NEW YORK (AP) — Americans held back on spending during the start of the holiday shopping season, a troubling sign for retailers and the state of the U.S. economy. U.S. retail sales fell a seasonally adjusted 1.1% in November, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. It was the biggest drop in seven months, and a steeper decline than Wall Street analysts had expected. The Commerce Department on Wednesday also revised October’s report, saying that retail sales fell 0.1% that month, instead of rising 0.3% as it previously reported. Retailers had tried to get people to shop early, with Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and others offering holiday deals in October.The report points to a weak start to the all-important holiday shopping season, which can usually account for a quarter or more of a retailer’s annual sales. Black Friday was also a bust. Typically one of the busiest shopping days of the season, shoppers mostly stayed home after health officials warned people not to shop in person, and retailers followed suit by putting their best deals online. Nestlé Prepared Foods is recalling more than 92,000 pounds of its Lean Cuisine Baked Chicken frozen meals after receiving complaints from consumers finding plastic pieces in their meals.On Saturday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically white hard plastic pieces.The agency believes that the mashed potatoes used in the meal were contaminated with pieces of a plastic conveyor belt that broke during production.According to the press release, the products were produced and packaged on September 2, 2020, and shipped nationwide. The products bear the establishment number "EST.P-9018," which can be found on the side of the case near the lot number, the agency said.They have a best before date of October 2021.Although they have not received any reports of illness or injury, FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers' freezers.FSIS advises that if you have purchased the recall item, throw it away or return it to where you bought it. 1088

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for the Girl Scouts say that the century-old organization is now directly competing with the Boy Scouts for female recruits and that it's not a fair fight. The lawyers filed papers Thursday in federal court in Manhattan to repel an effort by the Boy Scouts to toss out a 2-year-old trademark infringement lawsuit. Lawyers for the Boy Scouts last month asked a judge to reject claims that the organization is infringing on trademarks when it recruits girls with words like “scouts" and “scouting.” The Girl Scouts say in their filing that the Boy Scouts' marketing of expanded services for girls is “highly damaging.” 648
NEW YORK (AP) — The playwright behind such comedic hits such as "The Odd Couple" and "Plaza Suite," has died. Neil Simon was 91.According to Bill Evans, Simon's longtime friend and the Shubert Organization director of media relations, says the playwright died early Sunday of complications from pneumonia in a Manhattan hospital.Simon was the American theater's most successful and prolific playwright in the second half of the 20th century. He won three regular Tonys, plus one for special achievement, as well as a Pulitzer and the Mark Twain prize for humor.Simon's successes included "The Sunshine Boys," ''Plaza Suite" and "Sweet Charity." Many of his plays were adapted into movies and one, "The Odd Couple," became a popular TV series. 750
