SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This holiday season, shopping local is what will keep San Diego small businesses alive.The US Census conducted a small business survey showing a third of San Diego businesses were negatively impacted by the pandemic. The effect is visible downtown."The pandemic has definitely taken a toll on the neighborhood, I mean we've had some closures," Gaslamp Quarter Executive Director Association Michael Trimble said.Trimble said four to eight restaurants closed since March in the Gaslamp Quarter alone."Not a large percentage but still any business lost is unfortunately a business that we mourn is not here," he said.While the holiday sale signs are out, the usual crowds brought in with conventions and tourism are nowhere to be seen.Trimble said locals are vital to keeping retail and restaurants alive this holiday season."Watching all these small businesses shut down or close forever during the pandemic, it's just been really sad. So, I don't have a ton of money but Amazon doesn't need my money. You know what I mean? Like, if I can help these little shops with my or my that's just a much better use of my time," Pacific Beach Resident Bree Steffen said.When the pandemic started Steffen pledged to only shop small. She deleted her Amazon app and started exploring her neighborhood, "I feel like this whole underworld of San Diego opened up for me once I started looking at the smaller shops."She said it was a more personal experience, where she found unique gifts that had more emotional value from being hand-crafted.She launched her own small photography business in October.Now she relies on people like her to change their habits and think small."I feel like each time I at least give them a little business it just gives them a little more hope to keep going on and it's like if 100 people give them then that's enough for them to try to weather this storm," she said hopeful it will end soon.Trimble said on November 28th, also known as Small Business Saturday, if you take a picture while shopping or in the area and tag @GaslampQuarter on Instagram you will be entered to win a gift card from local establishments.Trimble said there has been one silver lining of the pandemic and that was testing the outdoor dining concept on Fifth Avenue out of necessity.That paved the way for a long coveted project to turn Fifth Avenue into a promenade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of people spent their final day of the holiday weekend at San Diego beaches, just as the Beach Hazards Warning expired. Mother of two, Shannon Crais spent the day at Ocean Beach Sunday. "We live a couple of blocks away, so we come down here a couple of times a week."Her daughter Sam likes to play tag with the waves, as they ripple towards her older brother Alex. The Ocean Beach residents say they know the potential dangers of their favorite play area. "I talk to my son about it because he is a little bit bigger," Craig said. "But my daughter, she stays close. We talk about the ocean being dangerous."Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service dropped the Beach Hazards Warning for all of San Diego County. But all weekend, beachgoers faced strong rip currents and high breaking waves. This was a point of concern for some, but great news for surfers like Jesus Rodriguez. "I think the hurricane is bringing the swell from down south and it has been awesome!" Rodriguez said. Rodriguez says the waves were much better this long holiday weekend thanks to the high surf advisory. They were so good that he had to share the waves with a lot more people than usual. That is why he was doing two-a-day sessions over the last few days. "You get a lot better waves and a lot better form on the wave, so you can start ripping them up," Rodriguez said. Craig also appreciates the beautiful, ridable waves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The place where an 87-year-old woman was hit and killed by a FedEx truck, is now covered with candles, flowers, and messages from loved ones.Mary Francel was a mother to eight and grandmother to dozens more.She was walking back from church and crossing a driveway on Balboa Avenue near Mount Albertine Avenue when the FedEx truck hit her. The driver immediately stopped after the crash."She was very much well-loved and she put all of us first at all times, it was never about her," said Joey Villegas, one of Francel's grandchildren. "I wrote her and told her thank you, for how much she taught us. Me and my brother, she basically helped raise us when we were young."Villegas says his grandma loved bingo, drove a big truck and was incredibly devoted to her family and friends.At this time the driver has not been arrested or cited for the accident.   890

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Tierrasanta woman whose toddler died after being discovered in a car was arrested Thursday, San Diego Police said. Police said they waited this long to make the arrest to build evidence for a trial.Twenty-month-old Scarlett was found unresponsive outside the home at 10304 Leary St. on Aug. 5. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the child but were unsuccessful. Police said the girl’s mother, Pricilla Marquez Harris, called them at 12:45 p.m. that day to say she could not find her daughter. Harris later called back to say the girl was in her Nissan Altima and not breathing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department is investigating a stabbing in Encanto after a victim was found with stab wounds.Witnesses tell 10News a fight broke out between two males near the intersection of 65th Street and Wunderlin Avenue, across the street from Encanto Elementary School. Their ages are unknown. One male was stabbed at the scene, he was found near the park and recreation center where children were playing, according to witnesses. The second male fled before police arrived, police caught up to him and arrested him on Massachusetts Avenue.   615
