SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday. One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time. While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a graphic display, a former charter boat captain demonstrated Wednesday how to make the knots found on Rebecca Zahau’s body, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.Zahau was discovered bound and hanging from a balcony of the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011.While the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office determined the death was a suicide, Zahau’s family believes she was murdered. The Zahau family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend and the only other person in the home at the time of her death.Lindsey Philpott used a lifelike mannequin covered with a white sheet to show the overhand and clove hitch knots, which, according to the U-T report, Philpott said were common for nautical uses.Shacknai works as a tugboat captain.Philpott said under cross-examination that both knots are simple and widely used, the Union-Tribune reported. The Zahau wrongful death trial, which was in its fifth day Wednesday, is expected to last four weeks. 1034

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In-person voting kicked off in San Diego County on Saturday, welcoming voters to the polls early through Election Day.The polling locations will be open through Monday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and reopen on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are 235 super poll locations in San Diego County for in-person voting.Margie Singley is one resident who chose to vote in person on the first day. She said it was fast and easy.“I thought maybe it might be crowded so if it was busy today I might come tomorrow or Monday to avoid the crowds,” said Singley. She said that she felt an added level of security by voting in person and did not have any concerns about coronavirus because necessary steps were taken inside the polling place. “Not at all, so no fear. Come on in!” she said.Liza and Joe Kennedy turned in their filled-out ballots to a drop off location on the same day. They said it was their first time filling out their ballots from home, and they appreciated being able to take their time in the comfort of their own home.“It’s a safety reason too, you’re not sharing pens, you’re not in the same little fold up booth. You can do it in the security of your own home,” the couple said.Mary Criscenti and Allyson Brenner are the poll workers who collected the Kennedy’s ballots. The duo cheered on voters as they dropped off their ballots, saying everyone who stopped by had high energy all morning.“Everyone is happy. Everyone is filled with hope,” they said. All mailed ballots have to be postmarked by Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls close for in-person voting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.As of Sunday, more than 28,100 voters had already cast their votes in early voting at polling locations. Another 10,091 voters had already voted at the Registrar of Voters since Oct. 5.As of Friday evening, more than one million of the registered 1.9 million San Diego County voters had already cast their ballots. At the same time in the 2016 election, around 442,000 early votes were received. 2011

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the last week, San Diego Zoo Global has raised more than half-million dollars for Australian wildlife relief.More than 0,000 has been raised through admission sales on Sunday at San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, on-site donations, and online donations, the organization said. That money will go toward wildlife relief in Australia, as its devastating wildfire season scorches millions of acres."We are overwhelmed by the support that this initiative has received from our audiences, and inspired that so many people want to join us in saving Australian wildlife," said Paul Baribault, CEO of San Diego Zoo Global. "We know that there will be years of work to help ensure that species like koalas and platypuses can recover from the wildfires that have swept that country—and we are extremely grateful to all of the people who have joined us in our effort to help."RELATED:Here's how you can help the victims of the Australian wildfiresSan Diego Zoo Global supports koala recovery amid devastating Australia wildfiresNorth County woman crochets pouches for injured Australian animalsHigh heat and severe drought have fueled the wildfires in Australia, which are believed to have killed at least one billion animals. More than 15 million acres have been burned around the country.Researchers backed by the nonprofit organization are preparing to head to the country's Blue Mountains region to look for koala and provide any recovery. The region is home to the world's most genetically diverse koala population."The population of koalas in the Blue Mountains have high levels of genetic diversity.
