery, the mother and baby were released from a different Dhaka hospital. Less than four weeks later, she was admitted to Ad-Din hospital."She came to the hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain," Poddar said. Doctors performed an ultrasound and realized Sultana was pregnant with twins.Sultana had two uteruses, a condition called uterus didelphys. Her first baby and the twins were conceived and grown in separate wombs.She did not get an ultrasound before the first delivery, so it was missed, Poddar said."It is not very common to have two uteruses. When the uterus develops, it comes from two tubes, and those tubes fuse together. For some women, the fusion does not occur, and the dividing wall does not dissolve," said Dr. S.N. Basu, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Max Healthcare hospital in New Delhi.Poddar was able to quickly perform a C-section to deliver twins: a boy and a girl. "All three children are safe and healthy," Poddar said. A Georgia homeowner shot and killed three masked teens as they approached his residence with their faces covered, authorities said.The three teens, one 15-year-old and two 16-year-olds, were all from the area but did not live in the specific neighborhood they were in, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office said.The teens approached three residents at the front yard of a home early Monday morning and attempted to rob them, authorities say.
