Gomez says nothing will help the situation as much as another stimulus package, which Congress has recently said would be its top priority this month.“The protections that are in place now for renters are really important but ultimately an infusion of cash from the federal government to allow other states and local assistance programs to meet the level of need,” said Gomez.In September, the CDC enacted an eviction moratorium that gave renters struggling to pay their monthly due some breathing room. The moratorium allowed landlords to file eviction cases in courts, but prevented law enforcement from carrying out eviction orders. When the moratorium ends on December 31, some activists worry there will be a large number of eviction orders carried out at once.“We may end up on January 1, 2021 with thousands of potential eviction orders,” said Carey DeGenaro, a lawyer with the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project.She says the CDC’s eviction moratorium is a bandage, as it delays the negative outcome, but is not a solution, as it does not address the problem of lost income. She says using the time you have in your place before the moratorium ends could offer more negotiating opportunities with landlords. DENVER – Coloradans who don’t identify as simply male or female will soon be able to choose a third sex option on their driver’s license or identification card.The Colorado Department of Revenue announced that residents will have three options – M (male), F (female) and X – starting this month.The change in policy is to bring the state into better compliance following two court rulings at the state and federal level, the Division of Motor Vehicles’ Executive Director Michael Hartman told the Denver Post.“This is an important step for the state of Colorado that the state documents reflect our values,” Hartman told the Post. “People are people no matter their sex identification.”Hartman said the change will be a simple one and won’t cost taxpayers any money.In order to choose “X” for their sex on a driver’s license, a person will need to provide either a change of sex designation form signed by a licensed medical or behavioral health care provider or a birth certificate with an “X” sex designation. The change cannot be made online.California, Oregon, Minnesota, Maine and Washington, DC already offer a non-binary sex designation on driver’s licenses and ID cards. Licenses from those states with an “X” designation can be converted directly to a Colorado license with the “X” sex marker.The state said a license or ID card with the "X" designation will be compliant with the federal REAL ID standards.The state also is proposing allowing a third sex option on birth certificates following the settlement of a lawsuit that aimed to declare the state’s birth certificate policy unconstitutional because of its requirement that a person’s sex be surgically changed in order to alter the sex designation on a certificate.The new driver’s license and ID card policy goes into effect under an emergency rule on Nov. 30. DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. is making General Motors recall and repair nearly 6 million big pickup trucks and SUVs equipped with potentially dangerous Takata air bag inflators.The move announced Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will cost the automaker an estimated .2 billion.GM had petitioned the agency four times starting in 2016 to avoid a recall, contending the inflators are safe.Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to fill air bags in a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate and explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel.At least 27 people have been killed worldwide by the exploding inflators.GM released a statement in response to the NHTSA, saying it would abide by the agency’s decision. 794

DETROIT — Two conservative activists accused of voter intimidation turned themselves into law enforcement at the Detroit Detention Center early Thursday morning.Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl have been charged with multiple felonies in Michigan for a series of false robocalls that aimed to dissuade urban residents in Detroit and other cities from voting by mail.They will be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. in 36th District Court.Burkman, a 54-year-old Arlington, Virginia resident, and Wohl, a 22-year-old Los Angeles resident, are each charged with:One count of election law — intimidating voters, a five-year felonyOne count of conspiracy to commit an election law violation, a five-year felonyOne count of using a computer to commit the crime of election law — intimidating voters, a seven-year felonyUsing a computer to commit the crime of conspiracy, a seven-year felonyIf convicted of the charges, the maximum amount of prison time each defendant could receive under law is 12 years, due to Michigan’s concurrent sentencing statutes.
