Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he is running for president, telling "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert that he believes the United States is in "quicksand" where Americans feel they are "running in place and it is not adding up to anything."Swalwell has been contemplating a run for months. The California Democrat has made several trips to early nominating states like Iowa and New Hampshire, telling reporters that he sees a space for a candidate like himself in the race and hinted earlier this month that he was "close to making a decision.""None of that is going to change until we get a leader who is willing to go big on the issues we take on, be bold in the solutions we offer and do good in the ways that we govern. I am ready to solve these problems. I am running for president of the United States," he told Colbert.Swalwell, who also 877

CLEVELAND — A Florida cat who has been missing for eight years was found in Ohio. Barley was found by her family 10 years ago as a six-week-old kitten in a dumpster in Tampa Bay, according to a Facebook post by Angels for Animals, the Canfield, Ohio, animal shelter that identified the cat.Two years after her family found her, they moved to another home. During the move, Barley and her cat big brother Spike got outside and were never seen again. Barley traveled 1,100 miles to Canfield over eight years. She was brought in to Angels for Animals as a stray cat last week, and the staff discovered she was micro-chipped. On Wednesday, the shelter was able to get in touch with her owners in Florida. The shelter is now working with the family to figure out how to get Barley back to Florida. 805

Despite saying that the spread of coronavirus is going to get "very, very bad," President Donald Trump said that he plans on reopening commerce in the country "very soon."The statement is at odds at the recommendation of many leading public health officials, who suggest the worst of the spread of the coronavirus might not come until for later in the spring, although an exact date on the peak is still up in the air, according to the CDC. Trump in his Monday press briefing suggested that the economic fallout from preventing the spread of coronavirus could be worse than the actual spread of coronavirus. "America will again, and soon, be open for business. Very soon. A lot sooner than three or four months that somebody was suggesting. A lot sooner. We cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself," Trump said.Trump's comments were back by economic adviser Larry Kudlow, who told Fox News on Monday, "The president is right. The cure can't be worse than the disease. And we're going to have to make some difficult tradeoffs."The Trump administration is requesting states to not issue updated unemployment numbers as many workers are out of work to prevent the spread of the virus. The Dow Jones has lost more than one-third of its value in the last six weeks as the virus has spread globally.Last week, the Trump administration issued a 15-day guidance to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Trump said that the guidance will be reevaluated next week. Amid the guidance, a number of states have closed all non-essential businesses in order to slow the spread of the virus. The top concern is that hospital could be overwhelmed with a surge of patients. Trump added that "We're giving the governors a lot of leeway."Trump said on Monday that reopening sections of the economy will take weeks and not months. "We can do both at the same time," Trump said about reopening the economy and preventing the spread of coronavirus. As part of fighting the virus, Trump boasted about several drugs that are being shipped to the states, with the hope they can be used to treat coronavirus patients. These drugs however, as of Monday, are still early in the testing phase and have not been approved by the FDA as a treatment for coronavirus. Also during Monday's news briefing, Trump and Attorney General William Barr said that an executive order will be issued to prohibit the hoarding of medical supplies. Barr said that the order won't go after individuals who have a large stockpile of supplies, but will target corporations and businesses that could potentially have warehouses full of supplies, such as masks and hand sanitizer. DJ Kashief Hamilton says he was playing music on a cruise ship dock at St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands when he heard a loud scream. The DJ stopped the party. He says he saw people running, including friend Randolph Donovan, with whom he works as an entertainer for visitors to the island. The 34-year-old Donovan jumped about 10 feet down off the dock into the ocean. A young woman in a wheelchair was sinking."I got her out of her wheelchair," Donovan told CNN. Someone on the dock threw down a life preserver, he said. Then Hamilton, 33, says he jumped in to help his friend, who was holding up the young woman, kicking furiously to keep the two of them afloat. "I can't go no more," Donovan told Hamilton.Hamilton said the water was about 35 or 40 feet deep where they jumped in, making it more than deep enough for the woman weighted down by her wheelchair to sink.Together with onlookers atop the dock, Hamilton and Donovan pulled the young woman back up to safety. They never got her name, but they said one of her family members gave them a big hug."I'm glad the outcome was something positive," Hamilton said. "We would have lost someone who is both a family member and a passenger."They easily could have lost their own lives, too, if a gust of wind had buffeted the waves, moving the massive Carnival Fascination cruise ship parked at the dock. If the ship had shifted a few yards, the three could have been crushed against the dock, Hamilton said.A spokeswoman for Carnival Cruise Line declined to identify the passenger who was rescued, but told CNN, "The guest was seen by our medical team and did not sustain injuries. A complimentary replacement wheelchair has been provided for the duration of the cruise."Strangers now call them heroesHamilton and Donovan said the governor and a legislator applauded their rescue efforts. The two men said US Virgin Islands Gov. Albert Bryan, Jr. called them and told them, "On behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands, I want to say thank you." 2009
