We speak predominantly Spanish at home, so for someone to be turned away for their language it really offended me," said Megan Aviles, who witnessed the incident. It was Tuesday when Aviles stood in line with her two daughters waiting to register for the ministry's annual toy giveaway. She noticed several Hispanic women in front were being denied access to the registration because they didn't speak English."I went forward to try and assist and was like 'look, I can translate for these women. I'm bilingual,' " said Aviles.However, the pastor and executive director of the organization admitted he didn't allow her or anyone else to translate for the families."The reason I didn't use one of our guests or a family member or even a child is my experience with interpreters is they don't necessarily interpret what I say," said pastor Al Poncel.He said he would feel more comfortable having interpreters he knows, so nothing is lost in translation. Poncel said this is the first time that he has ran into a language issue at the ministry after years of being with the organization, but still he felt he made a mistake by turning away the families just because he didn't have the staff to help with the high demand."I didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings. I didn't want to offend anybody. I want to help as many people as I can," said Poncel.He said he is looking at ways to improve and be more inclusive of the needs of the community, so he is already looking at partnering with other local ministries and organizations to help interpret in the future."The 18 and 19 is going to be big days of our Christmas outreach. I'm going to make sure I have an interpreter here to be able to properly interpret, have the proper forms because I'm required by the food bank of USDA to fill out specific form," said Poncel.Loaves and Fishes' mission is to "alleviate suffering of impoverished families by offering charitable assistance."They have served about 20,000 families since January, according to Poncel. 2230

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the loss of Roland Escarcega Jr., a father of five and an apparent victim of those deadly blue pills. When Shonta Chaloux last saw his cousin, Escarcega was his usual jovial self."We were joking. I gave him a hard time, and he gave me a hard time," said Chaloux.Two months later, Chaloux got the news."Devastated, sad ... it was a family member who found him at his home," said Chaloux.Escarcega, 39, was found dead in his bed in late July at his home on the San Pasqual Indian Reservation after Escarcega, who worked for the tribe's water department, hadn't shown up for work. Chaloux doesn't know all the details, but says his cousin is one of the victims of the deadly pills mentioned in a sheriff's department warning."Assuming whoever went into his room and what was recovered matches what was found in the other victim's homes," said Chaloux.In late July, deputies said blue counterfeit Oxycodone pills, likely laced with Fentanyl, caused four overdose deaths in 36 hours. Chaloux says his cousin was among those who died during those 36 hours. Chaloux did not know his cousin was taking painkillers or who may have supplied them. "Whoever cut those pills, they deserve to go to prison. They are killing people," said Chaloux.Chaloux is hoping by sharing Escarcega's story, he can help other families."Listen to family members if they are struggling and see what they're struggling with," said Chaloux.For those who turn to the streets for pain relief, he has this message. "Don't do it. You're playing Russian Roulette with your own life," said Chaloux.Escarcega's funeral will be held Tuesday. (KGTV) — A North County student was arrested Friday after a reported school threat.Administrators at Oak Glen High School in Valley Center learned of a potential threat from a suspended, 15-year-old student at about 8 a.m., San Diego Sheriff's Department said. Deputies did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.The high school and nearby Valley Center High were placed in a lock down as deputies responded. Deputies identified the student and soon located and arrested the suspect.SDSO said a search of the student's home was conducted, but no weapons were located.Both high schools were released from their lock downs just after 9 a.m.The student has been booked into Juvenile Hall, SDSO said.
