SANDUSKY, Ohio — Just as summer began, so did the immigration raids in northeast Ohio.The first one happened on June 5 at Corsos, a garden and flower center in Sandusky, Ohio where 114 people were arrested as their workday started.Two weeks later, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided another company called Fresh Mark. ICE raided all three of the company's locations, including the one in Canton, Ohio. More than 140 workers were arrested there, many of them accused of using false identification to get their jobs."We want to support our families and we want to protect and defend them so that they don't get split apart which you see is happening all over the place," said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in northeast Ohio.Dahlberg and the folks at HOLA Ohio stepped in to pay some of the bonds for those arrested in Sandusky."So far we've helped 21 of the farm workers, so we post the bonds for them at the Cleveland Heights deportation office," Dahlberg said.HOLA Ohio has raised ,000 to put towards bonding out the workers, and so far they used over ,000.Dahlberg said the family reunions have been bittersweet."When you see those reunions and you can deliver mom to the children or dad back to the household and the people are just so happy," she said. "There's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of sadness. Even though mom or dad is home, it's just a long process to try to stay here with their families."Dahlberg said although controversial, she is proud of the work she's doing."People will say 'oh you're helping illegals, you are helping people who are breaking the law,'" Dahlberg said. (KGTV) - A group of families in San Marcos is creating some outdoor learning pods when schools open with distance learning this fall.Like for so many others, distance learning in the spring was an exercise in distraction for the Holman family: Lauren and her husband, both working from home, along with 5-year-old Isabella, and 7-year-old Bradley, who tried to focus during class."Any time the live meetings with his teachers would go more than 20 or 30 minutes, he would start to get distracted," said Lauren Holman.Meanwhile, Lauren was trying to juggle her kids' needs with her job as a full-time online teacher."It was overwhelming and hectic, definitely a lot of stress," said Holman.That stress was revisited when she heard about schools opening with only distance learning."Internally I freaked out a bit, saying this is impossible," said Holman.So, she looked into what was possible. She and eight other families are creating two different learning pods."We have a small group of trusted families," said Holman.In one pod were Isbaella and three other kindergartners. In another, Bradley and five other 2nd graders. All are classmates at Twin Oaks Elementary."The parents will act as facilitators. I equate them with a substitute teacher who helps execute the lesson plan," said Holman.Parents will take turns, each taking a day with one group of kids to make sure they stay on track, offering one-on-one help. The micro-schools will be held outside, in back yards and parks. Canopies owned by the families will help with the sun."Trying to keep it safe. Promote social distancing," said Holman.Each student will be given their own box of supplies. Handwashing and hand sanitizing will be emphasized. The outdoor setting will offer options for socializing. Holman hopes her pods will give her and the other parents a break while giving her kids a little normalcy."I hope they are able to get the same experience in the classroom, as far as their academics. SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A man who reported his car stolen in San Marcos earlier this week caught a lucky break when he spotted his car in the same area today with the suspected thief inside -- but the suspect left before police were able to apprehend him.The man called law enforcement Wednesday morning to report his car had been taken from his apartment complex on Smilax Road near state Route 78, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins.Around 9 a.m. Sunday, the man called the Sheriff's Department and told deputies he had seen his car parked nearby with an unknown man inside it, Perkins said.The man reported seeing the suspect get out of his car and walk away. Deputies searched the area and detained a possible suspect, but it was determined he hadn't been involved in the crime, Perkins said.The suspected car thief remained at large. 863

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo. -- A husband and wife from Florida were killed in a small plane crash Monday in Colorado, just days after their wedding.According to the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office in Colorado, the victims in the crash were identified as Costas John Sivyllis, 30, and his wife of four days, Lindsey Vogelaar, 33, both of Port Orange, Florida.Deputies said the couple was leaving Colorado to return to Florida in a privately owned Beechcraft Bonanza when it crashed in the Ingram Basin east of Telluride, where they were married Oct. 1.Sivyllis, a United Airlines pilot and flight instructor, and Vogelaar, who also worked in the airline industry, were the only people on board. 701

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Two girls who were lost in a dense Northern California forest for nearly two days say they survived frigid nights by huddling under a tree branch and a huckleberry bush and by thinking "happy thoughts."Leia Carrico, 8, and her 5-year-old sister Caroline, said in an interview Monday they went on a hike last Friday past a marker that their parents told them not to pass because they wanted an adventure but lost their way home."I just wanted a little more adventure, I said to go a little farther," Caroline said.Leia said her sister cried the entire first night and she told her to think happy thoughts as they huddled under a tree branch close to the ground."I thought of going to the park with mommy and daddy. I thought of going to the ocean. I thought of everything I remembered, but it didn't work," Caroline said.Leia kept watch both nights and thought about the good memories from a family vacation to Monterey, California, she said.She said she also remembered what she learned from watching movies of people surviving in the wilderness, going camping every summer and the training with their local 4-H club.
