(KGTV) - All Tribes Charter School in Valley Center has found a solution to the problem of kids paying too much attention to their cell phones in class.They've started using Yondr pouches to lock up phones at the beginning of the school day."These things are more distracting than hormones for teenage kids," says All Tribes Charter School Administrator Michelle Parada. "Attention to the cell phone is not attention to school."READ: Study: Separation from cellphone causes anxiety for someAccording to a Pew Research Survey in 2018, 95% of teenagers say they have a cell phone, and 45% of them say they're online "almost constantly." Fifteen percent say they've experienced cyber-bullying.Parada says that addiction has led to poor attention in class, declining grades and cyber-bullying.All that changed when the school deployed 120 Yondr pouches last spring.Every day, the kids turn off and lock their phones in a pouch when they arrive at school. They keep the locked pouch with them all day long. The pouches get unlocked by administrators at the end of the day.Predictably, the kids don't like it."I like having my phone, having easy access," says Senior Melani Maxcy. "And with this thing, I can't do it.""This school didn't need it really," says Willow Robinson. "Yeah, we'd post every once in a while in class, but that's when we were just sitting around and talking."Parada says it was also tricky getting parents to adjust, many of whom like to keep in touch with their students throughout the day."They're probably the biggest perpetrators of calling their kids during the day. Constantly," says Parada. "They're constantly calling, messaging or texting their kids."Parada tells parents if there is an emergency and they need to reach their student, they can still call the school office. She says administrators are usually able to reach a student within a couple of minutes.Despite the push-back, Parada says the new policy is helping. Grades and attention are up, and cyber-bullying has gone down."All of the picture taking, video taking, SnapChat, Instagram has stopped," says Parada, noting that the kids can't post if they don't have a phone. "Kids are compelled to take pictures, to take videos and start shooting them out to other people."She adds it has also cut down on disruptions in class and food deliveries to the school.A spokesperson for Yonder tells 10News that demand for the product has grown in Southern California through the last year. In San Diego, there are now four schools using the pouches: All Tribes Charter School, Caliber Beta Academy, Mark Twain High School and the San Diego County ROP.The schools pay a fee to lease the pouches and the unlocking tool. Twenty years ago this week, Matthew Shepard died after being beaten, burned and left tied to a fence in Wyoming by two men who targeted him because he was gay.Since then, Shepard's parents have spread his legacy by going around the world advocating for civic and LGBTQ rights.But they hadn't found a place that felt safe enough to lay their son's ashes to rest.Until now.On October 26, Shepard will be interred at the Washington National Cathedral, the Matthew Shepard Foundation said."When Matt was taken from us, we hadn't had any death or plots plans," his parents, Judy and Dennis Shepard, said in an email. TUCSON, Ariz. — A nationwide scam claims you'll be arrested because you missed jury duty and you'll have to pay right away to escape it. You might think you can spot a gimmick a mile away, but a Tucson businesswoman fell for it last week.At the start of Denise Hausler's busy workday as a licensed professional counselor, she received a call that went to voicemail. The man identified her by name."Hello, Ms. Hausler, this is Sgt. Adam with the Pima County Sheriff's Department warrant and citation division," the caller said. "Ma'am I'm calling in regards of an ongoing civil matter, ma'am."Hausler called him back right away. The imposter told her there were two federal warrants out for her arrest. Hausler panicked, fearing she would be arrested at her office in front of her clients."And he said, 'We're going to send someone to arrest you unless you volunteer to come down to the sheriff's office off of Benson Highway,' which made sense because the sheriff's office is off of Benson Highway," she said.The caller told her if she drove down to the sheriff's department right away, she can post bond then appear before a judge who will probably give her the money back."I'm panicked, I'm crying, I'm literally thanking this man for helping me not be arrested and being able to go home and not be detained and apologizing," she said.And he told her she can't get off the phone with him or talk to anyone."'We're going to track you by phone until you get to this location because we don't want you to flee,' and I'm believing this," she said.Minutes later, the caller instructed her to first buy My Vanilla cards from Walmart — five of them — totaling ,500 because the payment system was down at the sheriff's department and those specific cards are used for these types of cases.And she believed him. "I know, I know," she said. "In retrospect, I think, who am I? It doesn't even sound real. But when you're in it, he was so intimidating and so direct and telling me, 'We're going to come and detain you.' " She bought the cards. The scammer then told her to read all the card numbers to him to verify they're valid.She did, but at that point she became suspicious and asked a stranger to call the sheriff's department."And the man said, 'You're getting scammed. You need to get in there an undo your cards,' " she said.But it was too late. She could only recover less than a ,000. Hausler wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable."I just don't want other people to fall for it. If you hear 'My Vanilla,' now I know the sheriff's department does not come to get you if you did miss jury duty. I didn't know that," said Hausler.KGUN called that same phone number left on Hausler's voicemail and it's the same voice saying it's the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
