SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego company created technology for NASA's 2020 Mars rover, launching in July.The Perseverance is set to launch July 20, at 9:15 a.m. EST.NASA's been working on this project for more than a decade, drawing from past missions with hopes of finding evidence of past life on the red planet."It's a really exciting mission!" Mike Carpenter, VP of Engineering at KULR Technology said."We don't know for sure what they're going to find, but if they find any hard evidence of life that would be wonderful." Carpenter is thrilled to be a part of this mission, bringing a piece of San Diego to Mars.Carpenter said the company is known for it's technology that keeps batteries from exploding.For the rover, they created heat sinks that control the temperature around sensitive instruments. Specifically the heat sinks on Perseverance protect SHERLOC, a detector on the arm of the rover that looks for signs of past life.KULR sent similar tech to Mercury, but this is their first trip to Mars."It is the largest most sophisticated rover NASA has sent there," Carpenter said.According to NASA, Perseverance will be landing in the Jezero Crater, the site of an ancient river delta.The mission has four Science Goals:1. Determine whether life ever arose on Mars.2. Characterize the climate on Mars. (Seeking to find if an ancient climate could have supported life.)3. Characterize the geology of Mars.4. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died after an SUV veered off a freeway in the National City area and crash landed in the Sweetwater River Friday morning.The California Highway Patrol said the incident involving a Lexus SUV was reported just before 5:40 a.m. on the westbound side of state Route 54, near the transition to Interstate 5.ABC 10News learned a woman was walking on a bike path along the Sweetwater River when she saw a vehicle come off the freeway and down an embankment.The woman told authorities that the SUV almost hit her and then crashed in the water.Authorities at the scene confirmed that a man believed to be the driver was pulled from the water but died despite life-saving measures at the scene. The CHP identified the man as a 69-year-old Chula Vista resident.A team of divers was sent into the water to determine if more people were in the SUV, but no other victims were located. The CHP later confirmed the deceased male was the SUV's lone occupant.A tow truck helped pull the vehicle from the water.The cause of the crash is under investigation and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact local authorities. 1158

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A jury Tuesday found a man guilty of beating and raping two women on consecutive days in 2016. Jeremiah Ira Williams, 26, was found guilty on multiple charges Tuesday, including forcible rape and false imprisonment. Williams now faces 100 years to life in prison. His sentencing will be on May 30. A prosecutor Monday urged the jury to convict Williams, who is accused of choking and raping two women in different parts of San Diego on consecutive days in 2016.A defense attorney argued that police infused suspicions from the second case into the initial attack and mishandled evidence.Williams is charged with 13 counts including forcible rape, false imprisonment, sodomy and making a criminal threat.Earlier in the trial, Williams was removed from the courtroom for being disruptive and was not present Tuesday as attorneys presented their final arguments.Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador told jurors that Williams followed Jane Doe #1 from a parking structure to her University City apartment on August 13.With her keys in the door, she was knocked down, robbed at gunpoint and choked to a point where she thought she was going to die, the prosecutor said.After being taken inside the apartment, Williams beat and raped her, Amador argued. The next day, Williams beat and raped a woman working as a prostitute after meeting her in a motel in Grantville, Amador said.Jane Doe #2 was reportedly so terrified that she broke a window and jumped through it to get away.Deputy Public Defender Thomas Bahr told the jury that a detective had a feeling the two sexual assaults may be connected and jumped to conclusions in an attempt to solve the first attack.Bahr also told the jury that Jane Doe #2 lied throughout the investigation and said her story contained inconsistencies.Bahr said Jane Doe #1 was a “true victim,” yet she couldn’t assist police in making a composite sketch of her attacker. 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Penasquitos man says on Sunday morning he walked outside to discover someone had broken into most of the mailboxes on his street. He added that even mailboxes that had locks had been pried open and left empty.“I woke up this morning to pick up my newspaper and I noticed every mailbox up and down the street and adjacent streets I could see had been opened and all the mail had been removed,” he said. The neighbor asked ABC 10News not to be identified.He said he’s lived in the area for about 10 years and it’s generally quiet. They had one incident a few years ago where mail was stolen around tax return season. He’s concerned about this theft because of the looming November election.“I kinda felt it might’ve had something to do with stealing the ballots,” he said.He said both he and his next door neighbor had received their ballots in the days immediately before the theft. Other neighbors in the area also said they already got their ballots in the mail, but the incident is a reminder to be extra cautious with important voting documents moving through the postal system.“Personally, I’ve never been a victim of crime here, or do I know anybody that’s been a victim of crime here, so it’s something that’s concerning,” he said.The neighbor added that he did email the registrar’s office to let them know of the possibility of stolen ballots in his neighborhood. 1407

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A preliminary 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck in Inyo County, just north of Ridgecrest, on Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 10:40 a.m. in the Lone Pine area, about 60 miles north of Ridgecrest, according to the USGS. There have not been any immediate reports of injury or damage.The initial 5.8 earthquake was followed by several smaller shake-ups, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.6.USGS's "Did You Feel It?" map reported the quake was felt as far away as Fresno to the north, Los Angeles to the south, and Las Vegas, Nev., to the east. There was no threat of a tsunami due to the quake, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.The earthquake comes a day after a 7.5-magnitude quake struck Mexico's southern coastline, just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. 822
