SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday activist groups rallied at events throughout the day with the same message, more needs to be done to stop police brutality."My son was not killed he was murdered," Richard Abuka's son, Alfred Olango, was shot and killed by police in El Cajon back in 2016.Monday morning he stood on the steps of the Hall of Justice with other activists dredging up tragedy, compelling people to hear their message that new policies to hold police accountable need to be put in place. They held a banner with the names of those lost at the hands of law enforcement throughout the county."I've been pulled over numerous times, ripped out of my car, my car searched just because I'm driving with tattoos," a former convict by the nickname "Flaco" said at the Teach-In event held at San Diego City College.The events all supporting the National Day of Actions to Stop Police Brutality."We don't need cops," panelists spoke on ways to find a solution."I do work with the police and the DAs department in training their officers, and I help run a restorative justice program that's city wide and I'm expanding it to county wide," Aeiramique Blake said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Keep an eye out for two new residents at the San Diego Zoo - two penguin chicks named Lucas and Dot. The three-month-old penguin chicks will reside in the Cape Fynbos habitat with a colony of 29 adult penguins. After weeks of careful planning—including providing the chicks with a private pool, where they learned how to swim the hand raised penguins got to see their new home. The two juveniles immediately started swimming and climbing rocks, while keepers vigilantly monitored their progress. Animal care staff said the initial introduction went very smoothly and the birds behaved exactly as keepers had hoped, but they plan to allow only closely monitored interactions for the next few days.“We will be pulling [Lucas and Dot] back at night,” said Debbie Denton, keeper. “We don’t want to leave them out unsupervised yet. We just want to give them a few days out here with the rest of the colony, and make sure that they are comfortable enough to do OK on their own overnight.”Lucas and Dot were hatched in San Diego from eggs supplied though a breeding loan by the Minnesota Zoo, which has successfully hatched more than 24 eggs since opening its African penguin habitat in 2011.    Guests can visit Lucas and Dot at their home in the Cape Fynbos habitat, inside Africa Rocks at the Zoo.    1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It has been nearly two years since Denelle Mitchell’s husband took his own life. CAL FIRE Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 5, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge. Denelle Mitchell did not want to talk about the day it happened, but the emotions she dealt with in the days and months after his death are hard to forget. “One of the first feelings I felt was ashamed or embarrassed at the type of way that he died,” Denelle Mitchell said. “It comes and goes in waves of being mad or sad.”Her husband was dedicated to his job — a job that was his passion.“He loved the acts of fighting fires. He loved the community… the brotherhood and sisterhood that they had,” Denelle said. But there were difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends.” What wasn’t obvious to many were struggles behind the scenes.RELATED: Veterinarian suicides on the rise: Student loan debt, compassion fatigue among factors in suicide increase“He did talk about his depression quite a bit and I lived it with him. I was there with him when we were going through some really hard times,” Denelle said. “Marriage can be hard, owning a home and renovating a home can be hard, having a kid — that’s a lot of life stresses.”There were also tough times at work. “The fire seasons were getting longer and harder,” she said. “There’s days where as a firefighter wife, they come home and they just are so exhausted — mentally, physically, and emotionally drained." The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance recorded 98 firefighter and EMT suicides so far this year. Jeff Dill, the founder of FBHA, said the number this year is on track to be higher than 2018. In 2018, there were 108 suicides. In 2017, the number was 120. A study by the Ruderman Family Foundation said depression among firefighters is nearly double the general population. Firefighters and police are at higher risk for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide, according to the study.Denelle now focuses on raising their son, Aiden. She encourages loved ones to pay attention to those who may be struggling. “Don’t just let it go by the wayside. Don’t take no for an answer… try to research the signs,”Denelle said.Locally and statewide, action has been taken to ensure resources are available for first responders. Recently, the County Board of Supervisors approved the Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responder Behavioral Health Program, which will offer confidential mental and behavior health support by connecting first responders with a clinical professional.The governor also signed several bills that focus on improving protections for the state’s firefighters and first responders when it comes to mental health. AB 1116 (the California Firefighter Peer Support and Crisis Referral Services Act) establishes statewide standards for peer support programs. SB 542 (the Trauma Treatment Act) will provide “first responders with workers’ compensation while they recover from their mental health scars,” according to a news release from the governor’s office. “Bringing awareness to the topic makes it easier to talk about,” Denelle said. She said she is grateful that she did not have to go through this process alone. “I wanted to thank all our friends and family for the support, especially the Cal Fire community, Local 2881, and Chief Patrick Walker,” Denelle told Team 10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer has directed city staff to reinstate San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Girls Empowerment Camp that was abruptly canceled last week.The event was canceled one day after attorney Al Reva sent a letter to the city’s attorney and organizers of the event.The letter claims that Reva’s client Rich Allison was “deterred and prevented from timely enrolling his son in this camp because boys were not invited to attend, based solely on their sex.”RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellation?Families who previously registered for the canceled camp will have first choice of which of the two weekends the camp is being offered they would like to participate in.“Our firefighters, staff and volunteers put their hearts and souls into this event,” said Fire Chief Brian Fennessy. “We are committed to moving forward with this excellent opportunity for young people. Last year, we heard that the Girls Empowerment Camp was a priceless experience for the campers. We want the same for our 2018 participants.”The Girls Empowerment Camp is a free two-day camp for youth ages 14-18 “regardless of age or gender.”The camp introduces participants to career opportunities in firefighting and encourages them to consider public safety as a career option.“We made a commitment to hundreds of kids and their families and we are going to stand by that,” Mayor Faulconer said. “This is an important camp that teaches kids what it’s like to be a firefighter and exposes many of them to a career opportunity they may not have considered previously. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
