SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Law enforcement agencies in San Diego County have a new tool in the fight against child predators: Southern California’s first electronics-sniffing dog. Willow, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador, is trained to sniff out the chemical used to coat all kinds of electronic storage media, including microSD cards, thumb drives, hard drives, cell phones and tablets.She works in partnership with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.“Our whole goal with ICAC is to save kids,” said Willow’s handler Ron Burleson. “If they’ve got any homemade images, there’s a kid out there that needs to be rescued, needs to be found. So that can make all the difference in the world when we can find that hidden media.”RELATED: Dog eats marijuana, develops 'scary' symptomsK9s have a long history in law enforcement as drug, arson and bomb-sniffing dogs, but this sniffing specialty has only been around since 2012, when Connecticut State Police trained the world’s first electronic storage detection K9. The breakthrough came after Connecticut State Police chemist Dr. Jack Hubball discovered that all media with a circuit board -- like hard drives, thumb drives and SD cards -- is covered with a chemical to prevent overheating called triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO). Once trained, dogs will sniff out the chemical for a reward. San Diego ICAC will have about 2,000 cases this year, he said.When she’s not working, Willow lives with Burleson. “I’ve had many requests that the next time any friends or family lose their cell phone, they want me to bring Willow over,” he said.The funding to buy Willow, who cost about ,000, came from the San Diego Police Foundation through an anonymous donor, Burleson said. 2667

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - If violence is a learned behavior, so too then is non-violence. That’s the philosophy of two San Diego men who have worked together for 24 years to stop violence and save the lives of children. Azim Khamisa and Ples Felix have a message of peace-making to save the lives of children. The pair teach students in 5th through 9th grades the principles of accountability, empathy, peace building, and, above all, forgiveness. “We're not going to wake up and be in peace, We must teach restorative practices and create healthy kids, and healthy minds. Children who practice the principles of non-violence and actively commit themselves to becoming peace makers,” said Azim Khamisa. Khamisa started his journey after tragically losing his only son, Tariq Khamisa, when Tariq was 20 years old. As a college student working part-time, Tariq was lured to a gang house to deliver a pizza and fatally shot by then 14-year-old Tony Hicks. “It was like a nuclear bomb went off in my heart and I was broken into millions of small pieces. Violence is very real. It cuts deep and scars the soul,” Khamisa said. Khamisa founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to teach non-violence and took the extraordinary step of reaching out to Tony Hicks’ grandfather, Ples Felix. “I’m not here in a spirit of revenge...I'm here in the spirit of forgiveness because we both lost a son,” said Khamisa. Felix said he was praying for a way to reach out to the Khamisa family and provide support. He saw this as an answered prayer and accepted Khamisa’s hand of forgiveness. “To go forward in a way that in my life is totally unassociated with respect to that kind of trauma. I wanted to be with Azim's family...and commit to be of service any way I could,” said Felix. That was 24 years ago. The two men say they are now closer than brothers. Their safe school model is a 10-week curriculum, teaching lessons on empathy and compassion along with conflict resolution. The program also brings a peace club and leadership program to the schools. The results are staggering. The program has been shown to cut truancy and expulsion rates by 68 percent and increase conflict resolution peacefully by more than 90 percent. Khamisa and Felix have reached almost 600,000 students and, through digital and television coverage, the figure is easily into the millions. Former students such as Rocio Hernandez credit the program with saving her from despair, violent revenge, and thoughts that life isn’t precious. “On the way home from school I was attacked by gang members...I was only in the 7th grade. That could have been a turning point in my life. I could have turned violent myself. It’s crazy how the Tariq Khamisa Foundation came into my life at the right time. I remember coming out of that assembly empowered like I could take on the world,” said Hernandez. Hernandez now lives a positive, productive life and speaks to young people about her journey to happiness. It’s a journey that started with forgiveness, which Khamisa calls a gift you give yourself. “Mandela has a great quote: Resentment is like taking poison, and waiting for your enemy to die.” 3146

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Locals and visitors in San Diego's mountains Friday awoke to a winter wonderland of snowfall.A Thanksgiving storm brought a fresh coating of snowfall to the county's higher elevations, including areas of Julian, Descanso, Palomar Mountain, Pine Valley, and Mt. Laguna. A winter storm warning will continue through 10 p.m. Friday.San Diego mountains can expect to see about 10 to 18 inches of snow above 5,500', 10News meteorologist Megan Parry reports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside a mobile machinist shop, the Marine Corps can now print polymer and metal parts on the go.Operated by the 1st Marine Logistics Group, the Expeditionary Manufacturing Shelter is currently at Camp Pendleton. It houses several 3D printers which each serve a specific purpose."Digital manufacturing can be extremely useful in a combat situation or a disaster zone because we can take this shelter and deploy it to anywhere it's needed. We're able to provide parts that are not readily available, and we're able to get our equipment operational faster," said Staff Sgt. Samuel Margarini.Rather than ordering a part and waiting up to a week, the Marines can re-create a part within 24 hours, improving readiness and operational momentum.3D printing new parts is also cheaper and saves resources. "Since implementation we've had a huge impact on different platforms, we've made parts for trucks, humvees, tanks, and some drones," said Margarini.While only being used in training, for now, shelters like this will eventually be deployed where needed by the Marine Corps. 1098
