(KGTV) - A South Bay dentist is donating his time and services to a local Border Patrol agent with ALS.10News first showed you Jeff Miranda’s fight against his deadly disease earlier this month. Miranda was diagnosed three years ago. He is now in a wheelchair and uses eye gaze technology to communicate.Dr. Alex Liu of the Otay Lakes Dental Group saw the 10News story and decided to help. (KGTV) — Worried about having their young students continue to develop reading skills during distance learning, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has launched a new effort to get each students books they can have at home.“When you start reading at a later age, reading becomes a chore," said Dr. Lydia Burgos, Principal at Montgomery Elementary. "We want them to become lovers of books.”CVESD schools are working to find sources of reading level-appropriate books. They have developed partnerships with civic organizations, such as Lions and Rotary Clubs, as well as getting donations from UC San Diego. Some teachers are soliciting cash donations online to purchase books. “We begged, borrowed, and stolen from anywhere that we can in order to have the different levels we need so that all of our students have multiple books in their book bag," said Harborside Elementary Principal Lisa Forehand.Once the books are obtained, they are divided into packets that families can pick up during set distribution times. 1050

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman narrowly avoided being hit by a falling tree branch on a busy Chula Vista street Wednesday. A large branch fell from the eucalyptus tree along Telegraph Canyon Road about 3 p.m., crashing through the passenger side window of a woman’s car. Had a passenger been in the seat, the person would have been impaled, crews on the scene estimated. The woman pulled into the bike lane to assess the damage. She was able to walk independently but paramedics took her to the hospital for an assessment. No other cars were damaged, officials said. A neighbor told 10News they have seen other branches fall from the same tree. No one has been injured by the other incidents. 706

Martinez said she raised the red flag regarding financial issues at the district, but was not taken seriously. She said when it came to some of the district's financial accounts, "that's how the reconciled. They just made up stuff and made a balance."Martinez said she was sitting next to Superintendent Karen Janney when the multimillion-dollar deficit was discovered. "She said, hey it's the business system. It's old, huh? Just making up stuff. I've heard about six different versions of the truth and none of them have been truthful."The former Chief Financial Officer Karen Michel would not participate in the audit. The team also could not make contact with Doug Martens, the director of fiscal services.With the release of the FCMAT report, it will be up to the District Attorney, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and State Controller to determine if fraud did in fact occur within the Sweetwater District.The district was given 15 days to respond to the audit's findings with its "proposed action."One teacher in the district, who did not want to be identified, said the audit's findings were sad, but not surprising. "Hopefully, the positive that can come out of this is that we become more transparent and have more oversight and this will never happen again," the teacher said. On Tueday, SUHSD spokesman Manny Rubio provided this statement to 10News on behalf of the district: "The Sweetwater Union High School District is currently reviewing the report from FCMAT and its findings and recommendations. The District takes this report very seriously and will be determining next steps. Given that this matter is still pending, we will refrain from any additional comment at this time."The District Attorney's office said they are reviewing the audit. "Back around Thanksgiving, we had one documented case where a lady walked out, she thought she was getting into her Uber, and she got into another car. She reported that she had been sexually assaulted."In Los Angeles, one man was even arrested for posing as a rideshare driver with the intention of preying on female passengers.Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati asked Ryan Higgins, who estimated he uses a ridesharing service at least once a week, if he had ever taken steps to make sure he was getting in the right car."Honestly, now that you say that, I don't think I've ever done anything," the Cincinnati resident said. "I think they just say, 'Hey, Ryan?' or they say my name, and I just go for it."Franz said intoxicated would-be riders are the most likely to make a mistake and put themselves in a vulnerable position, but anyone can benefit from a few simple safety tips.First, make sure you've got the correct license plate before you get in a car. Uber and Lyft both display the plate number as soon as it matches you with a driver so you can spot the correct vehicle.Next, get into the back seat, not the passenger seat. If you have gotten into a car with a person of ill intent, it's easier to escape from the back than the front, where they might be able to physically restrain you."(If) somebody's doing something inappropriate, it becomes very obvious very quickly," he said.
