(KGTV) -- A smartphone tool aimed at alerting Californians on potential exposure to the coronavirus was launched on Thursday.According to Gov. Newsom¡¯s office, the free CA Notify system ¡°will help reduce the transmission of COVID-19.¡± Californians can opt into the digital tool ¡°to receive COVID-19 notifications informing them if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for the virus,¡± Newsom¡¯s office said.Officials confirmed CA Notify is ¡°a completely private, anonymous and secure tool that does not collect location data from any device and never shares user identities.¡±iPhone users can enable CA Notify by going to Settings, and then to Exposure Notifications. From there, users will have the option to Turn On Exposure Notifications. Users will then choose United States, followed by California.Android device users who want to be notified will have to download the CA Notify app from the Google Play store.How CA Notify functions, according to state officials:¡°When individuals voluntarily activate CA Notify, the tool uses Bluetooth technology to exchange random codes between phones without revealing the user¡¯s identity or location.If a CA Notify user tests positive for COVID-19, they will receive a verification code to plug into the app, if they choose. Any other CA Notify users who have been within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more of the COVID-19 positive individual will get an anonymous notification of possible exposure.CA Notify will accelerate how quickly people get notified of a possible COVID-19 exposure, giving people the information they need to make responsible decisions around quarantine and testing.Users who have tested positive for COVID-19 will get a text from the California Department of Public Health at 855-976-8462 with a code which they can enter into CA Notify triggering an alert to phones of people who may have been exposed in the previous 14 days.¡±The CA Notify system began this fall as a pilot program at UC San Diego and UC San Francisco. 2011

(CNN) -- Sugar might be falling out of favor, but it's the centerpiece of a makeover of Krispy Kreme that includes a new menu and its first store redesign in a decade.The doughnut company, founded 82 years ago, debuted a new location Tuesday in North Carolina that showcases Krispy Kreme's new, extra-sweet menu. It features concoctions like doughnut-infused ice cream, milkshakes and a customizable toppings bar for the glazed doughnuts.The makeover follows rival Dunkin's debut of a modernized store and new menu items, like breakfast bowls, in a bid to attract more people. The expansion has worked and sales jumped 2.4% for the first quarter of this year.The new Krispy Kreme store, which is a half hour east of Charlotte, is framed with a "stylistic wink" to its logo on the exterior. The interior has digital menu boards and an "enhanced doughnut theater experience" that shows how the doughnuts are made and glazed on a conveyer belt.The menu is revamped. One of the new items is "scoop sandwiches," a layer of ice cream with doughnuts in it, served between a sliced doughnut that can be topped with a variety of items, like vanilla, or chocolate. New milkshakes made from the doughnut ice cream can be topped, of course, with doughnuts, as well as toppings like Oreo bits.The doughnuts themselves are getting an upgrade; customers will have the option to add five different glazes and ten toppings.The company said the design is coming at a time of growth for the once-struggling chain. It plans to open 450 shops globally by the end of 2022. Of those, 45 new shops will be in the United States within the next year.Krispy Kreme will also remodel its 350 stores in the United States. But each store might not be as elaborate as its North Carolina store because menu items and store features will vary depending on location and store size.Krispy Kreme is building a new location in New York's Times Square. It will be open 24 hours a day and include a glaze waterfall. It's scheduled to open early next year.The doughnut chain went private in 2016 when JAB Holdings bought it for .35 billion. (KGTV) ¡ª California Highway Patrol is advising motorists to be prepared for a possible shut down of the Grapevine stretch of Interstate 5 this week.With a major winter storm expected to sweep through Southern California over the Thanksgiving holiday, CHP sent out a warning Tuesday for motorists to stay alert if using I-5 between Santa Clarita and Mettler, Calif."We are expecting snow on the Grapevine starting this Wednesday," CHP wrote. "We always hope to keep it open, however safety is our top priority. If the conditions become unsafe, we will hold traffic until Caltrans HQ makes the roadway safe. Expect a high volume of traffic this holiday week.
