SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County is now able to test for novel coronavirus without needing to send samples to the CDC, the Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday. The County Public Health Lab can now run up to 40 tests at once. The lab is one of dozens certified by the CDC throughout the U.S. “This is great news for San Diego County and will help with our ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Being able to test locally means that when we have patients under investigation, we can more rapidly remove unneeded restrictions from those without infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is getting its first round of Pfizer vaccines to fight the coronavirus next week, but the vaccine is recommended for those 16 years and older.Many parents are concerned about what that means for their children and going back to school."Essentially the Pfizer vaccine wasn't studied in kids under 12 but we are going to see more study in them," Dr. Abi Olulade, with Sharp Family Medicine said.While Pfizer is working on a child-safe vaccine, their competitor Moderna started testing their vaccine on 12-17-year-olds Thursday.Dr. Olulade sees the newly approved Pfizer vaccine as a lifeline, "we have a weapon now in the war against this virus and we're all breathing a huge sigh of relief."The vaccine a relief for our healthcare system swamped with coronavirus patients.When a shot is approved and safe for kids, Dr. Olulade said it's important parents have their kids vaccinated."Vaccines have a very long and proven safety record in kids," Dr. Olulade said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers arrested a man for attacking a four-year-old girl outside an apartment complex on the 4300 block of 50th Street.According to witnesses, the little girl’s father was dropping the girl off at her grandmother’s home around 11:30. Before the grandmother could walk the four-year-old through the security gates of her complex, a stranger attacked the child from behind.A neighbor, who only asked to use his first name, Robert, says he heard someone calling for the help, so he came outside. He says he saw the grandmother had gotten through the gate, but the father and another neighbor were outside of the entrance trying to hold off the attacker. Robert felt compelled to step in.“He came at me, and it seemed like he was going for someone, and that someone was a child,” he said, “so I had no other recourse, I hit him once he went down. He bit my leg. He got up, and he started coming after me.”But the man didn’t stay down, instead continued to attack.“Very very vicious, he had a very crazy look,” Robert said. “He wasn’t saying anything, he was grunting like a feral animal. He was exceptionally strong. He just wouldn’t quit, even when the police got here, he was very very strong.”Robert says he had no idea why he was trying to hurt the little girl but said the man might have been under the influence of something.Police arrested the suspect.Robert recalled seeing red marks around the little girl’s neck but said she was okay though visibly shaken.She is home with her parents. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council leaders will consider several measures aimed at lessening the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic in San Diego.Among the legislation are measures that place a moratorium on evictions due to non-payment from loss of wages due to COVID-19, prevent immigration enforcement operations at hospitals and other healthcare facilities, and provide relief from utility shutoffs or late fees because of non-payment due to coronavirus.“The COVID-19 pandemic is already causing harm throughout our communities and across our regional economy, impacting vulnerable families, individuals, and businesses,” City Council President Georgette Gómez said. “We must act immediately to protect those who most are at risk of devastating financial hardship.”The council will also request Gov. Gavin Newsom implement a temporary moratorium on residential evictions due to loss of wages caused by the outbreak.Council leaders also plan to request Mayor Kevin Faulconer enforce earned sick leave and minimum wage ordinances, place a temporary ban on vehicle habitation fees and impounds, and work with hotels to offer rooms to unsheltered individuals and families. 1187

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police announced Friday the arrest of a man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman in East Village.Gary Cushinberry, 51, dragged the woman into some bushes near 13th Street and Island Avenue about 11:30 p.m. on November 5, police said. After the assault, Cushinberry ran west toward Island Avenue, police said.The woman had been walking alone to her car when she was attacked.The San Diego Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit released a composite sketch of the suspect the following day. Through tips and leads, investigators identified Cushinberry as the suspect.Police found Cushinberry Friday morning in the 200 block of 17th Street. He was arrested on several sex assault charges and taken to San Diego County Central Jail.Officers also confirmed that Cushinberry had an outstanding warrant for theft in Allen County, Indiana.Police are asking anyone with information to call the SDPD Sex Crimes Unit at 619-531-2210. 975
