BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- A ceremony with a bonfire and firecrackers was held Tuesday night in the new seat of a quake-leveled county in southwest China's Sichuan Province, prior to the Chinese Lunar New Year on Thursday.The Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important Chinese holiday. It is a time for family reunions, gift giving and fireworks.It will be even merrier for the survivors of the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, who just moved into their new homes in the new town.The earthquake survivors are preparing for the first Spring Festival in their new homes.Xia Tianfeng of Beichuan County, Mianyang City, is sticking red paper decorations onto the windows of her new house for good luck in the New Year."We finally have our new house. Why wouldn't I be happy?" asked Xia.She and her family lived in a makeshift house for two years before moving into their new house one month ago.Dong Depa, 43, and his family moved into their new house in Yingxiu Town, the epicenter of the quake, five days ago."I can pay off the debt incurred to build the house in two years," said Dong, who spent only 30,000 yuan (4,541 U.S. dollars) for the house's construction and decoration, with the rest being shouldered by the government.Dong lost his two children in the quake but he and his wife have since had another child, a son."Last year, we spent the Spring Festival in the dormitory of the brick factory where I work as a cook. Now we can finally enjoy the festival in our own home," said Dong, unable to conceal his joy.Xia told Xinhua the ceremony for the new county seat was the real taste for a happy new year.Reconstruction has finished in the quake-hit zones in Sichuan, with most survivors now in their new houses.In Beichuan County alone, 96.5 percent of the survivors already have their new house.The new county seat is located in Yongchang Town, about 23 kilometers from the quake-leveled old one.The 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwest China on May 12, 2008, leaving about 80,000 people dead or missing.Waving goodbye to their temporary barracks, 7,397 households have been allocated new apartments, among which 3,504 households were former Beichuan residents, while others were from different Wenchuan earthquake-hits regions."The new apartment has already been simply decorated by the time I received the door key. With our new furniture, we can wait no longer to move into the home," said 45-year-old Xie Xinghe, a former resident of Beichuan.Including 50,000 yuan (about 7,575 U.S. dollars) in loans, Xie paid a preferential price of 79,600 yuan (about 12,000 U.S dollars) for the 100 square meter new apartment.Losing his only son in the earthquake, Xie and his wife adopted a one-year-old boy."It is the child who brings me new hope for the future," Xie said. Following the Lunar New Year celebration in his new home, Xie will try his best to work for some years to pay back the loan and save money to ensure a better education for his son."It is such magic to build a new town within three years, even so anywhere around the world. And we see it now," said Xu Zhenxi, director with the headquarter of new town program of Beichuan, which is supported by east China's Shandong Province.From May 25, 2009 to September 25, 2010, Shandong Province supported the new Beichuan county seat project, which was completed within 15 months.

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Xinhua) -- A variation in a gene involved in regulating cholesterol in the bloodstream also appears to affect progesterone production in women, making it a likely culprit in a substantial number of cases of their infertility, a new study from Johns Hopkins University researchers suggests.The Hopkins group has also developed a simple blood test for this variation of the scavenger receptor class B type 1 gene ( SCARB1) but emphasized there is no approved therapy yet to address the problem in infertile women.Following up studies in female mice that first linked a deficiency in these receptors for HDL -- the so-called "good" or " healthy" cholesterol -- and infertility, researchers report finding the same link in studies of women with a history of infertility.The findings has been published on-line this week in the journal Human Reproduction.If the new study's findings hold up on further investigation, the John Hopkins team says they not only will offer clues into a genetic cause of some infertility, but could also lead to a treatment already shown to work in mice."Infertility is fairly common and a lot of the reasons for it are still unknown," warns endocrinologist Annabelle Rodriguez, an associate professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the lead author. "Right now, the benefit of this research is in knowing that there might be a genetic reason for why some women have difficulty getting pregnant. In the future, we hope this knowledge can be translated into a cure for this type of infertility."

CAPE TOWN, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Economic Forum on Africa, scheduled on May 2-4 in Cape Town, South Africa, will see participants exchange views on how the continent can turn to the next chapter of development.The meeting, expected to gather a record 900 participants from over 60 countries, will be held under the theme "From Vision to Action, Africa's Next Chapter," organizers said."We chose this theme because we feel it is very relevant for the events that are taking place on this continent, and the opportunity for growth and investment that the international and African communities are seeing," said Katherine Tweedie, head of Africa for the World Economic Forum.Seven of the fastest growing economies in the world in the next five years will be in sub-Saharan Africa, Tweedie noted, saying that a lot of discussion will be devoted to explore drivers behind this growth.Africa's economic growth in recent years have impressed the world. Though being the most underdeveloped continent, Africa have been more resilient than expected during the global economic crisis.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) have predicted that the continent's growth in 2011 will reach 5.3 percent.Under one of the three thematic pillars, "Shaping Africa's Role in the New Reality," the meeting will explore how Africa can take on a leadership role in the new reality and guard against newly emerging global and regional risks. Participants will look at how Africa can strengthen its representation and negotiation capacity on global platforms such as COP 17 and the G20.Meanwhile, the meeting will look into Africa's industrial diversification, which is widely considered as an effective way to increase competitiveness. Discussions under the thematic pillar of "Fostering Africa's News Champions of Growth" will focus on what innovative and entrepreneurial lessons drive Africa's fastest- growing companies, and how can Africa's emerging economies build capacity in science, technology and innovation to move up the value chain.Another topic expected to attract much attention is Africa's inclusive development. In recent years, African decision makers have been looking for ways to attain inclusive development by translating economic growth into better lives for the people.Marcus Courage, managing director of consulting group Africapractice, said ahead of the meeting that Africa must start measuring its economic growth in terms of job creation and progress of value addition of what it produces, rather than the gross domestic product (GDP), if it has to move from vision to action."One of the challenges is that we measure economic success in therms of GDP. That is not fair reflection of action," he told Xinhua.Under the thematic pillar of "Building Partnership for Inclusive Development," participants will debate on how can inclusive growth be put at the heart of a sustainable development agenda for Africa, and how can government of African countries work together with the business sector to distribute more equitably the benefits from the wealth in natural resources, among others.Regarding the highlight of this year's meeting, Tweedie said there will be a strong focus on green growth and the environment agenda, working closely with the South African government, given that South Africa will be hosting the COP 17 meetings in December.The meeting will also have very strong representation from Francophone west Africa for the first time. It is also the only country from Africa in G20. SAN FRANCISCO, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Micro-blogging service Twitter on Wednesday confirmed that it has bought TweetDeck, a London-based startup that develops application to help people organize information posted on Twitter."Today, we're pleased to announce that the TweetDeck team has joined Twitter," Dick Costolo, Twitter's chief executive officer (CEO), said in a blog post."This acquisition is an important step forward for us. TweetDeck provides brands, publishers, marketers and others with a powerful platform to track all the real-time conversations they care about," he added.Founded in 2008, TweetDeck now has a team of 15 and offers a real-time application that allows users to monitor abundance of information from social media services including Twitter in a single concise view."Change may well be inevitable, but we remain the same team, staying in London, with the same focus and products, and now with the support and resources to allow us to grow and take on even bigger challenges," Iain Dodsworth, founder and CEO of TweetDeck, noted in a separate blog post.The deal is a defensive move for Twitter aimed at preventing TweetDeck from being purchased by rivals, some analysts said.Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but technology blog site TechCrunch and other U.S. media reported that Twitter paid 40 million to 50 million U.S. dollars.
