A convent in Livonia, Michigan, is mourning the loss of 13 nuns to the coronavirus. The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Felix of Cantalice, or Felician Sisters, lost 12 nuns to the virus between April 10 (Good Friday) and May 12, according to the Global Sisters Report publication.A 13th nun succumbed to the illness in June. "We went through the motions of doing what we had to do, but that month was like a whole different way of life. That was our most tragic time. A Chandler mother is accused of punching and biting her preschool-aged daughter. Chandler police report that on July 31 they arrested 31-year-old Enricka Rena Johnson. Police say Johnson abused her 5-year-old daughter at their home near Arizona Avenue and Pecos Road. Investigators allege that Johnson became angry because the child would not brush her hair. She reportedly punched the girl in the eye and bit her on the arm. A medical exam noted several other injuries including a brain bleed and a broken lower leg with scarring. Johnson allegedly told police that she bit the child on the arm, hand, and shoulder. She also said, "I hit her hard, I hit her a lot."She reportedly told police that the girl broke her leg about two to four months ago, but instead of getting medical attention she taped the leg for support. The leg swelled causing the scarring. Police say they also found meth in Johnson's possession. She has been charged with child abuse.I 1005

A former Jupiter, Florida police sergeant was fired after an investigation found he performed sex acts while on duty, is now suing the town of Jupiter.Jason VanSteenburgh is suing the town for negligent supervision as well as retaliation and discrimination, after he says he was sexually harassed by then Major Amy Walling.Walling was fired at the same time as VanSteenburgh, for engaging in those sexual acts with the sergeant, while he was on duty.Investigators said videos taken during the acts were part of evidence. In his lawsuit, VanSteenburgh admits he engaged in a sexual relationship with his supervisor, Walling in 2013. But he says "she used her power as major to discipline him for personal matters/disputes and put his position on the SWAT team at issue."VanSteenburgh said he ended his relationship with Walling in 2016 when "she began to stalk him and sexually harass him in the workplace, despite his objections." VanSteenburgh says he was fearful of complaining about her."This fear was confirmed when Chief Kitzerow made a comment to VanSteenburgh that he would 'always back his command staff,'" the lawsuit claims.He says despite his objections, Walling then sent him a half-naked photo of herself in his shirt. She also allegedly "bought a home near his home and an identical vehicle to that of his fiancee."VanSteenburgh said he complained to the chief, deputy chief, human resources and other majors multiple times but was told not to worry. He claims "Walling was told to stay away by command staff," but she didn't.VanSteenburgh then says he was removed from the SWAT team and placed on administrative leave. A Georgia school decided on Thursday to reverse its decision it made earlier in the week to end the practice of students participating in the Pledge of Allegiance during all-school assemblies, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier in the week, Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School said that the pledge would no longer be recited in such assemblies after some parents and students expressed concerns. The school said that it wasn't outright banning the Pledge of Allegiance from being recited during school hours, but moving the pledge to the school's classrooms. “Over the past couple of years it has become increasingly obvious that more and more of our community were choosing to not stand and/or recite the pledge," principal Lara Zelski said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "There are many emotions around this and we want everyone in our school family to start their day in a positive manner. After all, that is the whole purpose of our morning meeting.” By late Thursday, backlash from the public and public officials forced the school to reverse its decision. Georgia' Department of Education requires schools to make time for the Pledge of Allegiance, but students are not required to stand or recite it. “Students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance," county superintendent Morcease J. Beasley told the Constitution-Journal. "If they choose to participate or not is their individual and constitutional right and the reason the flag of the United States of America exists.
