Mail delivery is something just about everyone depends on, but for millions of Americans, mail services are a vital lifeline for health.“Levothyroxine which is a thyroid medication, I've taken this probably 40 years,” 87-year-old Barbara Raizen said. She takes multiple medications. “I right now live in a senior residence, I live in independent living.”She relies on the Postal Service for a lot of reasons, one being her medications.“It’s cheaper, it’s cheaper than the drug store, it’s cheaper than King Soopers,” she said. “And you know, every dollar counts.”That and it’s difficult for her to leave, due to COVID-19 restrictions. “If we go out we have to come back and be quarantined for two weeks,” Raizen said.Millions share similar concerns as the U.S. Postal Service deals with increased demand, lower processing capacity, and potential cost cutting.“It’s really a problem,” Raizen said. “If the prescription runs out, I have to call the doctor and he calls it back in but it comes by mail and it takes 7 to 10 days or more to get it.”“It’s both the increase in volume and the decrease in the processing capacity,” said Jeannette Song, an operations management expert and Duke University professor. “Many more people ordered online, so that increased the volume for the postal services.”The National Association of Letter Carriers said the Postal Service handles 1.2 billion prescription drug shipments a year, nearly 4 million every day. Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates 14 million people relied on mail order pharmacies for at least one prescription in 2018.“At each step, the process has its capacity,” Song said. “It’s multistage processing, so this is a journey of that. Certainly each step takes some time.”While USPS is experiencing strains right now, she said this happens other times, too.“Holidays,” she said. “Usually get delays, it’s just the same thing”With all the debates going on over cost cutting and the current pressures on the Postal Service, millions are worried. Some taking to Twitter to share their story under the #USPSMeds hashtag.“The post office is important,” Sandy Reavey said. She also relies on the Postal Service for her medications. “It’s just easier. You don't have to go and stand in line at the pharmacy, and it can be cheaper because you can get a three month supply versus doing it every month and having to go back every month to the pharmacy.” She added that especially right now, not everyone necessarily wants to stand in a line with a bunch of people.She receives multiple medications through the mail. “If I don’t take the medication, it causes my heart to go out of whack and could cause me to have a heart attack or a stroke.”As debates continue over Postal Service overtime and other cost cutting measures, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has promised to suspend for now. Sandy and Barbara continue hoping their medications make it on time.“Growing up I’ve already trusted their mail service to deliver and not tamper with my mail,” Reavey said.“What are you supposed to do? Things like paid maternity leave and vacation, and flexible working times and locations are more likely to drive millennials to change jobs. But once they find what they are looking for, this poll shows they want the stability to stay there.In Pinto's case, it was flexibility and feeling like she was making an impact.As president of Keiser University's West Palm Beach Campus, Kimberly Lea works with millennials every day. She sees a shift in their mindset, forcing a shift in the workforce as a whole."When they talk about the millennial it's 'ugh they are not loyal,' but I don't think that's a bad thing. I think they are discerning and they want a quality relationship and quality experience. And if the experience is not a good one, they are not going to stay just because they are supposed to be loyal. That doesn't work for them," she says. The Gallup Poll conducted recently also showed millennials want benefits and perks that directly impact their lives and the lives of their family members.Lea says seeing those desires even led her to reexamine her own. "Because of the information available to millennials, they are not afraid to ask for what they want. I think it took me into maybe the last 5-10 years to say, 'Oh, I could ask for something different, I'm not going to just take what's offered to me,' " she says"It makes me reflect a little bit on my own philosophy, you don't have to stay someplace just because you've been there before or you've agreed to do that. You need to be discerning and you need to make decisions whether it is the right thing for you, whether it matches your values and I think that's very good. It makes us more reflective and makes it a better experience than going in and not being engaged," she added.Now working for Expedia Cruiseship Centers in Boca Raton, Pinto says she is happier than ever. She says, "it's really what I want. There's days when I'm busy at home, I have appointments at home so I can work from home and there are days I have clients that might be coming in so I come into work." Lowe’s, in partnership with a group of NFL players, says it is contributing million in Christmas trees to needy families and facilities in “need of extra cheer” this holiday season.All told, Lowe’s will deliver 13,000 pre-lit trees to homes and organizations throughout the country. Among the facilities to receive the donated trees will be childcare centers, youth centers, first responder stations and nonprofit housing organizations.Top NFL players including Dak Prescott, Jared Goff, Adam Thielen and Andy Dalton are joining the project. MillerCoors says beer prices could rise and workers could lose their job if the president follows through on a new tax on imported aluminum. President Donald Trump announced Thursday he’s planning to impose steep tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum to protect the U.S. industry from unfair competition. In a statement, MillerCoors called it “misguided” and says there isn’t enough domestic supply to meet the demand for its products. House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday he hopes the president, “will consider the unintended consequences of the new taxes."  593
